I had been to many employment agencies in New York and honestly was beginning to get frustrated. The Harper Group and Temps by Harper put every other agency in NY to shame. The minute you walk through the door I stopped holding my breath and realized I was not going to be treated like a number. Jean and Jill welcomed me, offered me tea or coffee ... even lunch and made me feel so at home. Where else do you get these offers? Usually it's "can you type? come meet her? what does she do?" Usually you will find an agency that will treat you like you are just another number. That's not the case with Jill and Jean. I am a recent college graduate, when I first started hunting for jobs, it was not smooth sailing for me. I have enrolled in over 12 temp agencies, posted my resume almost eveywhere, and applied to about 30 jobs a day. While I was feeling down and out because it became overwhelming for me, the Harper Group called. I must admit I was hesitant at frist to come in for an interview, but Jill and Jean said that it would be really worth my while if I came. As we all know temp agencies, do not usually try to eagerly persuade a newbie. I swallowed my bad experiencnces that I have had with agencies in the past. Finally, I enetered their cozy office not knowing what to expect. I was treated with great courtesy and respect, from then on I knew that this was a beginning without an end. They relieved me from the distress of looking for a job. I contacted the Harper Group for some temp work to supplement another part-time job I had at the time. I heard from them immediately after I sent my resume in, and had an assignment within the week that fit perfectly with my schedule. I enjoyed Jean and Jill so much, that I was more than happy to start temping at their office the following week. Seeing them every day was a joy! These two ladies could not be nicer, and they are truly committed to finding the best jobs for their applicants. I was always paid promptly and found it easy to get in touch with someone if I had questions or problems, day or night. When I recently received a permanent position at another company, they were gracious in accommodating my transition as I had to leave my temp job earlier than expected. I started my job search about a month ago. I had a strong resume and interview well so I thought that I would find a job quickly by using a recruiting agency. I registered with NINE agencies. Three weeks later I was still unemployed. Why? It was always the same scenario--they would call me and rave about my resume, I would go in and fill out lots of forms, interview with one recruiter, meet their "colleagues" and then I was quickly escorted out and promised that they would call me soon. Most of the agencies never called me...the ones that did had terrible jobs. They would try to convince me to go on the interview/take the job even if it had bad hours, bad pay, bad location or had nothing to do with my interests...all because they wanted to make their commission. Just when I was about to give up using recruiters, I got a call from Jean of The Harper Group. I expressed my frustration and basically told her that I wasn't going to waste my time anymore unless I knew what jobs they had available. Jean began to tell me what they had in detail so I knew she was for real. I met with Jill and Jean on a Tuesday, interviewed at a top-notch creative company on a Wednesday and had a permanent job offer in hand by Thursday!!! How's that for fast? All I can say is that while there are tons of recruiters in the city, there is none like The Harper Group. This small, personal and competent team (of two) get more done than an agency with a staff of 100. They are honest and down-to-earth. They have REAL contacts. They are not going to waste your time with empty promises. They would not send you to a job that wasn't good enough for them. I think most of us would agree that 'job-hunting' isn't fun; whether you're looking to move in, move up, or well, just booted out. Sending out your resume to online classified ads feel likes buying raffle tickets for a brand-new mercedes. Yes there's hope, but at the end of the day it is just a numbers game.
