Terrible service - disappointing night out 3/4/2011

Just left Silver Sake SO disappointed. \r \r First, my husband and I have been customers for 4-5 years and generally get take-out, although we go in occasionally. Tonight we were able to get sitter and go out. We were very excited when we got there and were greeted appropriately.\r \r However, the service was terrible and I left wishing we had spent our night out somewhere else. It appears that although we probably spend about $600+ there a year, we are not ""VIP"" enough to rate any attention if there are more important customers there (which there clearly were tonight). \r \r Although they seemed to recognize us and greeted us when we came in, we basically had to beg for any type of service after. I asked for water twice, and then they only brought for me and not my husband. My husband sat for at least 15 minutes having finished the beer and sake we ordered and no one remotely cared or even glanced in our general direction (despite our placement right next to the register and kichen). I finally poured half my water in his empty beer glass. \r \r We were there 1 1/2 hours and had to get 2 rolls to go because everything took so long. We got 3 appetizers to our table in the first hour+ and had to assault our ""waiter"" to order more. With 15 minutes before we had to leave we asked if our salmon nigiri was ready and it had not even been ordered. Then, the rolls that were to-go came for dine-in. \r \r Although the food was good, I felt so mistreated when I left it didn't matter. Apparently, unless you are favorite at the bar, plying everyone with sake, you are treated like less-than. And we've actually done that several times but there was no seating at the bar tonight. Yet, the shots, food, and drinks kept pouring out to several people at the bar during the course of our ""dinner"" while we were basically invisible the whole night.\r \r Overall, I left feeling unappreciated and ignored. And a little angry. Although the food is good enough for take-out, I won't go back for dine-in. It totally ruined my rare night out. And, my husband always overtips for take-out in my opinion. That is most certainly over. The theory was that if we tip well we'd be treated well. Ha. Clearly of no consequence. Nor were the free girl scout cookies I brought tonight for the Silver Sake folks. I think the reception was ""I don't even like Thin Mints."" Oh. Well F you. I""ll be sure to remember that next year. Sorry to try to do something nice. Wish I could have taken them back before I left. \r \r Next time I'll drive downtown to Zen Sushi. They're better anyway, it would probably be faster, and I know I'll get good service. Lesson learned. \r \r And p.s., don't be fooled by the delivery ad. They have never agreed to deliver, depite our close proximity, and have either been ""too busy"" or not had a delivery person for years now. I have asked for delivery and been denied at least 5 times. more

Only Sushi I eat 4/19/2010

Even before becoming a regular, I never felt alienated by the warm ""cheers-esque"" vibe of this local Sushi Spot. Highly desired if you're tired of ""designer sushi"" and just want good authentic and fresh food with a touch of imagination if requested. I recommend paying the extra buck for the Habanero Tobiko. You can relax have a nice converstaion with a stranger at the sushi bar, or, sit back and grub at one of the tables. Either way hands down, the best of both worlds. Pros: friendliest customers and staff Cons: occasionally understaffed and patience is required more

Bad experience from start to finsih 3/9/2010

Uggh, where to begin? First their website says ""free delivery min $15.00 order"". I call in and the guy says min $45 and they have to call the guy to see if he's available. Fine, I can understand if you don't get delivery orders often you may not keep him there all the time. He's available but then the guy rings up my order and says its $33.00. Ok, so I'll go pick it up. I pick it up and my order has magically increased to $48.00 which would have been good for delivery. I was ticked about this but it would STILL have been worth it to me if it was at least pretty good sushi. Needless to say it was NOT. The food was bland. The sauces were watery. The rolls looked like they had been rolled by a novice and only one of the kinds I got had even decent flavor. I mean no disrespect to any of the other reviewers but to say this is the best sushi anywhere is unfathomable to me. This whole experience was lame from the beginning to the end starting with the first phone call until I got it home and ate it. I NEVER write reviews but I registered on this website and the Yelp website just to write this review because it was such a bad experience. more

World's Worst Sushi 8/2/2008

My wife and I are lovers of fine sushi and we frequently try new\r places. We lived in Tokyo for many years where there are excellent\r sushi bars everywhere. Here in the U.S. there are also many sushi\r bars, but very few of them are excellent. Our personal categories\r are: (1) Outstanding (2) Good (3) OK if you're starving and don't\r know any better and (4) Garbage and Disgusting.\r \r Our Outstanding rating goes to a place where the sushi chef has\r been extensively trained for many years in Japan, who knows when\r and where the fish was caught, what was the depth and temperature\r of the water where the fish lived, what are the tastiest parts of\r the fish, has a keen sense of the quality of the fish and so forth.\r \r Outstanding sushi bars are extremely rare. There is one in San\r Diego, one in New Jersey and we found one in San Francisco. Good\r and OK-if-you're-starving sushi bars are plentiful. We live in Reno\r where most of the sushi bars are in the OK-if-you're-starving\r category.\r \r We tried Silver Sake recently. At an unfamiliar place, we always\r start with hamachi (yellow tail) as a guide to what the other fish\r will be like. The sushi maker (I won't call him a chef) obviously had\r no training and had no concept of what sushi is all about. He served\r fish that any self-respecting sushi chef would throw out. Not only\r was the fish disgusting, but the restaurant itself was dirty. We\r were there for lunch just about a half-hour after it opened. Nobody\r had apparently cleaned up from the night before. The little hallway\r leading to the restroom was filthy and the restroom itself was awful.\r \r Silver Sake is firmly in our Garbage-and-Disgusting category.\r more

I love requestings off the menu rolls 7/14/2008

I like telling the server that I just want something spicy with shrimp and Albacore. When he comes back the chefs there always create some pretty amazing rolls. They have yet to be ever exactly the same but thats what I love about it, each chef puts his flair onto the custom roll. Its a pretty relaxed enviroment which is cool, not your typical sushi place but you just feel like your at a friends house cuz the staff just makes you feel that comfortable. This place is like the Japanese Sushi equivalent of the best hole in the wall mexican food joint. Once you discover it you'll become addicted, great fresh fish with wonderful flavor combinations....I'm in love! Pros: Great Service and just a kicked back chill place Cons: Its not closer to my appartment more

Great find! 6/19/2007

This hole-in-the-wall sushi joint is now one of my favorites in Sacramento. I admit that I was skeptical at first because of its somewhat strange location but after trying it, all I can say is that I have been missing out! This place is very casual. The servers were very friendly and personable. They gave excellent recommendations. Not only that but the fish was very fresh and the miso soup was the best that I have ever had. I will definitely be going back many times in the future! Pros: Great sushi, excellent service, lots of parking Cons: Strange location more

great neighborhood sushi joint! 1/27/2007

What a find! We spent about two hours at Silver Sake stuffing ourselves and it seemed like the Japanese-restaurant version of ""Friends"". The owners are two youngish brothers that knew most of their customers personally. They were very attentive (if not a little scattered), were super personable and made excellent recommendations. The sushi was great - had a number of inventive rolls and tempura - all were delicious. \r \r This is a very unpretentious place (they have photographs of their patrons plastered all over the walls and a tv on in the corner of the restaurant) so if you're looking for the chi-chi sushi scene, it's probably not for you. It's located in a slightly run down strip mall and it's not the type of place I would have just 'dropped in'. BUT! We went because of the high ratings it received here. If you're looking for a inexpensive place with a 'neighborhood feel' and great food - this is it! Pros: friendly service, unpretentious, inexpensive, delicious food Cons: located in a strip mall more

Home Town Sushi 8/8/2006

I have eaten at many sushi resteraunts in and out of sacramento in my lifetime. When I first walked into silver sake I found it to be a relaxing and new experiance. The attitude and ambiance of the resteraunt and the staff is refreshing and relaxing. The food is great, the people are great, and the experiance is better. I have been going back to Silver Sake for a few months now, and will continue to make it my favorite and only sushi resteraunt. Pros: Good Ambiance, Great food, Great people Cons: an occasional wait on the busiest of nights more

Food is great. 6/18/2006

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the tempura and a fried pork, rice and egg dish I had, I will only go back for take-out. Rice was not sticky enough. Not very clean, young American waiter, was brusk, and didn't check to see if everything was OK until I as almost finished. When he returned my change he just threw it down on the table. Loud rap music. No ambience at all. Another reviewer said it was at El Camino and Marconi, which don't cross. It's at Marconi and Walnut.\r \r \r \r Pros: Good food, inexpensive. Cons: Not very clean, loud rap music, fast but sloppy serivce. more

Simply, the best. 3/3/2006

I have been going to Silver Sake for about 3 years now and it remains in only place I choose to eat sushi at. Mikuni and all those other trendy, over-priced places can not even hold a candle to Silver Sake. While seating is limited and the facility itself is very small, you will not find a better roll or better company in town. Keep it up boys!!! Pros: Food, Ambience, Price more

Best Sushi in California! 2/6/2006

This is the greatest sushi restaurant in the world. Camon and Roger are the sushi chefs and they know sushi! The rolls are outstanding and they will make you anything. Just say ""spicy"", no ""crab, etc."", anything and you will have a scrumptious piece of artwork to devour! The sashimi is always fresh and exquisitely presented. Non sushi items such as the bento boxes are all-time favorites especially for the sushi-fearful. One of the best rolls to get would be the Chris Roll, Monkey Roll, or Sac State roll (beginners favorite). Head over there now! Pros: Inexpensive, Friendly atmosphere, Freakin Delicious! more

friendly d00dz 12/13/2005

not just the staff, but the other customers made me feel right at home. i got the sashimi plate for $12-something and it was excellent. free refills of green tea (expected at all sushi places, but expectations not always fulfilled). if you ever visit sacramento, get your butt over to the silver sake and pig out. Pros: fast, friendly, good food Cons: small more

Rolls 1/2/2005

They have a huge variety of rolls. The food is great. The service is very friendly, and a lot of fun. Pros: Great Food more

Fresh 4/21/2004

Silver Sake is a neighborhood restaurant located at Marconi and El Camino in Carmichael and is worth the drive. It has a Cheers like feeling, if you been there more than twice, they probably know your name. If youre into sushi you'll appreciate the large sushi roll menu and the sushi chef's flexibility. He'll make whatever you ask for if he has the ingredients. The menu of non-sushi items is extensive and there are always fresh specials on the whiteboard. The ambiance is welcoming and open and the staff is very friendly. Pros: Very fresh sushi!, Friendly staff, Good size portions more
