My wife and I bought a refrigerator and gas range from Dick Van Dyke Appliances in December 2012, $2476.58 total. We had seen them at lowes, so we knew what we wanted. We came into Dick Van Dyke with Lowes printouts in hand with model numbers etc. They didn't have them in stock but could get them for us, no problem. Great! We didn't mind the delay (Lowes had them in stock) as we were still finishing the house, really preferring to buy from Dick Van Dyke, more local company and better warranty. We told the salesperson this, she was very nice. It took about a month, both units arrived damaged,(dents) they sourced the parts, took awhile but things got repaired, no problem. Fast forward 16 months, we have water leaking into the freezer compartment, can't figure it out. I called the service department to make an appointment. The phone lady said it would be $60 out of town service call + parts + labor. Oh, but we bought them there 5/10 protection plan, right? Um, no. She said she didn't know why we don't have the 5/10 protection plan. Usually the sales person notes on the invoice when there is no 5/10 warranty, she said, but no, says factory warranty only (one year, expired). She said maybe the salesperson was new. She recited a few reasons why we might have no warranty, but didn't know why in my case. She was very polite. Well, ok, by. I thought about this for a few hours, then called back. I really need to understand what's going on here, after all that's why we bought from you instead of Lowes, big box store, doesn't stand behind their products, right? Phone lady #2 didn't know why we had no warranty either, but it was clear we didn't, maybe closeout product, special order, some other possibilities. "Well, neither appliance was in stock, you had to order them" I said. That's it, she said, special order, not covered. Really? So out of stock = special order = no 5/10 protection plan warranty = left blowing in the wind. "I can see how that would be frustrating", she said. For the record she was extremely polite also. After hanging up I rummaged through my papers and found the invoice. About mid page it says Mfg Warranty on RFS/RAS. I had signed it. This is the kind of sucker move I expect from car dealers and insurance salesmen, not the local appliance store. The service man came this afternoon, installed a drain retrofit kit. "we've had a lot of trouble with these" he said. "they made this part to fix the problem". It didn't take him long, he too was very professional. Design flaw. It cost me $156.77. Be very careful if you shop at Dick Van Dyke Appliances. Read everything carefully, don't expect the salesperson to be straight with you. After all they might be "new".
