Really Odd Experience 6/9/2007

We recently had dinner at Plainfields and had a really odd experience. Being greeted at the door is always a pleasure, but I don't need for the owner to tell me she owns the place. It made my friend and I feel really weird. She struggled opening a bottle of wine for us, which was again odd. Wouldn't you think an owner can provide proper service? The food was really good--- we had a veggie and vegan dish. However, I would rather just get something to-go than having to deal with this lady again. Pros: Nice location. Cons: Pushy, Incompetent service from the owner? more

Amazing Lamb and Lobster Dishes! 6/9/2007

Wow! I can't believe I've lived in portland for so long and only stumbled onto this treasure recently! I'd never even heard of it. I mean why is it called Plainfields? That doesn't sound Indian at all! So anyways, my receptionist had recently tried it out and was raving about it saying that i HAD to try it out. I'm not huge on Indian food. But she got me intrigued about it so I decided to take my wife there for our scheduled keep your sanity and get away from the kids night. \r Bear in mind, I lean towards steaks and lobster, this place blew me away! The food came in the middle so my wife and i shared. we had this amazing appetizer i cant remember the name of most of these dishes but the sauce was green and it was amazing! ive never tasted such an orchestra of flavors! then i ordered a lamb steak dish that was cooked to a medium rare perfection and my wife ordered the lobster. we were blown away by the flavors! we're meat and potatoes people typically but we got tired of the ringside and portland city grill it was time for new food adventures. \r well i can honestly say, we're addicted to plainfields and have reservations for next week! \r of course, there were some less than perfect stuff. our server was the owner herself. she was very sweet, gracious, and lovely but clearly lacking in experience. she had trouble with the wine key. it was kind of cute and we felt for her she was trying hard. it took 3 tries before we found a bottle of wine on the menu that was in stock! but that being said, it was a delicious cabernet from India and thats pretty petty stuff. We're not snobs.\r I'm not complaining so much. I'm just giving an honest review. Nothing's perfect. But my wife and I concur: This place is a treasured find! You HAVE to try it to believe it! The petty stuff was extremely minimal to our outstanding night at the restaurant. very romantic. get a babysitter though. Pros: Amazing food, wine, obvious staff cared about you Cons: owner struggled with wine key, wines out of stock more

Na-an was oily and cold; veg dish so so, not the best. 5/1/2007

Nice location, but the veg dishes were so-so. I arrived early so maybe the place wasn't rolling yet. Pros: has potiental Cons: cold naan more

Oustanding food and service! THANKS PLAINFIELDS! 4/30/2007

GREAT experience! I had the pleasure of coming in for dinner this past Sunday and have an outstanding time. My server was knew the menu very well, recommending outstanding dishes for me and my friend to try. We are new to the area, and he helped us out by recommending other places with various cuisines around the city. And actually, this was my first time eating Indian food, so I really had no idea what I was getting into. The food was just fabulous! Service top notch! Thanks Plainfields! I will be back!!! more

HORRIBLE service. 4/23/2007

The food was great. . the wait for the food was ridiculously long (it took over an hour to bring the food ).. .and the service was horrible. The server messed up our order. . and I had to ask other servers to fill my water.. and once I even had to get up to get us water. And to top it all, in the end the server was extremely rude to us. He practically threw the check at our table! and when we commented on the bad service.. he came to argue with us.. and walked off when i was still talking with him!! For a restaurant that charges over 18/20 dollars a plate.. I expected at least average service. . . I?m never going back there again.. and I certainly do not recommend it to anyone. Pros: food is great Cons: service is horrible.. more

Great food, nice ambience! 4/9/2007

After reading the reviews below, I thought I'd try out the place. I have to say having eaten Indian food many times, I've never really had quite a delectable meal until I came here. If you've never tried Indian food, or even if you have, I highly suggest coming here. The food is amazing, the prices are reasonable, and the waitstaff are VERY helpful. The owner is friendly and I WILL be coming back. Thanks for the wonderful food and the excellent service! What a breath of fresh air! Pros: Excellent ambience for any occasion! Cons: None. more

Great food and service 4/8/2007

We were new in town and invited to this restaurant by friends of ours. Being from the east coast we were accustomed to fine food and were pleasantly surprised with the excellent food and service. The atmosphere was pleasant; the waiter very cordial, knowledgeable, and attentive. Our glasses were always full. The wine was exceptional. The decors were visually stunning. Pros: Everything more

Great Improvements! Outstanding Experience!!!!! 4/8/2007

We just ate at Plainfield's twice over the last month, both experiences were top notch, likely the best two experiences I've had over nine years of frequenting Plainfield?s. I was introduced to Plainfield's when I first moved to Portland and read a review. The review was correct: great food and wine! The first time my family visited I brought them as well, it has since become a required visit each time they travel here, a welcome requirement (I eat there about once a month on average). Pros: Food, service, wine, staff, really everything. Cons: Very young children may not have the patience for this style of dining. more

Service & Food were Great! 4/8/2007

The food, atmosphere and service at Plainfield?s is great! It has been a few months since our previous visit and we were curious with a new owner how it would affect our experience. We were greeted by a friendly new face and it they the same welcome home attitude and feel that Plainfield?s always had for us. The food and wine is exceptional. We ate a familial favorite, tried a new addition to the menu, and the exceptional wine list is still there. The atmosphere has remained elegant and relaxing; a real treat. It is exciting to see the direction this loved and frequent stop for us is going. If possible to comprehend, Plainfield?s is better for the changes. The new staff is great. They greet us promptly, friendly, professionally, frequently, knowledgably and they?re attractive. We will continue to frequent Plainfield often! Pros: Everything! Cons: Nothing. more

Quality of the service has gone downhill! 4/7/2007

Oh, dear. Something has definitely gone wrong at Plainfield's. For years, this has been my favorite ""special occasion"" restaurant, but no longer. Pros: The food is still good. Cons: The service isn't. more

A+ Food, A+ Service.......a wonderful experience 4/1/2007

After hearing about Plainfield?s from a work friend, my husband and I decided to put this restaurant on our ?must-do? list .. and we are so glad that we did! Pros: VERY good food, Great service, parking lot Cons: - more

Not the Plainfields that I loved anymore 4/1/2007

wow! could it be any farther from the place I have known and loved for nearly a decade. No more great wines, the servers I loved are gone, what happened to the ports and maderas? I am so confused by what is still called plainfields mayur. the food still tastes great but that is only a part of the whole experience. I always counted on Craig or Nita to take excellent care of me. where are they? Some thing has gone terrilby wrong. Will it ever be the same. I felt like i was in a high priced diner. I am so sad. more

What happened to my Plainfields?? 3/23/2007

This makes me so sad. The last dinner we had at Plainfield's Mayur was a disaster. We've been going there since 2001, although not within the past few months. We were there to celebrate an important birthday, chosen specifically by the birthday celebrant. We had out of town guests who had never been there before and were picking up the tab. The food was still wonderful, but part of the Plainfield's experience is the service, which has always been excellent. Going to Plainfield's was like stepping back in time. Dignified, knowledgeable, discreet wait-staff silently and efficiently handled your every need almost before you knew you needed something (fresh water, a clean fork, a perfectly filled glass of wine, a fresh plate). Just some of the mishaps: the waiter slopped wine out of my glass because he tried to pour it from across my husband's lap; he took our order then forgot it and had to come back; he brought our main dishes without removing either the appetizer plates or the appetizer dishes from the table; we had exactly 2 glasses of water all evening; he served the main dishes to the wrong people then reached across us to move them around (nearly spilling sauce in my lap); brought the condiments after we'd already started eating our main dishes; never freshened the silverware. To their credit, they brought a birthday dessert to the celebrant, but never offered any of the rest of us even the dessert menu. This was once an exception restaurant. The food is still wonderful, but for the price, the service should be wonderful, too. Pros: Very good food, lovely dining room Cons: Bad service mars what should be a special dining experience more

Relaxed yet formal... 2/23/2007

Thuy, the new owner, spent some time chatting with us while we were enjoying our meal. She was charming and very enjoyable to listen to. The food was excellent and balanced in the approach to how it was brought out. Intricate flavors abounded. We went on Valentines Day and the meal was pre-set. In a sentence, we would go again and have the same menu, it was that good. The wine selections were excellent, we chose the Lava Cap and were in agreement with the staff recommendations! Our server checked in with us often, and our water glasses were never empty. We ate downstairs, and felt very well taken care of. I can not rate this establishment highly enough. Pros: Excellent parking close in downtown. Cons: None come to mind! more

Best place in Portland for a relaxed, romantic dinner 2/12/2007

When you want to spend a relaxed evening (2 1/2 to 3 hours) having a supreb, romantic dinner, this is the place to go! Our server, Nita, not only gave us excellent advice on wine and dinner selections, but also explained that the chef was willing to work with my dietary restrictions (lactose and gluten-free) and our request for spicier than usual food. Overall, the service was outstanding.\r \r We ended up having a nice bottle of Pinot Noir and Dahi Wada to start. Then we shared Gosht Saag Pudeena (Tandoori lamb) and Royal Biryani. I have eaten at many Indian restaurants through the years both in Portland and the Bay area (including Swagat's, the Bombay Cricket Club, and Got Curry? to mention a few of the best in Portland), but this was the best Royal Biryani that I've had anywhere. And I loved the touch of silver leaf on the top. Everything was excellent. For dessert, we had Chocolate Pecan Flan. While not a traditional Indian dessert, it was also excellent.\r \r We were so pleased with our evening that we plan to make Plainfield Mayur's ""our place"" to go. And we plan to ask for Nita again when we make our next reservation. Pros: Great food, great wine, great service, romantic ambience, easy off-street parking, European-style relaxed dining more

Delightfully authentic Indian cuisine. 2/7/2007

This was certainly not my first dining experience at Plainfield's Mayur, however, it was the first in about 6 months....and the first time I was actually inspired to write a review. Plainfield's has been a long time favorite of my family, and we were delighted to return after a less than satisfactory experience a few months ago, and find both the food quality and service restored to the former excellence we had come to revere at this fine restaurant. We discovered there is now a new chef running the kitchen, and our entire party was singing his praises throughout our meal. The wine list is exstensive and staff knowledgable. This is a true dining experience for someone who enjoys leisurely dining and exotic flavors dancing on the palate. Bravo!!!!!!! more

Pleasently surprised, wonderful service and my first experience with Indian food 2/7/2007

My son and I decided to take my wife to dinner for her birthday and Plainfield's created a most memorable experience. The ambiance of the restaurant, the cusine and the prompt, courteous service were genuinely appreciated.\r I had never tasted Indian food but luckily my son is somewhat of an expert. He and the waiter collaborated on our menu choices and what a fine job they did. The food was truly a wonderful adventure for both my wife and I. I know we will return soon and we certainly won't wait for a special occassion. I would highly recommend Plainfield's to anyone who can appreciate excellence in fine dining. Pros: Great food, ample parking, impeccable service more

Very Romantic, but service was a little slow 1/8/2007

We were new to Indian food, but were very pleased with what we found and Plainfields. We enjoyed the cozy setting and had a real great time. Service was slow, but I believe it was actually intentional. (trying to allow us time to talk and enjoy the environment) Pros: Romantic Cons: Slow service more

Best Indian in the United States 1/2/2007

I love this restaurant. Every time we go, whether it's for Valentines Day or just because I'm craving the Dahi Wadas, we always have a great time and leave feeling as though we've had the best meal of our lives. The staff at Plainfields are all very knowledgeable, friendly and great to talk with.\r \r Highly Recommended!!!! Pros: Bhel salad, dahi wadas, wine cellar, everything Cons: haven't found any yet more

Could be great, but isn't. Bad and slow customer service, luke-warm food, expensive. 12/8/2006

\r I went with a group of 9 on Friday night. The number in the reservation fluctuated a bit, but the flexability at this resteraunt was horrible. First, they sat us at 2 tables for almost an hour without coming to take drink orders. Oddly, it appeared that they purposefully avoided eye contact with anyone at our tables. Nearly an hour after we sat, the waiter came to take our order, but a significant portion of their menu was no longer available and no one told us when they gave us the menus! About 90 minutes in, our tables were pushed together and shortly after, our meals arrived. The food arrived semi-warm. I think they held the food under lamps or in an oven until they could push our tables together. This is fine, but nobody communicated anything with us. That was frustrating. After most of us had finished our meal we again had to wait to get our bill. Two and a half hours later our meal was done.\r \r All of that aside, the most frustrating thing was that the lower level of the resteraunt was full of empty tables, A table of 4 was seated downstairs, so it wasn't as though they closed that section of the resteraunt. \r \r All in all, they were understaffed, inflexible, slow, didn't communicate, and expensive. I won't be going back. more
