twice is nice 8/21/2006

I , too, have been to Beacon Street on two occasions and couldn't have had a more different experience than ""the phantom"". Both of my visits have been on quieter evenings but I found the food and service excellent. Maybe the bartenders have difficulty when its busy, but our bartender was hilarious (she even ended up getting my friend a date!) and made us about a billion mohitos in a flash. We had a few appetizers, including a locally grown tomato salad, and they were presented beautifully and perfectly suited for a hot summer night. Pros: great music, friendly service, great food Cons: can't drink on the patio without ordering dinner more

Beware of the ""high table"" 8/15/2006

Went for dinner on a Wednesday night, and it was crowded (45 min. wait), but we were told that we could sit immediately at the ""high table"". Thinking it was simply a bar table, we agreed. However, it turns out that it is a community table circa Durgin Park!! We shared the table with two other parties - it was very uncomfortable and awkward.\r \r Food was good, but overpriced. Martini was good as well. Service was so-so - the waiter never asked us if we wanted more drinks, etc. Pros: Good food, drinks, nice location Cons: Overpriced, mediocre service more

Great barstaff, great atmosphere, excellent addition to Brookline dining 7/30/2006

My fiance and I had a great time Saturday at this new spot which is more fun than 95% of the places in Boston that we have been. The room is furnished beautifully and the lay-out is inviting- we were graciously welcomed at the door and immediately went to the bar where I found the bartender extremely friendly and helpful. She made us feel like were in New York City though the room was more spacious than most bars in New York. I chose the tuna tartar- which I thought was delicious and it's really not important to me what shapes the tuna is formed into. It was amazing and my fiance had lobster/avocado salad which was wonderful also. The bartender suggested a pomegranate martini and it was the perfect cocktail - not cloying like lots many sweet drinks like that can be - I will go back and will have a hard time ordering anything else. We had a great time- it wasn't very crowded while we were there but, the service and the atmosphere and our food were superb. We are thrilled that the place is in our neighborhood and hope it stays around for a long time and I see no need to change a thing. Pros: excellent staff and cocktails, beautiful room, hip not pretentious Cons: deck closes earlier, oftentimes crowded more

Beacon Street Tavern 7/28/2006

After reading the review posted by ""c town"" I felt compelled to set the record straight. I have owned a restaurant in Cambridge for over a decade and am left thinking that there must be a pressing personal matter between ""c town"" and an owner or staff member at the B.S.T. I say that only because I have long been a fan of their flagship store and have enjoyed 2 meals at the new location. Both of their establishments are thankfully lacking a pretentious atmosphere and over priced, egotistic cuisine. Their sucess stems from word-of-mouth advertising, not from publicist fueled false popularity. The aforementioned reviewer suggests that Brookline patrons and residents lack a downtown pallete which reveals the true arrogance and condesention in which the review was written. \r \r I highly recommend both restaurants, especially to my friends!!!!!! Pros: great food and wine by the bottle value Cons: busy and a little loud more

Great addition to the neighborhood 7/20/2006

Have long been a fan of washington sq dating back to the hathaway days. Although I must admit when the new chef took over a couple of years ago, the food was even better. I was excited to learn about the Beacon street tavern in jan from the owner gerry (who recomends reserve wine and works the floor nightly) and after a long wait, finally checked it out. We started with the best lobster chowder I have ever had and the arugula salad ( also very good) . Then the chicken and the seared tuna, both of which were better than wonderful. For desert we had 8 oysters (4 island creek and 4 steamboat ) over shaved ice with all the sauces and off we were. Without our bottle of wine we were out of there for about $70 which almost seemed to inexpensive for the meal we had just eaten. Overall I would give the Beacon Street Tavern a 9 1/2 out of 10. \r \r P.S I didn't notice the hamburger that the other reviews mentioned on the menu at all . I know that the washington sq tavern has a good one though! Who would really order a burger anyway with all the other great Items on the menu. Pros: great food at good value and on of the best wine lists in the city Cons: new place, needs a little fine tuning on service more

Awesome Halibut 7/15/2006

Having read a couple of reviews I was a little cautious about this new restaurant. First of all I couldn't make reservations so I was slightly put off. Arriving @ 7:00pm on Friday 14th It quickly became apparent why no reservations are taken, there was a long line of walk-ins ahead of me. The hostess was busy but efficient and asked about our party (2), she told us it would be a long wait for the patio but inside would be 35-40 mins. No problem! we were served quickly by a friendly and fast bartender. Drinks were great, it certainly didn't feel like it but 25mins later the hostess called our name and we were seated against the back wall of the restaurant. The place was a hive of activity but again water and bread were quickly dropped and the server took our order within 5mins. Starting out with the arugula salad which was crisp and fresh, and the beef carpacio, small but served on a chilled plate(nice touch) we were already quite pleasantly surprised. The entrees soon followed, Beef tenderloin tips that would melt in your mouth certainly did not need the steak knife that the were accompanied by. However it was the halibut that was the most valuable dish of the evening. Crispy on the exterior and yet perfectly cooked inside it was served over a bed of smoky black beans (watch out for the bacon!) and topped with a fruity salsa. WOW! \r There were no desserts available so we retired to the bar after our meal for a post meal drink, we were at the bar no longer then 3 mins and noticed our table had been resat. All in all it was a n excellent experience in a new place I think these guys are only open a few weeks. Pros: excellent food, ambience, quick efficent service Cons: busy, busy, no reservations more

Beware of Beacon St. Tavern, there are better places to go 7/13/2006

First things first. My girlfriend and I wanted to go to an outdor seating place around coolidge corner as there aren't many places like this to eat in the area. We saw the patio, it looked cool as did the inside, and we put our name on the list and were told 40 min. wait for outside seating. We went to the bar, had a drink which was reasonably priced and were seated in about and hour and 15 mins. -, Not happy but no problem. We ordered the lobster chowder for an appetizer and thought it was very good.\r -NOW IT ALL GOES DOWNHILL-\r In the middle of our appetizer, my girlfriend's main course salad came. It was quite sub-par, nothing a salad at this type of place should be. The $13 dollar burger I ordered was no where to be found. After the waitress came to check on the food she saw I had no entree and said she was going to check on it. 20 minutes later she came back and said that my burger had been sent to another table. NO problem accidents happen. When I finally did get my meal, another waitor came over and slapped it down on the table. They neglected to bring my side and there was no waitress to be found to see if I needed anything or to make sure everything was ok. Looking at the burger it resembled something coming off a McDonalds assembly line, let alone a place trying to make a name for itself in the trendy Boston market. The manager didn't even have the time to come and make amends for the awful meal.\r Overall it was a dissapointing experience. I really did want this nice and trendy of a place to work out but I wouldn't go back for another few months until they get all their stuff straightened out. Pros: Nice place, very trendy, out-door seating Cons: AWFUL food, waitstaff ok, manager needs to realize his resturant is in the SERVICE industry more

A Truly Awful Experience 7/9/2006

The service sucked; the food was average; the experience was unspeakable. Here are the details:\r \r 1) We gave our name and were told that the wait would be 30 minutes. When we waited 40 minutes, we checked with the host/hostess, who said there were 2 groups in front of us and that it'd be a few minutes more (understandable and not an issue). When we waited another 30 minutes, we checked with the host/hostess, who said Our Party was seated 30 minutes ago (they had even crossed off our name). They didn't bother to call our name; they merely gave our table away to another group--no explanation, no apology, nada. Throughout our wait, we heard other names being called for tables, yet silence for ours. Definitely not right. \r \r 2) During our unnecessary wait, we at least thought it would be easy enough to order drinks at the moderately-crowded bar--no such luck, as the bar staff spent more time chatting with others. \r \r 3) To make matters worse, they sat us at a communal table which they neglected to clean (it's a bad sign when your forearm sticks to a dirty table). Plus, they brought 2 menus and 2 napkins for our party of 4......maybe they expected us to share them? \r \r 4) Finally, when you order a burger with cheese on it, shouldn't the cheese be melted?\r \r \r Pros: There is nothing positive to write about this place Cons: There are too many to list more

Excellent Food at Reasonable Prices 7/9/2006

I went to the Beacon Street Tavern on Sunday evening and had a good time! While I agree with the previous post's complaints about the host/hostess--they underestimated the wait time for our table, and barely called out our name above speaking level in a loud bar (luckily we weren't to far from the hostess stand)--I thought the food was fantastic. I had the almond crusted goat cheese salad to start and the crispy eggplant for an entree. Both were served quickly and tasted fantastic. The service was good--I don't have any complaints about the way we were treated or the timeliness of getting our drinks and food. The price was very reasonable as well--I've paid more money for similar quality food at other resturants in Boston. There was a long wait at the place, and it was still crowded close to 9 pm on Sunday when we left...I understand why! I'll definitely be going back there again soon. Pros: Good food for the money, nice ambience, not bad wine list Cons: host/hostess needs to be better trained more
