Best

For us non-celebrities who don?t want to wait in line two hours to get into a dance club, M Lounge above Republic restaurant is a great place to go. It maintains an upscale, chic ...

Worst

Went out on a saturday night to celebrate my buddy's bday and got a table. There were 6 of us to begin wtih and were expecting a couple other people to join us later,so we started...

what was that other guy thinking? 5/30/2006

My girl and I decided to try it out as a referral from a friend. We had no problems getting in, or getting seated. The restaurant is amazing! The energy was fantastic. With that, we had to get some help with the wine list since we hardly recogzined any of them. The chef selected a few to choose and they were perfect. The chef sent a first course to the table that apparently most people get it definatly made us feel like we were in a welcoming environment. The food, the service, the ambience couldn"t be beat this Thursday night! Congrats. Pros: great valet, great stemware more

I guess we got lucky 5/30/2006

We met some friends for a party of 6 last week on a slow weeknight. The restaurant was never half full. I really thought I would hate this place, especially after reading the previous reviews, but I really couldn't. We had good service and the food was pretty good, but not great. Overall, it was overpriced, but they clearly need to pay for all the expensive decor (one of the private bar rooms upstairs is wallpapered with REAL ALLIGATOR SKIN). This restaurant IS stunning - totally like a Vegas spot. The Monte Cristo sandwich app was soggy, but my filet was good. The sides were small and unimpressive, except the truffle french fries, which were AMAZING (but still small). The bar rooms upstairs seem like an amazing place to hang out or throw a party if you want to drop $5000 to rent out the space... Pros: decor, hot-spot ambience Cons: expensive, overpriced more

what a change! 5/29/2006

when i decided to revisit i was not ready for i expected. The buildinhg that was once a night club has been beutifully rebuilt as a showcase of a dining room. The wine wall that spands all the way up to the ceiling and i finally got to see the wine angle take flight. Menu was a nice change from the norm with some of the old favorites. Steaks were absolutely the best in town. more

Out of Business Soon ! 5/24/2006

Beautiful Restaurant... and that's about it. The service was awful and the food was mediocre. Not much left to say. It was so bad that the folks next to us left half way... and vowed to NEVER RETURN. - We feel the same way! I give Republic another 6 months max... before they go out of business. It is a very competitive business and Republic has nothing to offer. Don't bother trying Republic, it SUCKS! Pros: Ambience Cons: Mediocre Food, Bad Attitude, Cheap Cocktails more

ugh 5/20/2006

Went there on a Friday night with some girlfriends. There were way too many girls there. And the drinks are WAY overpriced. A cosmo cost $14!! Ridiculous - we're never coming back here. Pros: location, street parking Cons: too many girls, drink prices more

Awesome Decor 5/9/2006

Went on a Saturday night dinner date. Make sure to reserve a table near the fire place or in the center, we sat by a door that had a lot of traffic. We asked to be moved, however, both the hostess and waitress came with a lame excuse. Service was lacking, but the drinks from the bar were STRONG (a plus)! The food was tasty (the lobster plate). Not sure about the prices because my date paid. The bar/lounge area was empty on a Saturday night after 10:00. Maybe they need more hype. Pros: ambience, strong drinks Cons: service more

What a joke... 5/5/2006

I have never encountered such incompetent service in such a polished venue. We were seated late (for no apparent reason, since the restaurant was empty), waiting an hour and 45 minutes to get our first course, waiting 30 minutes to get our wine, and had our table cleared, along with the wine, when we stepped out for a cigarette. Apparently the wait staff thought we had dined and dashed since we had complained about the delay. Would not surprise me if that happened often. DO NOT EAT HERE. more

I Can't Believe They Are In Business 5/5/2006

I would ONLY recommend this place to anybody who LOVES over-priced food, awful awful awful awful awful service, pretentious ambiance, FAKE friendliness and average food. If you don't enjoy these things...then this place is not for you. I definitely know it's NOT FOR ME. My server may have been the dummist (yes I spelled it that way on purpose) person I have met in my five years in LA. I can't even repeat what she used as an excuse for my food being late...it's beyond absurd. Having been a server in the restaurant business for years, I can say that the management has their head up their a**es. I give it a year...TOPS. Pros: Nice street., Ummm., Ummm. Cons: Overpriced, Stupid Staff, Takes Forever more

Dont waste your time. 4/30/2006

REPUBLIC SUCKS! WORST SERVICE EVER! I have to say i was a little bit excited to go here for dinner. I was told by many people in the last few weeks that it was a really nice place. I WILL agree that the restaurant is a great-looking, trendy place. But the food was so-so (overpriced) and the service was the worst i have ever had. It just goes to show you, you can spend a lot of money on the facility, but it has nothing to do with the actaul dining experience. I hope it closes down in a month. Pros: nice decor Cons: horrible service, empty more

Impressive 4/25/2006

Welcomed by "Secret service" wannabee doormen asking for ID as if you would be entering a nightclub. Well I guess, it's pretty much a trend in hip LA restaurants. Thankfully I cleared the entrance, I was promptly seated in the main dining. Very impressive decor with high ceiling. Finest touch was the, I want to say 12 foot, wine cellar. The food was excellent, the service "cute", I had crab cake to start and chop venison for entree. The wine list was good. I was dining near Villaraigosa who also must have got his table late like I did (10:30 pm) which made me feel better about not able to get in earlier. Pros: decor, friendly staff Cons: front door attitude more

Ususally I'm understanding but this was absurd! 4/24/2006

We were there for a birthday. The place is put together very nicely. BUT I'd like to give a time line of events (this was a Monday night); We got to the venue @ 8:55pm; we sat @ 9:40 and ordered immediately; Our wine came @ 10:15; Our appetizers came @ 10:45. We cancelled our entrees and no one I REPEAT NO ONE acknowledged it. I have worked in the service industry for 7+ years and never once have I left an establishment feeling the way I did last night. DO NOT GO THERE. more

Not worth the price of admission 4/23/2006

Contrary to the other reviews, I found Republic to be another example of what is wrong with restaurants in LA. The staff was poor, the food was edible (at best), and the menu selection was totally haphazard. Republic left much to be desired. All this, wrapped in an expensive tab. The one positive is the decor is over the top elegant but still does not make up for an overall poorly executed dining establishment. Save your money, it's not worth it. Pros: Interior Cons: Food, Staff, Price more

Our experience 4/15/2006

The food was perfect. We had a party of four and had a perfect time. If Republic reads this review...our only advice would be to add more seating upstairs. It is a fun lounge feel that requires more seating. Standing in L.A sucks! Otherwise you would be missing out on a restraunt and it's staff putting out spot on service from the moment you step in. more

Simply a great time 4/14/2006

Didn't have a chance to catch dinner but stayed for my friend's birthday for drinks. Everybody was so nice, even the doorman! It helped that the place had a great, warm glow to it with a waterfall as an entrance to the patio. The lounge was upstairs; not good for stumbling drunks but luckily enough this place kept away the obnoxious Hollywooders and kept the more classy crowd. The drinks were strong and the service was nice. What else could you ask for? I'd love to come again to taste the food. Pros: ambience, service, decor more

Beauiful space with some rough edges 4/13/2006

A rough diamond in progress. Beautiful room with standard comfort food offerings from duck confit, pulled pork to shrimp scampi. Amazing 24 oz. cowboy ribeye for the famished as well as the dry aged NY steak. Great Colorado lamb chops and combo pork selection too. Sides of Mac and Cheese and creamed spinach were not up to the local standards (and not family sized as described by the waitress). Don't want to sound too negative since we enjoyed our experience but as they said this is a "soft opening" so keep up the good work and make this a great success! Pros: Great Ambience, Good food, GOOD SERVICE Cons: Wine service more

Beautiful, Quality, Nothing else like it in LA 4/13/2006

When you first walk in the place will take your breathe away. There is nothing in LA that compares to its decore. Its very beautiful and elegant, but a the same time very funky and cool. The service was ever so accomodating and the food was top notch. The filet melted in your mouth (And I'm not a filet girl, but would absolutely order it again) It was the best piece of meat I've ever had in my life, better than Arnie Mortons. The Ceasar salad was delicious and light and the pork belly dish was unbelieveable as well. The stellar wine Wall is beautiful and the slick burgandy croccodile wall pappered room with fire places and low lights upstairs was so cool. The whole experience is such a treat. This restaurant is a must experience. Pros: Amazing Food, Beautiful Decore, Quality Service Cons: None more

Vegas in LA ! Outstanding. 3/22/2006

I just spent 6 days, in Vegas, treated at a service level afforded to only the highest of the biggest rollers... several hours ago, returning from LAX, thinking how much I was going to miss Vegas-style pampering, I noticed Republics discrete signage and stopped. Walking into Republic, I felt like I was walking into the intrigue and decor of a new, chic Vegas restaurant... that my Vegas trip had somehow and miraculously been transported to LA... The Hostesses welcomed me and I instantly knew that everything was going to be great... My server was a delight... her assistants virtually undetectable management humbly attentive Republic left me feeling that the whole establishment was seamlessly integrated to create a flawless experience just for me... after the luscious dinner, my server toured me around Republics themed niches, similar to WynnVegass design of interconnected, individual experiences, each with its own entertainment purpose and flavor... Pros: Service, Ambience, Food Cons: none more

Get over yourselves 3/21/2006

I found Republic flashy yet unimpressive and pretentiousextremely overpriced, and not much to show for the price you pay. I had the blue-nosed sea bass, and it was dry and flavorless, except for the fatty bacon wrapped around it. I ordered a side of grilled vegetables, and they were cold and also flavorless. Crunchy eggplant is not good. The others in my party were equally disappointed. Though the decor is kind of cool, the room was noisy and dimly lit. In the corridor to the bathroom there is a ceiling to floor mirror that reflects the actual entrance, and both my husband and I walked right into it, and neither of us was drinking. I wish we were. The food might have tasted better. Pros: interesting decor Cons: pricey, below average food, noisy more

Elegant yet friendly 3/17/2006

Beautiful, tastefully appointed in earthtones and textured fabrics, and comfortable. There is music on a very good sound system, and the sound of waterfalls, yet the acoustics are so well done that it was easy to hear everyone at a large table. The ample wait staff was clearly proud of their restaurant and genuinely wanted you to enjoy it as much as they do. Our waitress was delightful, not at all officious, and genuinely cared if we were pleased. Best appetizer: surf and turf tartar, crab cakes close second. The breads are baked fresh. The pulled pork was the best, but the sea bass was moist and delicious, and the steaks were tender and large. The floor to ceiling wine rack is part of the entertainment. The chocolate souffle was excellent too. Well worth the price. Pros: ambience, service, food quality Cons: pricey more

Southern Belle! 3/15/2006

Republic is my new favorite place in LA!! The space is grand and beautiful and I was so incredibly impressed by the food. The pork lollipops were so tender and the Bass was absolutely delicious! A definite must is the mac n' cheese. Sinfully delicious! My date and I decided to indulge in dessert and the creme brulee was AMAZING. It had butterscotch, berry and chocolate. Highly recommended! Our server was also extrememly knowledeagble (cute too!). So exciting to see such an amazing and unique new restaurant. We plan on going back again and again - even it is just for the Mojitos which were also a HUGE hit!! Pros: Delicious Food, Great Space, Excellent Service Cons: Pricey more

  • In Short
Through an eye-catching glass-block entrance lies a sculpted-concrete and exotic-wood-based interior. In the dining room, circular low-back chairs and banquette seating are surrounded by an open fireplace, 20-foot waterfall, and towering wine cellar attended by flying "wine fairies." Menu selections highlight evolved steakhouse fare with southern touches such as barbecue pork three ways (pulled, loin and belly), venison chop and a bacon-wrapped blue nose bass. The bar and lounge feature circular fire pits, James Bond-inspired sofas and an open ceiling for stargazing.
