Best

We have dined at some of the best restaurants in the world and Mark's is right up there in rank. The service, the food and the atmosphere never disappoint. Pros: null Cons:...

Worst

First of all reservations were difficult to get. The food presentation was good, the wine list OK. Hey I have had better in CA and TX. The chairs were not comfortable. A sligh...

Best food and service in the city! 2/18/2006

After working for another fine dining company in the city, I can honestly say that the service and food at Mark's is second to none! Highly recommend the roasted lamb loin. It was perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned, and absolutely the most tender and flavorful lamb I've had anywhere in the world. Staff was very informative and helpful without feeling too stuffy. Pros: Food, Ambience Cons: Felt rushed at times more

Consistency is very key 2/7/2006

I am a frequent visitor of Mark's and the service and food has been consistent at all times. Not to mention, they are both great. Though it's considered a fine-dining establishment, I don't find it stuffy like many other restaurants. I suggest taking advantage of the power lunches. The portions are about the same, but the price is less expensive. I could dine simply on a $6 or $7 bowl of bisque and be stuffed. Pros: food, staff more

Best food in Houston! 2/1/2006

Hands down the winner of best food in Houston... I love Marks. His cooking is amazing. Entrees are just fantastic. From fish, game, meats, or side dishes, he is a master at all A must try to believe. Chef Cox is the hardest working chef you will find anywhere. You always see him in the kitchen and rarely socializing. Try King Crab legs, crab tasting, foie gras & kobe beef, study of lamb, kobe trio, the pork chops, peanut butter sundae, rasberry shortbread tart... etc etc. Pros: Great Food, Charming decor, Good service Cons: Noise, Small wine list more

Outstanding Cuisine & Service 12/23/2005

My office went here for our holiday lunch last week and we were thoroughly impressed. The restaurant was so beautiful and our waiter was extremely knowledgable about every dish. He gave us a few recommendations and they were incredible. Pros: Food, Service, Wine List more

not impressed 6/14/2005

It is not worth the hype. Snooty wait staff. Food is ok. Ambiance is the only good thing. more

It is ok 6/6/2005

Everybody calm down. Who is writing these reviews. They have horrible service, they have a wait staff that thinks that is better than you. They have decent food, but good ambiance thats it. more

A Group at Marks with Children 5/19/2005

We made reservations for a group of fourteen for dinner after our daughter's graduation from The University of Houston. This included two children under 7-years old. I had a concern about the reviews concerning children and large groups. Pros: Parking, Value, Atmosphere Cons: Lighting a little dar more

How to Wow! 5/11/2005

Mark Cox has created and maintained a winner with his eye-catching, palate-pleasing temple to all that is gustatorily fabulous. With his attention to detail, waiters who work hard to please their patrons, and a menu that never fails to have more delightful selections than we can choose, how can one resist these temptations? There is always a new twist, an hors d'oeuvres plate with many stellar flavors that come together, a dessert presented in a stylish and delicious new way - this is what keeps patrons coming back! more

Bad Attitudes 3/14/2005

I've been here a few times and it's always been great - that is why I suggested it to 4 of my friends for our annual dinner reunion. We made reservations a couple of weeks ahead for 8:30 on a Saturday night. When we arrived at 8:30, we were told by the condescending girls at the front desk that it would be a few minutes. After asking several times and getting the manager involved, he said 'there's nothing I can do'. At 9:30 we left to go somewhere else. By that time, there was not one other person waiting for a table other than us. We have written letters to Mark, the owner, - we have never gotten a response. When the manager and the reservationists have horrible attitudes, it doesn't compensate. We will NEVER go back. Pros: Don't know ! Cons: Reservationists, Manager more

Simply Fantastic 2/14/2005

The food was beyond description it was so great. I took my wife here for our first anniversary and had an unbelievable time. The waiter seemed to know something about everything on the menu, including where the grapes for our wine were grown and the quality of the rustic tomatoes in one of our appetizers. It was a fantastic experience that I will not forget and a place that I will definitely visit again. Pros: Great Food, Excellent Wait Staff, Nice ambiance Cons: Tough to Park more

A memorable 5th anniversary. 10/23/2004

From the service to the food, it was beyond what I expected. My boyfriend surprised me to this exquisite restaurant that has topped all of the other restaurants he has taken me. The first thing I look for is service, which was excellent. They knew when to come up to us and didn't "bug" us. The staff were so cute, they each greeted me with a "happy anniversary". I am speechless when it came to the food. It was delicous! We ordered the chef's specialties/recommendations and I am very pleased. We were so full, but it was a must to try the desserts. Yummm! As a fellow restaurant owner, you tend to get picky and pay attention to every detail.. but I have no complaints at all! Thank you for making a part of my anniversary memorable! Pros: Great service, Great food & quality more

I am a convert! 6/13/2004

After asking a few people where to take some visitors, I settled on Mark's. We got a reservation for that same evening (Friday), and the experience was great from beginning to end. Unique & charming setting, friendly and informative service (not snooty at all), and very amenable to first-timers. Not only that, but this place delivered the goods. Unlike other "trendy"restaurants where the food is overrated, I am STILL daydreaming of this meal weeks later. I can still taste the seared ahi tuna melting in my mouth. Truly a knockout punch of a meal. Pros: Heavenly fare, Friendly staff, Wonderful atmosphere Cons: , No free delivery? :D more

Excellent 5/20/2004

My wife and I happened to pass by Mark's and decided to go in and try it because I read some good reviews about it here. We got there at 7:30 on a Friday evening with no reservation and in our jeans and t-shirts, but the hostess and waiter was really friendly, they were able to sit us right away even the dining room was almost full. I am very picky when it come to dinning but I was impressed, from the services to food to management. I will say Mark's is one of the best restaurant that I had and I will be a regular from now on. Pros: Food, Services, Friendlyness more

EXPERIENCE 5/9/2004

After all these years, we NEVER had a bad experience at Mark's. We always enjoyed the food, the environment and the services. Pros: specials, fish, drinks Cons: , tiny butter portion more

Outstanding 4/27/2004

A group of 7 of me and my closest friends went to Mark's for my friends birthday. It was all of our first times there so we were not quite sure of what to expect. We all wait tables at another fine dining restaurant in Houston so we are all very critical of service, usually disapointed when we go out. This time was an exception. We all had the Chef's selection, consisting of some of the most amazing courses i've ever eaten, each course accopanied by an excellent bottle of wine all chosen by our waiter. The wine was reasonably priced and the food was outstanding. We were all blown away and will definentally be back in the future. Pros: food, service, wine prices/selection more

Excellent 3/4/2004

The food and wine was excellent, some of it even exquisite; we had a chef sampler (several courses of the chef's choosing) with a wine sampler (each course came with a glass of wine to match it). It wasn't cheap, but if you want gourmet food it's not going to be cheap. The A/C was a little high (it was summer) and it looked like you had to have a reservation to get into the main dining room. (It's an old church and we were sitting where the side pews would be--not necessarily bad since it was more private and quieter). We would absolutely go back. The only downside was that the waiter was actually too attentive, a bit too talkative and too close by to give us descriptions and explanations, but maybe that was partly because of the menu we chose. Pros: excellent food, attentive waiter, knowledgable waiter Cons: , cold inside, waiter too attentive? more

The Best Fine Dining Venue In Houston 1/1/2004

As restaurants gain more publicity and stature in Houston society, I hold them to higher standards and this is usually at odds with the unfortunate trend of restaurants to decline precipitously when they gain notoriety. But Mark's is a very solid culinary experience. I would recommend requesting a seat in the cloister room away from the main floor, and I've arched an eyebrow at some of the young waiters who flirt a little too much, but these things are insignificant once you experience the food. As ever, I suggest that you allow the Mark's chefs to exercise their creativity, and you will not be disappointed. The tastes and presentations are superior and sublime. more

An Extremely Pleasant Evening 10/20/2003

After reading some of the other reviews, I had doubts about having my anniversary dinner at Marks. My doubts were unfounded.....the evening was wonderful. The food was very good and elegantly presented, it was not noisy at all, and the service was extremely pleasant, efficient, and not overbearing or pretentious. All in all, it was an extremely pleasant evening, and my wife and I will definitely go back. Although my words are not overly gushing, we really enjoyed the diiner and evening. The only drawback was the cold A-C blowing on our heads, and the lady at the table next to us with a voice that would make fingernails on the blackboard sound pleasant. Thank goodness for good food which kept her busy eating, and not talking, for most of the evening. Pros: Food and Presentation, Service, Atmosphere Cons: Cold AC more
