J and R been around for ever! 12/18/2011

I remember coming here when my father bought his first laser disk player in the 80's! And even today, when i walk in it is still a bit overwhelming to see the selection and the ginormous store that is on a street in downtown. They have a hell of a selection and are usually fully stocked. The sales people can be a bit pushy at times, but i guess that is the nature of sales. more

J&R won't accept return of defective goods, has poor CS 11/10/2011

Bought a Trendnet USB network server from J&R, installed it per manufacturers instructions and it didn't work. Spent several hours, over the course of a month, with Trendnet customer service, downloading USB server software upgrades, checking firewalls... still didn't work, Finally replaced it with a Silex USB server which worked right out of the box and has no problems. Here's the rub. J&R refuses to give a refund because I had the Trendnet unit for over a month, trying to get it to work. I would not buy from J&R again. Their customer service is arrogant and unresponsive. They don't care if your equipment works, they just want your money! more

If you want it, they got it! 6/2/2011

This place is huge! The set-up is unique with its multiple entrances and different stores and for some a bit confusing or exhausting but for me it works just fine. Us New Yorkers are lucky to have such a huge electronic store in our city considering rent prices and all. On my last trip I was looking for a small camcorder to shoot video with. I wanted something small that could fit in my pocket but at the same time I didn?t want to have to sacrifice quality for size. The gentleman at the counter immediately suggested the Flip Video Camera. He explained how it is super easy to work with if you want to shoot, upload and share with friends on the Internet. He sold me when he used the word ?simple?. Once I said I was interested he took out a few different models and helped me pick the one that was best for me. I went with the Flip Mino HD and I love it to death. The folks at J & R really know their stuff when it comes to electronics. I suggest you visit them if you are looking for anything ranging from a dryer to a new iPod. This place has it all. more

Don't Expect To Leave With Nothing! 5/20/2011

There are definitely more pros than cons to this interesting layout of a store. Obviously a con is the way it?s set up. Going in and out of one store to another can be exhausting and confusing. It can actually be a pro too if you just have to go to one place and you know exactly where to get it from. On top of that, I find the selection they have on many different items to be enormous. The people in each department really seem to know their department well and their prices are very reasonable. Whenever I?m in this area I find myself stopping by and half the time I have no reason to go in there but somehow end up with something. This store could be dangerous to some degree. Last time I stopped in just to kill some time, yet I ended up buying a handful of DVDS. Not only that, you could also have a lot of fun trying out instruments and many other products. They also have tons of music you could buy, including vinyl. Everything seems to be inexpensive compared to other huge stores. Whether you are in this area or not this is one store you should definitely check out. The people will help you, they have a vast amount of merchandise, and their prices are practical. There are way too many pros that won?t stop me from coming back to this place. more

Every Techy's favorite place to shop 5/9/2011

If you?re looking for variety in apparel you go to a department store. If you?re looking for variety in selection on designer brands that can?t be found anywhere else you go to an outlet. If you?re searching for the best deal on any electronic item from DVD players to laptops you go to J&R Music World. My favorite retail location for J&R Music World is the one located in the Financial District because its one of the largest in New York. From the moment that you walk in you are visually overwhelmed by the massive amount of inventory and can?t decided where to go first. Shortly afterward you are greeted by an associate who directs you to the item you are looking for at prices that are hard to match. I?ve even had friends who stated that on several accounts they had simply walked in to pick up a few DVD?s releases or CD?s and walked out after purchasing a new camera or laptop. For any techy entering a store like J&R is like being a kid again and walking in to a first rate candy store! I rate J&R Music World as the one stop destination for top electronics at unbeatable prices and encourage you to indulge. more

ZERO customer service, ZERO warranty 2/9/2011

Sorry for screaming, BUT WILL NEVER SHOP THERE AGAIN. Bought a Kindle two weeks ago, and had screen problems within a week. They claim the device was damaged- NO KIDDING; that's why I brought it back. There was NO damage to the screen-they kept claiming it was the screen. The screen is intact. The damage is below the screen, the fonts or the ink are all white or cracked and illegible. I'm in market for a wireless printer and a new laptop; no way will I buy it at JR even though I work one block away. My main reason for not going back is no one in store even cared that I had a defective device-they all seemed programmed with same, standard answer-"" it's damaged, we can't send it back like that""... 3-4 different people said same thing. Sorry for rant, but I'm so angry over a lousy purchase/lousy customer service.... more

Expectations 5/9/2010

A sales person used to be knowledgeable and helpful. You would learn their name and return to the store the next time you needed something. However, corporations have changed that by paying staff people less and not expecting them to know about the products they are selling. By doing so, they have enriched themselves and left the consumer to learn about the features of the various products. This is what you will find at J&R where the sales staff is solely interested in the sale with very little knowledge or background about what they are selling. The product I bought was fine and I guess the price reflects the lack of service. If you know what you want and are willing to do the research, fine. If you want help, then you'll need to go elsewhere. Pros: Price Cons: Sales Staff is not knowledgeable more

Worst service ever!!! 3/26/2010

Here are two separate reasons not to shop or purchase from this store. Reason one, the staff is ridiculously lazy. After the staff watched me read over the options for a variety printers for a half hour i decided to go with one that looked best for my budget and needs. Once i was able to get the nearest staff member of his cell from texting the inventory search began for the printer i wanted. After a few calls and a look through the computer it was explained to me by the J&R staff member that there wasn't anymore of these particular printers available at this store location. Due to the fact that i needed to start printing asap i went with the next best thing, a printer $40 higher in price to save time. After i purchase the printer and waited for the inventory staff to bring down my new printer i started browsing the store again to kill some time. As i browsed i came across 5 of the original printers i wanted at a lower price sitting on the floor next to the staff member on his cell phone. After i pointed this out to him he gave me the original printer i wanted and i was told i would have to go down stairs wait in line and return the printer i just purchased. The reason i had to do this was because i used debt card rather then cash. After waiting down stairs for another half to get my refund i came back up stairs and purchased the original printer i wanted. The entire process only took 2 F$#KING HOURS out of my life. The second reason would be the return process. I know the last story had some return process issues but this one really infuriated me. I guess i didn't learn my lesson the first time but now after today i know to never go to this place again and anyone i know that's headed there will be warned by me. Today i rushed in to pick up some quick software i needed asap. When i walked into the department i told the staff i needed Photoshop Elements for a PC. The staff member handed the box to me and said this is it. I walked over to the cashier and was out in 15min. Great, right? Wrong, once i opened the box and place the CD in my computer it wouldn't work. I started reading the directions. Then i found it, FOR MAC USE ONLY. Well i should have looked and the staff member made a mistake, no big deal i""ll just go back and switch it for the PC software. So, i ran back to the store on my way to my office and figured it would take me 15-20min to get this taken care of, Wrong! I get there and i explained to the staff member that helped me what happened. She pointed me to her manager who said i need to go down stair and return the software and then come back up and repurchase. This is the most idiotic thing I've ever seen in my life. As i get down stairs i see 10 people waiting, i don't have time so i left and come back after i get off work. Once i arrive to the store after work i went down stairs waited in line for 30min and then was told i can not return the software due to the fact that it was opened. I asked for a manager, after explaining the situation to the manager he finally agreed to give me store credit. After that hour long saga i raced back up stairs only to find i couldn't purchase the software i need because the store was closing even though it was 10min before closing time on my clock. To make a long store short this place is horrible with a horrible staff. Don't ever ever purchase from this store....You've been warned! Pros: Loads of options but who cares if no one will help you! Cons: Lazy Staff, idiotic return process. more

one stop shopping downtown 12/13/2009

I'm not a fan of Best Buy or PC Richards (bad past experiences), so whenever I need something tech/electronics related, I head to J&R. The place is huuuuuuge and you can pretty much find whatever you need there. I bought my HDTV from j&r last year and it was $200 cheaper than BB or Circuit City (which was still open back then). Definitely a good find. Pros: can find pretty much anything Cons: separate store fronts for departments more

Very good experience -- trouble-free 7/1/2007

After our horrible experience at Best Buy (see my review for the one on Broadway), we went to J and R. We were out of there in 10 minutes with our plasma TV. Our salesman was knowledgeable, no-nonsense and efficient. He did not try to swindle us like Best Buy did.\r \r Highly recommended. We will from now on get all our electronic purchases there. Pros: Customer service, selection more

good prices 10/24/2006

Great place to go check out very very up to date electronic gadgets. They have fair prices and can compete with online retailers. I don't like the separate store set up but I guess it works. The staff is in need of major psychoanalytic therapy. Pros: NYC specific Cons: Staff is creepy, untrustable more

Knowledge goes a long way. 7/9/2006

It's good to see that people really know their stuff when it comes to personal computing. The prices are competitive and the people are freindly. more

Heaven 1/24/2003

This place is heaven for electronics, music and movie heads. A little confusing at first, but well worth the time you spend getting used to it. more

Where to buy electronics 1/10/2003

This is the place to buy DVD players or stereos. The salespeople are very knowledgeable, though sometimes difficult to get a hold of. JandR always has the best prices on electronics. The selection of DVDs in the basement isn't the best in the city, nor are the prices, but for equipment, this is the place to shop. Pros: Prices Cons: Crowded, Hectic more

Best record/CD store!! 12/3/2002

This is easily, my favorite CD/record store. I have found recordings just lying around in the classical bins which are ordinarily only obtainable through import houses and special order. The ambience is not the greatest, but when the classical section was in an upstairs section of a separate location (no longer) I once saw the Mayor of the City of New York (yes, Rudy Giuliani) looking through the CD bins; but for his NYC police detective bodyguard, he was alone. Quite a place! Pros: great selection, easy to find CDS, varied prices Cons: poor ambience more

One-stop entertainment shopping mecca! 11/14/2002

If you need computers, CDs, DVDs, electronics or a myriad of other products, J&R is the place to go! Their selection is excellent and they have frequent sales. Plus, you can have the warm and fuzzy feeling that comes by supporting an indie over a big corporate box store. If you need to be coddled through a purchase, J&R might not be your scene. However, it's very much worth it. Pros: independant retailer, huge selection, good sales Cons: crowded, erratic sales help more

Home away from home 7/23/2002

When shopping at J&R, I almost feel that I am home. I know where everything is and their cutomer service people are always so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. more

8.5 7/3/2002

J&R has very reasonable prices and a great variety of products. Sometimes the sales associates can be a little direct, but overall, it is a pleasant experience if you are into electronics. more
