Port of Call is a New Orleans gem, a real, honest-to-goodness JOINT that does not pretend to be anything but a dive (New Orleans-speak for ""Casual Restaurant-Bar for the Locals""...

Best Steaks and Burgers in the Quarter 9/5/2008

We last ate at Port of Call on August 1, 2008. We ordered a Filet Mignon to split. It came with a nice salad with Italian Dressing, two fresh buns, a potato with just butter ( as we requested) and a filet, perfectly done as we ask - medium rare. We have been coming here for the past two years, and always sit at the bar. Its an eclectic bar for sure, but don't let ancient mariner memorabilia, and dark environs scare you. The place is a gem. The staff have been there for years, and are as much of a reason to go as any. These people treat us like family after being here just a few times. The burgers are great, and the potatoes can be anything you want, as they have more ingredients than you can imagine. We only order the same drinks, so I cant comment on the Monsoons, etc.. But the traffic for them is great. The clientele are locals and tourists - no riff raff. With the turnover nightly, they run a clean ship. We came from San Francisco, and spend a good amount of time here. These are the best burgers we have ever had, and the best steaks for both size and price. If you want to enjoy it for the first time, get there when they open, and choose a spot to enjoy both the food, and the other people enjoying the food. It can be quite busy at times, but keep in mind that the food and drink are worth waiting for! Pros: Food, Staff, Price Cons: furniture, they dont always open on time more

Wonderful 7/2/2007

This place is a must everytime we are in the city. There is a terrible wait that is well worth it! The burgers will leave you craving more for weeks and the Monsoon, well all I can say is you only need one and it is delish! Pros: Great Food Cons: Looooong wait and no benches to rest your weary feet more

tasty burgers and baked potato 4/25/2007

Good place for a date. May have to wait 15-20 minutes or pull up to the bar. Burgers have gotten smaller but they still are filling alongside salad or potato, but don't look for french fries. Enough juice w/ burgers to compensate for greasy fries. Pros: Good tasty food. Ambiance. Cons: No parking. Sometimes smokey more

With a menu this small it had better be good 2/17/2007

Port of Call has what I would consider to be the best burgers anywhere. The menu has only about 8 items, but they stick to what they know best--burgers and steaks. I always make a point to stop by at least once when I am in N.O. The interior is cramped and the wait can be long, but there is always a great cross-section of people to watch. Even the baked potatoes are great...I know they are hard to mess up, but Port of Call's just seem better. Pros: amazing burgers Cons: ambience, wait time more

UNSANITARY---AVOID 1/28/2007

I attempted to eat here 2 months ago and when my plate was placed in front of me a Cucaracha crawled out of my salad onto the table. I know we have our fair share of creepy crawlers down here, but c'mon I don't think anyone wants foreign animals in their food. The waitress didn't seem phased at all. The conditions are unsanitary and the long wait is not worth it. I've been here twice before, but never again. The only thing worth mentioning here are the drinks- monsoon, goombay, huma huma, but I suggest you get a burger someplace else. Pros: Drinks, Prices Cons: Unsanitary more

Great Big Juicy Burgers 8/15/2006

Even if you have to wait outside in the rain, do it. The burger's worth it. They have a whole menu, but I find it hard to believe anyone ever gets anything but hamburgers. more

The best of the best 8/2/2006

There's nothing else I can say that hasn't already been said here. I can just testify that it is the best burger you will ever eat! Period. Wash it down with a Monsoon and you will have had the Port of Call experience. People tell me that the pizzas and steaks are absolutely fabulous and I've seen them and they look great, but I go for the burger! more

Best mushroom burger anywhere! 7/23/2006

My husband used to tell me about this great place in NOLA that had the best burgers in the world. I was thinking ""it's a burger, give me a break."" That was until I actually ate there and now I now what he means. I now tell everyone who plans to visit NOLA that they must go to Port of Call for the best burger that they will ever eat. Be sure to have a monsoon while you're there, too (much better than those nasty hurricanes you get on Bourbon St)! I have found that the best time to go (if you want to avoid a wait) is for an early Saturday lunch. But, you can always sit on Esplanade and watch the people going to and from the dog park around the corner if you have to wait. If there is a wait, it is well worth it! Pros: Great Food! Cons: Wait for tables. more

Watch out for the monsoons! 5/3/2006

The monsoons, like NOLA's other killer drinks (hand grenades, hurricanes), will sneak up on you! If you're a lightweight drinker, be warned, one of these is all you need. Who knows what's in it, and who cares? It does the job and it tastes great, and is well worth the $8. The baked potatoes are out of this world! Always a wait for a table but great service. Gets crowded late, with a mix of old and young. small space and it gets smoky in there fast. Womens room is teeny, one person can barely move in there. The neighborhood is cool (on edge of french quarter, near frenchmen st.) but parking is IMPOSSIBLE, unless you're willing to circle around Esplanade Ave for 20 min. While you're in the neighborhood, walk toward the Marigny down Royal St and check out another great bar, the R Bar, a few blocks down. Pros: great location, monsoons rule, baked potato Cons: no parking, very crowded, limited menu more

Bangin' Burgers and Baked Potatoes 2/1/2006

We went to this place a few years ago and it is still on my mind. One of those legendary haunts that when you are in town, you MUST venture to. We sat at the bar, drank monsoons and ate ourselves into oblivion... one of the best meals Ive ever had, burp. Pros: food, food , food Cons: can get crowded more
