I'M A REGULAR 4/27/2004

Yes, there is a scene one typically walks into. Yes, the dining room is beautiful. Yes, the drinks are out of this world. I am a regular and eat at this restaurant at least once a week and yes, the food is delicious. I wish there were more restaurants like this one in our city. If you want corporate, boring food and atmosphere like every other restaurant popping up around town, keep surfing. This is place is a leap beyond what you will find anywhere in Portland. Pros: CAFE, FORMAL DINING, PRO STAFF more

Drinks only please 4/24/2004

Portlanders love to eat, and eat well. And this city offers plenty of places to delight our palettes to no end, however, Bluehour is not one of these. Yes, the atmosphere is comfortable and hip; it is THE place in the Pearl to see and be seen. And their seasonal drinks are out of this world, but not their dinner menu. Even though the waiting staff and crowd is buzzing the kitchen is most definately not. The food is ridiculously overpriced, especially in relation to its lack of quality; the pathetic portions are so foo-foo, only a poodle would be satisfied. So don't waste your wallet on a meal there. I suggest, instead, hitting a place like Oba or Andinas just up the street, where they specialize in the art of culinary cooking, then you might head down to Bluehour for fabulous drinks and people watching. Pros: good drinks, good atmosphere more

BEST in the Pearl! 3/12/2004

Having recently relocated to the Pearl from California, and leaving our very familiar and favorite haunts behind. We can honestly say that we feel as though we have been ""adopted"" by everyone at BLUE HOUR. The staff is GREAT! The food is beyond!! The crowd decadent!!! GO and enjoy! WE WILL BE! Pros: Peter, Kenny, Bruce Cons: , ATMOSPHERE more

Leave Portland for a Night 9/8/2003

This place is so great, you forget you're in Portland! I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a good place to take a date, the folks, or anyone else looking for a good time. Bar staff is wonderful, waitresses are very nice, and everyone is dressed rather easily on the eye. What are you waiting for? Get a res! Pros: atmosphere, drinks, crowd Cons: expensive more

Overpriced 9/8/2003

I was sadly disappointed in the food quality and price. Scene queens will greatly appreciate the atmosphere. Pros: scene Cons: price more

Wannabe Fooled? 7/14/2003

Darn. How Dissappointing. The food is unfortunately highly inconsistant, as if the cooks one night differ significantly in skill or commitment from the next. On top of this, it is a - well - a ""wanna be"" place. The atmosphere says swank sophistication, but the crowd is only dressed up that way, including much (not all) of the staff. Same thing goes for the food. If you are not a gourmet or a food expert, it's easy to fall into the sales pitch and peer pressure that the food ""must be"" great if it's expensive and so many well dressed people are here. Well -- it's just not that great. Food is just normal restaurant food arranged on the plate nicely. There is value to a ""hip"" atmosphere when you are in the mood, but how much are you willing to pay for it? Pros: Sometimes good food, Hip Atmosphere Cons: Wannabe Cool Servers, Wannabe Crowd, Inconsistent Food!!!! more

Back Again 6/30/2003

We always seem to drift back again to Blue Hour after tasting around the Pearl. Beside dependably good food and service it's entertaining to people watch. Pros: Food, Service, nicely crowded more

Just Like Home 6/27/2003

Our experience was wonderful. We are from the San Francisco Bay Area and had heard about Bluehour from some friends. Our experience at Bluehour, ranks as good, or better, as the very fine resturants we have in ""the city"" - San Francisco. The food was excellent and the service was exceptional. I didn't know Portland had this level of sophistication...can't wait for our next visit and our next great find. Pros: Scallops w/ bacon, Ribeye steak, Martini choices Cons: waited 20 minutes more

Not impressed 6/18/2003

The first thing I noticed about Bluehour was the thick ambiance of insecure people trying too hard be cool (customers and wait staff alike). Im sorry, but it in my opinion, Bluehour is dull. Oh, and the food is just as dull. Pros: OK bar Cons: Everything else more

Feeling Blue 6/5/2003

Started off good in the bar, crowded with people dressed up for a night out. We were seated about 30 minutes after our reservation time. Then when I asked for my fish without the Buerre Blanc the waitress rudely said ""What's your problem with butter!?""...quite off-putting. She was unfriendly and unhelpful and left us with very negative feelings about the infamous Blue Hour! Pros: Atmosphere, Bar, Food Cons: Limited Menu, Waitress more

Don't get sucked in by the ambience 6/4/2003

I want to like Bluehour. Really. It's a swank place with great ambience. If only the service weren't so unacceptable, so appalling. I always waited at least 45 minutes AFTER the time for which my party had made reservations to be seated, and cinsistently received inattentive, even rude, service. If only the food were consistent (the scallops made me go back the second time, but were tough and lacked flavor the second visit) If only the waiters weren't so pretentious and unknowledgeable. Stick with the bar here--that has been safe. Great drinks. But dining here has been utterly unpleasant. Pros: good bar, cool interiors Cons: poor service, inconsistent food more

Consistant quality 5/15/2003

The one thing I can say about Bluehour is that it is the best restaurant in Portland. Because I'm a lousy cook, I tend to eat out for every meal. Bluehour is always the place I go when I want top notch food in an always hip environment. The quality is always consistent, and the service is friendly. Bruce and Joe have done a wonderful job. Keep up the good work. I've been coming for years and plan on returning for years to come. Pros: great food and servic, great patrons(usually, great drinks Cons: A tad bit loud, prom crowd ;) more

Nice Evening 5/15/2003

I rated Bluehour an overall 7. The food was excellent. However very small portions. The wait staff was excellent! When it became busy around 7:00pm we were somewhat ""forgotten"". The valet was shabbily dressed and some staff and friends hung out at the tables near the entrance smoking and tending to a poodle all of which could be viewed by those dining inside... this did not add to the overall ambiance. The bathrooms were beautiful. Pros: Free Valet Service, Friendly Wait Staff, Ambiance Cons: Expensive, Small Portions more

Not Worth the $$$$ 5/7/2003

Went last night with a group of five (on a corporate expense account) and got just about everything on the menu. None of it was worth the inflated prices. Even though I wasn't paying, I was disappointed in the relatively simple and somewhat dull flavors. My cod tasted like it had salt and olive oil on it, nothing else. And the $12 risotto tasted like Spaghetti-O's. One member of our party said, ""the duck must have been from Trader Joe's."" The highlights were the vegetarian flan (both in flavor and presentation) and the desserts. But I'd go to Pambiche if I really wanted good dessert. I don't think I'll ever go back to Bluehour. Pros: atmosphere, location, service Cons: price/value, ordinary food, tiny portions more

Fantastic! 3/27/2003

Bluehour continues to be one of my favorite spots to dine in the Pearl District. I was recently there with 5 friends, we were treated wonderfully and had a great time. Everyone must try their delicious new fondue appetizer! more

what happened? 3/17/2003

The Bluehour has definitely past it's prime. What was once hip, exciting and energetic has now slumped into boring, typical and far from cutting-edge. Servers who used to be in abundance are now run ragged, and the usual staff seems to have dissappered. Food isn't inventive anymore. Desserts used to be sensational, what happened? The drinks and bar scene are the only thing still buzzing. Pros: bar, drinks, booze more

Minimalist Chic 3/17/2003

Bluehour is a chic place to meet stylish, mature friends for great drinks, without having to deal with a UO reunion of girls in ""trendy"" clothes/haircuts from 2 summers ago, (aka: Lush). Pros: Great drinks, Good service, Chic decor Cons: Pricey, parking more

Stunning design and a great time 3/2/2003

What to say about Bluehour? It is the least pretentious ""pretentious"" place in Portland. The staff is professional and friendly and the bar area is inviting and somewhat casual. The price is what surprises me the most. You can get a variety of items for around $10 that are very satisfying, try the gnocchi and the scallops. Their cocktails are $6-7 and worth every penny, fresh juices and a premium well. The energy and clientele are what make it a great place. Watch out for the lines to the bathroom and the listen for the music that sets the tempo for the night. Smoking outside only, a huge plus. Pros: Ambience, Music, People Cons: Sometimes Crowded, Sometimes Loud more

blue hour 2/25/2003

the restaurant is fabulous, it is a great romantic setting...the service is wonderful and the food is extraordinary...great wine list... bon appetite.... more

Love the Bluehour 2/20/2003

My girlfriend & I love Bluehour. Things stared out potentially bad, but just showed how the dedication of the staff can turn things into a positive. We arrived right on time for reservations and were told things were running behind a few minutes. Over the next 30 minutes the two hostesses checked on us no less than 4 times, offered us free appetizers and sincere apologies. We weren't in a rush and were enjoying the bar, so it just really gave us a great impression of the place. We then were sat at the best table in the house and the waiter was extremely attentive to our needs. wE loved the salmon and my girlfriend & red snapper. Topped of with a delicious red wine and followed with sorbet to end the night. Incredible. I have never paid so little for such and incredible meal and impeccable service. Well done! more
