Best

We have dined at some of the best restaurants in the world and Mark's is right up there in rank. The service, the food and the atmosphere never disappoint. Pros: null Cons:...

Worst

First of all reservations were difficult to get. The food presentation was good, the wine list OK. Hey I have had better in CA and TX. The chairs were not comfortable. A sligh...

Editorial review from Citysearch 6/16/2013

I've been here before in the past, and the food is nothing like it was before. BTW, they have this stupid cell phone thing there where you are not allowed to use your phone there. STUPID more

More Bad than Good 1/13/2012

I've been to Mark's several times, but not in the last 2 years. It's always been great, but maybe they are getting cocky and resting on their success because this visit was an extreme disappointment. Pros: null Cons: null more

Love it 12/20/2011

During my week of gastro-gluttony, I decided to spend a serious chunk of change at Mark's. Pros: null Cons: null more

Overpriced 10/30/2011

I will not be returning to this restaurant. I visited Mark's with 4 girlfriends. We were all astounded by the prices so we were expecting quite a fabulous meal. My meal was sub standard. The meat was almost all fat and I should have sent it back. The waiter was somewhat arrogant at times. I give them an A+ on atmosphere, but the total package is not worth the effort. Pros: null Cons: null more

Decent Dinner 5/5/2011

I went here with my boyfriend for our anniversary dinner, and to tell you the truth, it wasn't as what I expected. It was nice, cozy and it is actually pretty cool the fact that the restaurant was an old church. but I was bit disappointed because the day that we went there for dinner, their choices on the menu were mostly seafood which my boyfriend does not eat. But other than that, our server was nice and funny and he did take care of us. It was just a little weird to me because I have been to many fine dinning in Houston and When they give out a steak or when they serve the food, they usually ask us if the meat is cooked the way how they want it before they leave, but they didn't at Mark's. It was not the greatest service I have ever had, but it was good enough. more

not impressed 12/17/2010

Took a date there last year for what was supposed to be a great meal at Houston's most romantic restaurant. we were seated near the kitchen door and had constant traffic by our table. Service was slow and not very attentive. Quite dissapointed. more

Great place, great meal 9/29/2010

This was my first trip to Marks and it is my new favorite restaurant. The menu choices are unique and outstanding while the service was fast and efficient. We had several entrees and appetizers and each was prepared and served flawlessly. The wine list was impressive and was not priced too outrageously. I can not think of anything that was less than excellent about our experiences. more

Fine Dining 5/2/2010

Mark's just might be my all time favorite restaurant in Houston. Every meal I have had at Mark's has been superb. The service is terrific. The atmosphere is really relaxing and pleasant. This is a pricey restaurant, but well worth it. If looking for a good choice for that certain special occassion, this is the place to go. more

Bad experience on a celebratory day! 3/24/2010

One of the most overrated fine dining restaurants in all of Houston. Forget about any form of service if you are a young professional looking to go out and celebrate a special occasion. Mark himself came out and greeted everyone his own age but ignored two tables, ours and another occupied by young couples in their late twenties. The only time we were treated well was near the end of our meal right before the waiter brought us the check! Pros: Appetizer Cons: Customer Service more

I actually wanted steak sauce 12/26/2009

Too many tables too close together. the veal and steak were bland with very little seasoning or flavor. they tried too hard on entrees and there was too much rosemary on the potatoes. Pros: pours a stiff cosmopolitan Cons: bland overpriced food more

Highly Overrated, much better restaurants out there 12/10/2009

I took my girlfriend here for her birthday, had read the reviews and heard from friends that it was a good spot. Had a 7 o'clock appointment and had no trouble getting a table. The restaurant is beautiful, the wine cellar that is viewable from the restaurant is very impressive. But that is where my positive experience ended. I browsed the wine list, almost impossible finding something that is under $100. The wine we did have, Caduceus, was actually quite nice at $105, but I'm sure it can be found for less elsewhere. We started with the quail and foie gras appetizer, far from impressed. To many strange flavors that didn't compliment the dish at all. She had the Carribean Lobster special, I had the Shrimp dish. Both were topped with a heavy amount of sauce that completely took away any flavor you would get from the Lobster or Shrimp. Very sour and pungent taste that lingered far too long. She had the Creme Brulee which was the highlight of the meal, I had the Chocolate sampler which was far from memorable. Server seemed to be slammed, and his visits to the table were few and far between. Our table was terrible, against a wall and felt very cramped the whole time. Pros: Wine, beautiful restaurant. Cons: Food, service, cramped atmosphere. more

maybe 3.5 stars on its best night (which was not tonight) 11/19/2009

Well, I just purchased a $200 lesson for two. I'll dispatch with the good first. Dessert excepting, the food ranged from fine to very good (almost great in small parts). The flavors came more from spice and salt than the simpler flavors from the ingredients, which I thought was unusual for a place that seems somewhat chef driven. The foie gras was a little burnt, not seared, and everything I ordered had something sausagey involved. Cuisine, it was not, but it was generally enjoyable and there was a lot of it. Three and a half stars for the food. Pros: there was usually something tasty on the plate Cons: service was MISERABLE; misses--some big--with each dish more

Mark's American Cuisine is Romantic! 10/1/2009

I've been to Marks only recently for the first time. It is so beautiful, the wait staff is so attentive. You can't find that just anywhere. We went there for a special occassion and the food was wonderful, the desserts were to die for. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. more

Excellent! 9/29/2009

My husband and I wanted something special for our 9 yr anniversary. We have been to many restaurants in Houston and this was the best dining experience we have had. All the food was delicious; everything from the appetizer to the soup, salad, main course and dessert. The server was very knowledgeable, attentive and friendly. We were there for almost 3 hours and never felt rushed. We even received a complimentary dessert for our anniversary. If you want a good dining experience where not a single detail is missed, I highly recommend this restaurant!!! Pros: Everything Cons: None more

Voted Houston's Most Romantic Restaurant, Mark's American Cuisine is located in a 1920s renovated church. The golden ceilings, hand painted deco walls, and the candlelit tables provide guests with an intimate escape from the outside world. Mark's boasts three meeting rooms: two private - The Cloisters, which seats 32 to 40 people and The Alcove, a tasting room for 5 to 8 people, and a semi-private room, The Loft, which seats 18 to 24 people.

Dining at Mark's American Cuisine is a true epicurean adventure. Chef Mark Cox prepares not just one, but four unique menus for his patrons. Houstonians and visitors will find food unlike that in any other restaurant.

Mark's wine list, recognized by The Wine Spectator, offers each customer the opportunity to pair the perfect meal with enhancing wines. Under the attentive eye of Mark's Wine Director, Saree Mulhern, vineyards and vintages are selected by taste and value instead of by "brand name."
