Best

For us non-celebrities who don?t want to wait in line two hours to get into a dance club, M Lounge above Republic restaurant is a great place to go. It maintains an upscale, chic ...

Worst

Went out on a saturday night to celebrate my buddy's bday and got a table. There were 6 of us to begin wtih and were expecting a couple other people to join us later,so we started...

Worst Restaurant in LA 2/18/2007

This was by far the worst restaurant I have been to in a long time. The food was horrible, not as it was represented on the menu and extremely over priced. The service was just as bad. The server never checked on our table. The atmosphere was neat but not worth seeing as the food and service were so awful. As a final insult, they charge $7.00 for the valet. Pros: Ambience Cons: Food, Service and Parking more

Decor? Yes! Service? ok Food? hmm.. 2/13/2007

Valet: $7 avg check for 2: $200 Food: we got complementry bread n salmon appetizer..i noticed not everyone recived them..i duno why but i thought that was nice..lobster corn dog was good.(aww..only 3 pcs) , cowboy ribeye was tastey n tender. (my server said this is the most popular dish here), my bf ordered pork. it had no taste n too dry.choclate bread pudding was good. i never knew it can taste that way..gourmet bread pudding..thats what it was. mac n cheese..it was blend..fries..they were good.but noting special about them. decor: trendy. i liked their decor more than the food. seating: capacity in the dining room is for 75ppl i think. next to fire place is for 2 tops, for 4ppl, u will be seating in the middle. crowd: ppl in their 30s n 40s overall experience: i think this is one of those places u might wana check it out..its a nice place..will i go back for food? ahh...probably not.. Pros: decor Cons: food more

Extremely arrogant, stupid and unprofessional doormen 2/10/2007

4 of my girlfriends and I were on the guest list for Friday night at Republic. This was our first time there; however, we did not know that we?d be greeted by extremely uptight and rude bouncers. We waited outside for an hour and a half, and were told to stand in the line which was practically empty, since they were letting in even walk-ins, and of course not to forget the ?VIP? line for bottle service. I think the doorman did not like our group personally, maybe because we stood up in our situation and wanted to speak with the manager. He lied to us that we were not on the guest list, even though I showed him a confirmation email that I got on my phone, and he completely humiliated us by letting us be the only ones waiting in the line. And honestly, we were a decent looking group of girls. So we decided to not waste our money on an undeserving place and easily got into AREA across the street to have a great time. more

Horrible Service! 2/6/2007

They seated us 1/2 hour late and took our order 1/2 hour thereafter. There were no apologies and the hostesses are downright rude. This is why trendy LA restaurants (which do have great scenes) quickly go out of business because they are lacking one critical success factor - repeat patrons. The food was quite good (e.g. beet salad, chilean sea bass), but you have to be willing to wait and tolerant of bad service. I think the later cancels out the former... Pros: Food, ambience Cons: Service, Service, Service more

Be careful of reservations 1/18/2007

They seem to book private parties frequently and will cancel your reservation. This has happened to me twice. The one good thing is that they do call you promptly to tell you they are cancelling your reservation due to a private event. (booked through opentable so i'm not sure who the foe should be) more

TOO MUCH DRAMA 11/27/2006

We were supposedly added to a guest list by one of the promoters. When we got there, the obnoxious girl at the front first said we were on the list then she said the promoter must have forgotten. She said she could accomodate us if we purchased a bottle. Well, not all of us like to drink the same thing, so we ended up leaving. I guess she can't add or else she would have realized that 14 people at two $14 drinks equals more than her $250 bottle. We ended up having a great time elsewhere and spending way more than $250. I am sure the place is great, but the drama to get in is not. I'm sure the "doll" at the front is just doing her job. Pros: seems like a hip spot Cons: the drama to get in more

It was OK but not great. 11/24/2006

I took my boyfriend here for his 30th birthday. The place is as beautiful as it is in the pictures, although a lot smaller. The staff is very friendly, from the minute we walked in. Our waiter was great! Service was great!. The salad was good, although very small for the price. I had a black angus filet, and ordered it medium well. It came out charred, had to send it back. The waiter was gracious about it. When it came back, it was better but still very overcooked. Ultimately we didnt get charged for it but i have never had a steak overcooked before. Overall it was a pleasant experience, however the food was just ok. Pros: Ambience, service, decor Cons: food more

Fantastic and Creative Food; Beautiful Decor 11/18/2006

I am always a little nervous going to a "trendy" restaurant but I was pleasantly surprised that this beautiful restaurant has such wonderful, creative food. My friend and I shared the lobster corn dogs (morsels of sweet lobster meet encased in little corn dogs - so cute), truffled french fries (skinny fries with a light touch of salt and truffle oil), mac & cheese (so cheezy with crumbly bits on top; i think there's bacon in this) and white salmon over a bed of corn (tender, fresh and sweet) - and we enjoyed absolutely everything! We also had drinks at the lounge afterwards (dark, cozy, good crowd). I would definitely come back again for the food and/or drinks. Only downside that evening - i was seated right next to the fireplace and it was way too hot! Pros: Food (truffled fries, lobster corn dogs) and Decor more

after waiting long for desert, it was on the house 11/2/2006

My gf and I came over here after eating at Belmont which was so LOUD. I couldn't hear her at all so decided to walk over here for a drink afterwards. I agree with the other review about the "secret service" doorman. very confusing. told us there's a private party and if you're not in private party then can't go in. so we were about to leave, then they told us we can go to lounge area where we first told him we wanted to go. which is the left door of the "water door". I was wondering why he didn't just direct us to it in the beginning. Maybe the store should have a sign "private party here" "non-private there" instead of putting door man. I was put off immediately, but then entered the store. Very nice and great bartendar. no crowds on Thursday nite, nice. Gf had a champagne and I a cocktail, bill came to $40. Our desert took a long time, we were almost going to leave and they told me the cake was on the house. nice nice. Will come next time on weekdays since it's walking distance to my place. Not sure about food. Pros: impressive decor, bring friends u want to impress Cons: scary door man, hard to park, $$$$ more

Best Service, Food, and Welcoming Place 10/21/2006

The Republic is a great place to celebrate your birthday or any other occasion. The host, Elizabeth, is absolutely the best. She was so welcoming and accommodating. I had a dinner event for 15 people and their service was amazing (thanks Kyle). We sat within minutes, our drinks and food were on time, and they created a special menu just for us. And the FOOD IS REALLY GOOD. From the appetizers to the salads, to the entrees, everybody loved the food. The atmosphere is really nice and on Saturday nights, there's a DJ that plays really good music. It's definitely worth what you pay for. What more could you ask for?? Pros: Elizabeth, Elizabeth, Elizabeth Cons: Pricy, but DEFINETELY WORTH IT more

great decor...now the food 9/15/2006

My Wife and I went last week and I have to say the place is amazing! The angus filet is incredible as well as the mussel and clams appetizer. The new York steak was only so-so as was the hierloom tomato appetizer. The chef needs only to kick the food up two notches and this will be the GREAT Los Angeles dining experience. It puzzles me as to why the food isn't the highest quality when the atmosphere is totally over the top. I hope the chef reads these reviews because I would like to see this place last. I shouldn't get a bill for $350 and be able to say the food was so -so. more

Fab 9/5/2006

Great dining experience. Delicious cocktails, try the "Republic". Staff is amazing. The corn dog appetizer is a must. Beautiful restaurant with a great selection of wine. The ribeye was juicy and cooked to perfection. Finally an eatery with a hip vibe and great food to match. Pros: atmosphere more

save your money 8/9/2006

Eat at Houstons instead. The atmosphere is interesting and the service was good. However, the food was mediocre and terribly overpriced. more

one word: FANTASTIC 7/18/2006

I took my brother (in town from TX and who is quite the foodie) here for his birthday last night and we had the BEST dinner EVER! the space is really nice and comfortable not pretentious or Hollywood-y. The two-story dining room with inlets of water running down the length of the wall and the two-story wine case that a woman harnesses up to retrieve your wine bottle was all beautiful. The service was great. the hostess was friendly and seated us very promptly and our waiter could not have been more obliging. He was very knowledgeable with the wines and helped us choose an amazing yet quite affordable bottle. All the food we had was great. We started with the lobster corn dog appetizer (big chunks of lobster deep fried on stix with a spicey mustard sauce). We both had the black angus filet (just melted in your mouth) and split sides of creamed spinach (with a wonderful nutmeg-y flavor), mac n' cheese (fantastic smokey flavor) and the best sauteed mushrooms i've had in my life (sauteed with rosemary)... yummy. This is now my new steak place! We even stuck around and had one more glass of wine in the bar because we didn't want our evening to end. Republic put Bridge (where we'd gone a few days before) to shame.... for the same price mind you. Pros: ambiance, service, food Cons: that i didn't discovered this place earlier! more

Paradise in LA 6/19/2006

Went here. Loved it! I mean i absolutely loved it so much so i had to write a review. Lots of girl servers but i had the one guy and he provided which very well might be the best service i have EVER gotten in Los Angeles. And i eat out at all the top places. He told me to get lobster corn dogs which were like nothing i had ever tasted. I ordered the kobe special, prepared with wild mushrooms, and could not believe that anyone had ever trashed this place. I think that people expect too much out of restaurants once they open and don't realize there is a learning curve for the staff as well. Go here, i promise, the service, food, and especially decor are not to be missed. I'll be back many times more. Pros: Service, Decor, Food more

a nice surprise 6/12/2006

when so much attention is focused on decor and atmosphere it usually means that the sacrifice will be the food. At Republic they manage to have a great looking space and provide attentive service and delicious food. well done. The monte cristo appetizer and the pork sampler main course were perefct in answering the need of a meal that is all about taste and not caring about calories! some may complain about service being a bit slow but thsi is not McDonald's the idea is toi enjoy the entire meal and company you are with not dine and dash. more

So So 6/7/2006

Spoting the restaurant's sign from the street was a little difficult. Street parking and valet was very nerve racking. The doormen at the entrance seemed a little odd, we felt like we were going to a very exclusive and stuffy club. But then we were warmly greeted by the beautiful hostesses who welcomed us to relax and have a cocktail in the lounge while the rest of our party showed. We waited a while until someone finally came and took our cocktail orders. The decor was absolutely wonderful and the sofas are quite comfortable. The whole overall feel of the lounge was very welcoming. But the air conditioning could have been turned down a bit. When we moved into the dining room the overall decor was absolutly spectacular! As I was gazing at the decor, I noticed the hostess had exchanged some of our napkins for black napkins which was an added touch. Before our first course we received an amuse which no one explained what it was. The food runners just happened to drop if off and run away. Our server then came by and explained what it was. He was very entertaining and answered most of our questions. 1/3 through our meal we were handed off to another server who didn't seem like he had any experience at all. He was very unattentive and couldn't answer any of our questions. He accidently spilled on one of our guests and seemed very standoffish and unprofessional. We had other staff continuously try to take away dishes that we were still eating from but wouldn't take away dishes that we didn't need anymore. Not to mention we sat for about 10 minutes after our entrees were dropped before we received any silverware. For the price we were charged we expected a little more service etiquette. Most of us didn't care for our dishes but the steak was absolutly delicious! I highly recommend it. Close to the end of our meal we finally got to witness the wine angel's flight which was very cute. After being halfway finished with our desserts, we still weren't offered coffee or tea. We had to flag down our server and when it finally came to our table the coffee was luke warm. After our meal we were offered a tour by the manager who was very sweet. But the hostess ended up giving us the tour which I beleive was the wine angel as well, talk about multi-tasking! The space was amazing. I didn't even know that there were so many other rooms available. We will definitely come back for drinks because we love the feel of the the overall space. And maybe we'll come back just the two of us for the steaks too. There is definitely some potential to the restaurant so hopefully they'll work out the kinks. more

NY'r comes to LA and finds greatest place 6/4/2006

I came to LA to visit my sister. She had heard of this restaurant from a friend. We went on a Friday night and found the most beautiful space I had ever seen on all my trips to LA. The food was amazing too. Definatly try the Lobster Corn Dogs and Cowboy Ribeye. Service was great and friendly. I might take a trip to LA just to go to Republc, don't tell my sister. Pros: Food, Decor, Service more

Impressive place; disappointing food! 6/1/2006

They did an unbelievable job with the ambience of Republic... now if they could only learn to cook! I went there with a small party and not one of us liked our dish. Two of the dishes were so bad that they were inedible! I can't imagine why someone would spend so much on decor and so little on making great food that would ultimately get me to come back. Totally overpriced bad food! Pros: Ambiance Cons: Overpriced, Food more
