Our evening started out bad when we were sat in the corner by the windows which were leaking cold air all night. I had to ask twice before anyone did anything to raise the heat a...

The One Restaurant 5/3/2003

This is one of the great restaurants not just of Chicago, but of the world. People who complain that the servings are small are people who don't get that a small, perfect diamond is better than a great big ol' cubic zirconium. I've eaten my way through a lot of the great restaurants of Chicago and Paris and of all these restaurants if I had to transport just one to a desert island with me, it would be Tru. If you don't get what a great restaurant this is, stick with the Cheesecake Factory and by all means, open up more tables for those of us who know what we're eating. Pros: everything Cons: too few open tables more

Very disappointed 4/27/2003

My girlfriend and I were expecting a lot after reading some of the reviews. We understood that Tru was extremely expensive, but with expensive restaurants, we expect the service to be equally good. It was very subpar. Our server couldn't match wines to foods appropriately and the food was Pros: Ambiance is alright Cons: Service, Cuisine more

i like my money in my wallet 4/13/2003

i feel like i was mugged coming here...spent $400 for two people and food plates were the size of a penny....definitely not worth the cash. more

Didn't know what to expect.... 2/19/2003

I didn't know what to expect after reading these mostly great, sometimes scathing reviews. Now I know. The scathing ones were crazy. Loony. Cuckoo. Yes, our experience was three hours long. Barely noticed. Yes, one glass of chardonnay costs $20 (but another glass costs $9--not that unusual). Yes, the most expensive prix fixe selection is $135--and it comes with four ounces of caviar--so what did you expect? The food is creative and ultra-fine, presentation for each dish is delightful, and the service is the best I've experienced anywhere, ever, period. At the end of our meal, we got a little box of petit fours--I think it was because we were so obviously enjoying ourselves (and because I couldn't finish my dessert), but they are probably that nice to everyone. If you're concerned about price, start eating mac'n'cheese every night and save up. Then go to Tru. Pros: Service, Holistic experience, Quality/pres. of food Cons: Price more

Great experience 2/13/2003

My experience at Tru was nothing short of perfection. Price is only a ""Con"" if you are looking for a cheap night out. My fiancee and I each had the chef's menu (8 spontaneous courses...hers was all seafood) and several glasses of wine/champagne each, all for $315, plus tip. The portions were small, but after 8 of them we were both very full. Highly recommended, especially for a special occaision. Pros: Incredible service, Friendly staff, Good food Cons: Pricey more

Interesting Dining Experience 12/31/2002

Reservations are a must. If you like to be impressed and money is no object, then this is the place for you. Service is well worth it and so are the desserts. Food had an excellent presenation but lacked bold flavor. I had the Chef course which was 8 courses of surprises. Good experience, would go back again, but after I payed the bill for this trip. Pros: Flawless Service, Great Presentation, Awesome Desserts Cons: Pricey, Very Formal more

You Get What You Pay For 12/30/2002

And at Tru you are paying for the service. Me and my significant other celebrated pre Christmas weekend by having dinner at Tru. We had the Chef's Special 9 course seafood only selection. Although the meal was a bit pricey, the service was world class, she has not stopped talking about the experience yet. Her smile was priceless. Oh, the food was pretty good too, I don't give the food a perfect score; the 9 course selection only allowed for small portions which although delightful doesn't allow one to really savor any one thing. Pros: Service, Elegant Cons: Pricey, It was Cold!!! more

fly to new orleans eat and save money 12/12/2002

The most memorable item of the evening was the tab....$500 for two (just a half bottle of wine). The food is excellent and much goes into the presentation as most of it comes in teeny tiny well crafted morsels. The soup literally comes in a spoon! hahahaha! This is not the spot for veteran foodies as most will find that the balance of price and value can be met for less at a very long list of restaurants around the world. Tip: fly to new orleans on a last minute fare, grab a bite at Commander's Palace, see a band and return on the red eye. You might have some money left over.... Pros: service, presentation, desserts Cons: $250/person no wine, think about it?, soop in a spoon more

Romantic Nights 10/14/2002

I took my fiancee to TRU. We have been to many upscale resturants and found this place to be outstanding. A clas all its own. It is definately worth a second trip. Pros: honest, serene, tranquil more

WOW 10/3/2002

The most amazing dining experience that I have ever had and it was just that--an experience. I was talking about it for days after I went. I don't think my tounge has ever tasted such a wide variety of complimentary flavors. simply amazing. Pros: everything else Cons: price more

Very Disappointed! 9/23/2002

With over 1,000 wines on the wine list, only one Chardonnay was offerred by the glass at $18 a glass. Give me a break. The portion sizes were horribly small, and nothing ""tasty"" worthy of note. The maine lobster portion size was a joke for the price fixe price, and you couldn't even taste the coconut emulsion. The shrimp appetizer was common and bland. I enjoy fine dining, and will gladly pay $100 for an entree only if it is worth it. I will not be returning nor recommending Tru. They have no right to charge what they do for what they serve. Pros: service, decor Cons: value, wine by glass, taste of food more

AN ARM AND TWO LEGS 9/18/2002

Feel like a prince or princess for a day, but sell the family jewels. FOUR HOURS for dinner! They even printed our names on the menu when we told them it was our anniversary. Very cool. You know when comedians spoof ""fancy, expensive restaurants"" with pea-sized portions? Well, this is that restaurant. Pros: SERVICE, atmosphere, creative food Cons: PRICE more

Perfect Service 9/8/2002

I love beer and expressed disappointment with their offerings which were limited to 2. The staff went out the back door and down the street to the deli to fetch me a Heineken! Pros: great service, delicious food Cons: expensive more

The best in every way! 8/7/2002

Tru is the definition of a special occasion restaurant. The food is amazing but their service is the most perfectly orchestrated and customer focused balet of movement I have ever experienced. They always anticipated every possible need without ever being intrusive. They accomodated every minor or unusual request with pleasure. The tasting menu was a wonderful collection of perfect flavors from the four piece amuse bouche and caviar staircase at the beginning to the incredibly playful desert cart that finished the meal. The decor was simple with beautiful artwork that complimented the food and service. The price tag was significant but I was so thrilled at how the entire experience had surpassed my expectations that I happily signed the check. Pros: Perfect service, Wonderful food, Beautiful decor Cons: Expensive more

Tru made our anniversary perfect 8/7/2002

My husband and I went to Tru for our anniversary and experienced the highest level of bliss that food could ever possibly bring. We each had the 10-course chef's selection, which means there were 20 flawless dishes between us (and multitudes of desserts)! Every single detail was executed perfectly, from our service team's careful timing, unintrusive nature and explanations to the beautifully prepared food that is indescribable... every single course had its perfect place and was thought out, ordered carefully, and balanced. At least 5 other couples were there for anniversaries, and we were all glowing with enthusiasm and felt like kings and queens. There is no comparison to this restaurant except perhaps heaven. Pros: intense gorgeous food, amazing service, perfection achieved Cons: none whatsoever! more

Good food at bad prices 8/1/2002

Ate at Tru in the last week of June this year while on vacation in Chicago. While the food was good it was not great. Had the lamb as a main and enjoyed it. The quality of the meat was exceptional but the portion small by about 30%. Wine list was impressive but again far too over priced and lacking in Australian selections. Wait staff was efficient but mechanical and entirely aloof. My advice is to stay away from the sushi. It's mediocre at best and you should never expect to be served ""real"" sushi unless it is served at an exclusively Japanese restaurant prepared be a Japanese master. Too bad there seems to be little to none of these in Chicago. Pros: Elegant, Location Cons: Price, Stuffy more

That much!!!! For What?!? 7/29/2002

I have dined at some of the best restaraunts in Chicago and I have never felt more overcharged than I had at Tru. It is beautiful. The service is superb. However, it is still a restaraunt and food comes first. I don't doubt that there was an extrodinary amount of time spent on each dish. However, there was nothing that either my wife or I ate that was anything more than hype. Even though Les Frances is much less trendy, they deliver on the promise of fantastic food. My tab with tip (Chefs Table Menu) was $513.00. That is for two people. For that kind of money for Dinner, I should at least be able to rave about one of the 20 courses my wife and I had eaten combined. Beware, this is the Emporers new clothes of dining! Pros: Service, Wine, Service Cons: Price, Value, Food more

Forget the rest...Tru is BEST! 6/26/2002

Everything about Tru tells you that they are trying to do everything a little better than everyone else. For example, for the chef's tasting menu..each of us (3) got a different dish on EVERY course. That means that each of us tried 30 different (excellent) dishes. No other chef in the US has done that. Not in NY, San Fran, or, N.O. The staff was amazing, especially Seven (that's her name). Her team was awesome. We got a tour, and a menu with our picture on it! Nice little extra touch. Charlie Trotter should bring his whole staff here to see what great service is! Very expensive, worth every penny! Pros: service, diverse tastes more
