This makes me so sad. The last dinner we had at Plainfield's Mayur was a disaster. We've been going there since 2001, although not within the past few months. We were there to celebrate an important birthday, chosen specifically by the birthday celebrant. We had out of town guests who had never been there before and were picking up the tab. The food was still wonderful, but part of the Plainfield's experience is the service, which has always been excellent. Going to Plainfield's was like stepping back in time. Dignified, knowledgeable, discreet wait-staff silently and efficiently handled your every need almost before you knew you needed something (fresh water, a clean fork, a perfectly filled glass of wine, a fresh plate). Just some of the mishaps: the waiter slopped wine out of my glass because he tried to pour it from across my husband's lap; he took our order then forgot it and had to come back; he brought our main dishes without removing either the appetizer plates or the appetizer dishes from the table; we had exactly 2 glasses of water all evening; he served the main dishes to the wrong people then reached across us to move them around (nearly spilling sauce in my lap); brought the condiments after we'd already started eating our main dishes; never freshened the silverware. To their credit, they brought a birthday dessert to the celebrant, but never offered any of the rest of us even the dessert menu. This was once an exception restaurant. The food is still wonderful, but for the price, the service should be wonderful, too.
Pros: Very good food, lovely dining room
Cons: Bad service mars what should be a special dining experience
