Our evening started out bad when we were sat in the corner by the windows which were leaking cold air all night. I had to ask twice before anyone did anything to raise the heat a...

Management isn't hungry any more. 2/20/2007

My husband always treats me to an extraordinary restaurant for our anniversary and my birthday. After experiencing Charlie Trotters, Everest, Trio, and Avenues, I looked forward to Tru. Pros: ambiance Cons: staff is overtrained in some areas and oblivious in others more

Art food with a sense of humor. 12/20/2006

In two words: Utterly delightful. more

A wonderfully memorable experience! 10/21/2006

Everything about this restaurant was fabulous! The food was so good, we didn't mind the price at all. It was worth it! We got the Chef's tasting-amazing! The service is amazing! This is a great place to go for a special occasion such as a wedding anniversary. Pros: FOOD, service, atmosphere Cons: absolutely none more

Excellent atmosphere and food 10/20/2006

Order the Black Truffle Lobster Risoto, order the Australian Lamb. This place has incredible service, definitely the best place in Chicago. more

Tru without the commitment 8/8/2006

A new 9-table Salon lets you sample the ambiance, coordinated service, and ingenious creations without dropping $110-$135 a person on three hours of degustation antics. Pros: Superlative service, ingredients, cooking techniques Cons: Not for those looking for a conventional "classy" dining experience more

That special evening 6/23/2006

This is a very special place. I have dined in MANY highly rated expensive places in Chicago and elsewhere--and this is really an event. The dining room is austere, but beautiful-the focus is clearly on the food, and the service--RIDICULOUS. more

Kitchen staff needs lots of training 6/8/2006

After my one and only dinner experience at Tru, I'm baffled how it managed to receive so many positive reviews. My wife and I both had the three course menu which offers about 8 choices per course. On paper, many dishes sounded tempting. Pros: Central location, nice bar Cons: food cooked by incompetent chefs more

The Best of Chicago 8/14/2005

This dining experience is absolutely outstanding. Chef Tramonto's Collection is definitely recommended. From the Crenshaw Melon-Basil juice to the Osetra Caviar staircase - this is just the beginning of an evening to remember. The Poached Maine Lobster Risotto is definitely a must have. The service is impectable - very attentive - present for every request before one even thinks to ask. Each course is perfectly orchestrated...every morsel a work of art. Excutive Pastry Chef Gale Gand's dessert The art collection brings even more to the atmosphere from Andy Warhol's Marilyn to Yves Klein's Venus Bleuse - Tru brings together an experience that is delectable , unique, and worth every penny. Pros: Excellent Service, Quiet, Romantic more

TRU- Truly remarkable! 7/5/2005

Perhaps the best overall restaurant experience I had ever imagined. Having been to the finest restaurants in 52 countries TRU is unequivocally the best! TRUS impeccable service, perfect presentation, extensive, well rounded wine list brought a tear to my eye. I could wax on about each delightful course, the staff etc. But alas, it is something that can only be fully appreciated if in fact it is experienced in totality. Please plan to arrive early and spend the entire evening. My 88 year old Grand mother quipped; This is better than the nice restaurant that you took me to in San Francisco, therefore Chicago is better than San Francisco My grandmother could find no fault. Neither could I. Our party of five left the restaurant with the feeling of amazement and wonder. We surrendered to the passion which is TRU. Thankful for the experience. Edward Skupien Frank Family Vineyards Pros: Service, Wine List, Food Cons: None, None, None more

decent, but inconsistent 5/20/2005

We went for my fiance's birthday. The service, while a bit stiff, was impeccable. The food however, was hit or miss. We went with the Chef's tasting. The soups were amazing, and creatively presented. The main course(s) of venison and steak were delicious. The fish courses were unremarkable, and a foie gras on french toast, competes as one of the worst things we've ever eaten - soggy, slimy and unbearably rich. Overall, the food was pretty good, but at the prices hardly inspiring. I can't imagine we'd go back. Pros: service Cons: expensive, uptight more

Too uptight 5/8/2005

Although the food was quite delightful. There was something very tense about this place. We were there until late, and at some point the mood relaxed, The waiter seemed human, I believe the chef had left for the evening. One of the most expensive meals I ever had, but doesn't rate in my top food list at all. Pros: Decor Cons: very expensive more

Overambitious 6/21/2004

Good concepts but faltering execution. Granted most dishes were very good, and the foie gras was the best I ever had, but others, like the raw tuna and chorizo, were inedible. The fighting fish in the bowl look tired of being caged next to other dead fish parts and the effect was lost. Caviar had been opened too long and was starting to taste rank. Made specific menu request, which were ignored until pointed out. It's nice that staff is instructed to call guests by their name, but if you can't pronounce my French surname, don't bother faking the French accent. Way too expensive to tolerate any mistakes and this place had quite a few. Pros: attentive service, lovely decor and art Cons: , uneven execution, did I mention price more

Embarrassment 6/7/2004

Chef Tremont and his crew must have a good time with their joke on the guests. Although the food is presented in an artistic way, almost playful, one does not come to a restaurant for taking pictures of food, but to eat. The Kitchen Table selections by the Chef, were skimpy, not very tasty, with only one Caviar Stair for 4 people and Ginger Ale Floats as a dessert. We informed them of our dislike for Ginger Ale, but still got it. Our guests from Switzerland were very disappointed. We will never go back there. This is a joke played out at the expense of the gullible and the kitchen staff must have a great time laughing at them. Roquefort as the ""King of Cheeses"", you got to be kidding! Pros: Presentation of Food, Service Cons: , Price, Desserts more

""Tru-ley"" Number One 5/17/2004

Ritz, schmitz.....there is only room on the top for one pastry chef and Gale Gand is it. Supreme service, great courses, and incredible desserts make this the Number on restaurant in Chicago.... Pros: Parking, Food, Service more

Dining at its best. 3/11/2004

The best dining experience that I have ever had. Food is outstanding, service is impeccable, wine list is extensive. Decor is contemporary and very well done. The signed menus are a nice touch at the end of the meal. Pros: Food, Service, Ambiance more

TRU Review 12/18/2003

Absolutely over-the-top fantastic! I treated my boyfriend as part of an ""evening of elegance"" (we attended the symphony after dinner), and we both agreed that the experience enabled us to step out of our ordinary, hum-drum lives and into one of wealth and privilege--at least for a few hours. Pros: conveniently located, phenomenal cuisine, very attentive staff Cons: extremely expensive, can be intimidating more

Not worth the price 11/24/2003

Tru is a good restaurant, don't get me wrong. However, it would be impossible for any restaurant to be worth $400+. It is a beautiful place with impeccable service. The flatware and tableware are exquisite. The food itself is visually stunning. The taste left something to be desired. If this meal had cost me $200 less than it did then I would have given Tru a perfect score on all accounts but sadly I just can not convince myself that it was worth the price. Pros: impeccable service, beautiful decor, stunning food present Cons: PRICE, PRICE, PRICE more

Week night vs. Sat. Night 10/13/2003

Last September, I went on a Monday night and had a wonderful time. So, I decided to come back this September with 5 of us. This time, it was a Saturday night and it was noisier and busier! We were greeted pleasantly and seated right away. But our head waiter was difficult to hear over all the noise. He was too soft spoken, although nice. All 5 of us ordered from the Collection side of the menu. The first course for all was the spectacular caviar staircase. This year, only 3 were brought out to be shared among the 5 of us. We were disappointed in this because for the price, we expected each one of us to receive his/her own. Aside from that, everything else was exceptional! I would highly reccomend this fabulous restaurant, but I would suggest going on a week night for less noise and better enjoyment. Pros: Excellent service, Outstanding food, Nice ambiance Cons: Noisey on weekends, Expensive more

Wonderful Gastronomic Experience 10/4/2003

It doesn't get much better than this in Chicago. The experience is amazing and even though the price is high the value is there if you appreciate fine dining. Pros: Experience, Taste, Quality Cons: Price more

Disappointed by the Dessert Tasting 5/21/2003

UNROMANTIC. That's what I have to say about Tru. I expected a lot from Tru's dessert tasting, especially when I requested a nice secluded table in advance. What I got was seated at a table for 4 in the middle of the room, with no privacy to be close to my girlfriend and let her know that I loved her. On top of that, the dessert tasting was simply terrible. Nothing was prepared well, and we were close to simply walking out. Elsewhere. Elsewhere. Thtat's what I'd recommend for anyone. Pros: Our server was nice Cons: Everything else. more
