Worst Service Ever 12/8/2006

I went to this restaurant for a birthday celebration and was so surprised at how poor the service and friendliness of that staff was. They had signs and plaquards up about how ""great"" they were, which was all false. Our waiter never brought us menus, the water filler lady did, and they neglected to tell us that they were out of chicken! How can a restaurant that is ""high end"" run out of items like that? To make matters worse, the waiter did not take our order for 49 minutes. Yes 49. When he did come and we tried to order he then informed us that they were out of chicken and lamb. Deciding that we would need even more time he started to leave?? Really this guy was something special. He never took a drink order; we had to interrupt him to get a bottle of wine. Then to make everything even better, when we finally go our food, it was cold. As well each dish comes with Naan; however, in their cost cutting efforts they did not supply the corresponding naan with dishes. Finally after eating our sub-par cold food, the waiter could not be found to bring us our check. I finally left exact change on the table with the rest of the folks and left. 2 1/2 hours to eat dinner had finally taken its toll. \r In summary, if you want bad, rude or inattentive service go here. To put it in perspective, Swaagat has better food and service then this place did. Buyer beware...\r Pros: nice silverware Cons: expensive, poor service, rude staff, cold food more

Gimme Naan of that 12/7/2006

This place has such potential that it is truly sad that it lives up to their bad reputation. The house is beautiful, the artwork is great, and the location could be perfect for an off-the-main-drag Indian restaurant. I read the bad reviews and thought, ""How could it be that bad?"" I went to see for myself and give it a try. I love Indian food. Indian food loves me. Unfortunately, Plainfield's failed to disprove any of their bad reviews. The service was slow (we waited 45 minutes at our reserved table before a waitstaff came by to inquire about drinks), the food was subpar (bland should not be an adjective to describe Indian food), and they were out of 2 of the 6 main entree dishes (how does an Indian restaurant run out of Tikka Misala?), and everything was overpriced ($26 for korma?). All in all, we were there for over 3 hours for dinner (and no dessert)! \r \r My advice: listen to the bad reviews!! This restaurant is for people that don't know how good Indian food can be. more

Bad Service Bad Food 10/9/2006

This is not good Indian food, will not go back again. Slow service and food was not seasoned properly. Disappointing. Cons: Slow Service, not tasty Indian food more

Salty Food and Bad Service 7/31/2006

Went here for a special occasion and the food was cold and salty. Considering there were only 2 other parties of 2 and 4 in the restaurant, the service was very slow. I have had better Indian food in the Beaverton area and the Silicon Valley. This place does not match it's reputation. Cons: Salty food and slow service more

This is Indian food? 7/16/2006

I've eaten at scores of Indian places all over the western US, and one thing is certain - I've never had Indian food quite like Plainfield Mayur's. Maybe this sounds like a good thing. It isn't. To be fair, I must say that our Dahi Wada was excellent. Unfortunately, everything is unusually expensive. Our food was excessively greasy and bland. The royal biryani ($18) was drenched in butter and, sadly, sorely lacking flavor. We were so disappointed that we took more than half of our food to go and let it spoil in the fridge at home. We were not asked how spicy we wanted our dishes (as several other tables were), so it's possible that our meal was prepared as if we were allergic to spices. I can only hope. Perhaps that would explain the 50 minutes between placing our order and receiving our food. Including the 25-minute wait for our ""reserved"" table, we were there for nearly 2.5 hours! Maybe it was a bad night for the kitchen. It certainly was for us. Pros: Easy parking, friendly waitstaff Cons: Overburdened waitstaff, VERY greasy/heavy food, complete lack of spice more

Romantic...Ambience, Service, Wine 6/20/2006

I enjoyed the dinining experiece but did not feel the menu had sufficient variety to suit my interests. The food was well prepared and the presentation was excellent. I enjoyed the lamb, loved the cucumber salad, but found the naan subpar. Service was superior (however I went when the resturant was nearly empty so it was not a good test of their service during busy periods). Pros: Ambiance, wine list Cons: Variety of food more

Everything was perfect 6/13/2006

I just hosted my daughters rehearsal dinner here. It could not have been better. The food was wonderful! I had a few guests that were afraid of Indian food who went away happily amazed. We prearranged everything and the staff was easy to work with. They kindly helped me every step of the way and did not once become annoyed with the nervous mother of the bride. We have been dinning here for years and were excited to host our special occassion here. I was pleasantly surprised at how reasonable my bill was. I highly reccommend Plaindfieds Mayur for a special dinner or everyday meals. I have my favorites but I don't think you could go wrong with anything on the menu. There is something for everyone from vegan, elegantly prepared vegetarian dishes to seafood and rack of lamb. The service was everything I wanted in the way of feeling taken care of without being intrusive. A perfect blend of friendliness and professional. Even down to how they packed up the remaining food for the bride and groom to enjoy after the Big Event. The patio was open and looks lovely. I like it being off the street in a wonderful setting. So! don't take my word for the wonder of this restaurant, check it out for yourself! Pros: elegantly served family style Cons: we got full and had to stop eating more

Eat here only when dying of hunger 12/11/2005

A friend and I recently visited Portland from Austin and had the greatest misfortune of trying Plainfield's Mayur for dinner. We ordered Baingan Bhartha (mashed eggplant), bhindi curry (okra) and vegetable korma. The food could not be any worse. The bhindi was half cooked, the eggplant was too salty, the vegetable korma was edible at best. The ambience is nice and the art display is good, but unfortunately a restaurent is not a museum -- FOOD IS THE FIRST PRIORITY. Pros: downtown location, good art display Cons: bad food, bad food, bad food more

Saturday night downer 8/26/2005

We have eaten here twice - once with a large group and once with a small family group. The food is so disappointing. The chicken tikka masala was made up of only poor quality brown meat. The plates are cold. The starters were average. Unfortunately we could not recommend this restaurant for atmosphere, food or service and, on both occasions, our minds have been open but the final result was not worth the effort of a drive to down town. SORRY but a big thumbs down. We have eaten Indian food in many countries and even if this is Indian food with a twist, the subtle spices and flavors were just fell flat. more

Plainfield's Not Really for indians 7/18/2005

I agree Plainfield's has an extensive wine list and everything inside the restaurant reminds me of India. But I am sorry to say that the food was very disappointing and the wait staff was not at all knowledgable about the food. My husband usually eats just about anything you give to him but he couldnt even take two bites of Makhani Murg. The naan was flaky like a pastry instead of being fluffy. I wouldn't recommend Plainfield's Mayur to anyone who wants real Indian food. Anyone with a recipe can do better than Mayur. On the positive note the salty lassi was ok. Cons: Expensive, Cramped , Non Attentive Staff more

Incredible Appeal 5/6/2005

My husband and I recently visited Plainfield's to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Though the food, ambiance and service were all of a very high caliber, not to mention the impressive wine list, the atmosphere was entirely unpretentious. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone in need of an excellent dining experience; formally attired or not. more

EXCELLENT! 3/1/2005

I was a student at UP and was assigned to try a different culture (through food, dance, etc.) and I chose Mayur. I brought a few friends and we were all blown away. The food was incredible, the atmosphere was great. I didn't think the price was too steep since college students were able to afford it and still have cash in their pockets! I can't wait to go there again! Pros: excellent food, beautiful setting more

As good as it gets! 11/3/2004

I have eaten at Indian Restaurants all over the world, but Plainfields sets the standard for my expectations now. Not only is the food great, but the wine list is one of the best I have seen any where let alone an Indian restaurant. It is evident that the owners are passionate about what they do. I had a 1972 Heitz cellars cabernet for only $64.00! It was great, not the perfect match with the food, but who cares! I would drink that wine with anything at that price. Pros: great wines, fantastic service, great food matching more

In a class of it's own 6/7/2004

Wow, What a find! It's great to find a restaurant that sets its own standards. I have never been to a Indian restaurant that had such a extensive wine list. The food was fantastic and the chef matched the cuisine to go perfectly with the wines. What a unique experience, and the wine prices are the lowest I have ever seen at a restaurant. I think that I am hooked on this place. Pros: large wine selection, inexpensive wines, great food matching Cons: , busy place more

Best Anywhere 5/31/2004

I've been around and searched out Indian Food. Mayur is better than 90% of NYC, London, SF, and Chicago. Certainly in a class by itself for Portland. Mayur is truly an experience that you shouldn't miss... at least once a month. Pros: Wine Knowledge, Authenticity, Vegan more

pampered service 5/27/2004

Had a wonderful meal at plainfields. The service was fantastic and food and wine superior. What a beautiful setting and the art work alone is worth going to see. I will be heading back! Pros: plenty of parking, Great wine list, superior service more

super experience 5/26/2004

I had heard of Plainfields but had not ever gone as I am a kind of meat and potatoes guy. But My wife dragged me their and what a suprise! The food is not over spiced and went great with the wine selection. I loved the rack of lamb with mint chutney and wild mushrooms. My wife had the scallops which the sauce was out of this world. For dessert we had their masala carmel chai ice cream, what a treat. Iam going back! Pros: great food, huge wine list, great service more

ronton 5/24/2004

I just had diner at Plainfields and had a great experience. I was there on a Monday and they have this half price wine offer on Monday's and Thursdays and wow what great deals on wines! It is nice to find a place that you can get a great bottle of wine with your diner at less thatn you can buy it at the grocery store. The service was great and the food sublime. I am going back next Monday for some more great wine buys. Pros: good parking, great service, great wine value more

A restaurant in a class of its own 8/27/2002

Wanting to take someone special out for their birthday and show them something they haven't tried before, I searched high and low for the perfect dinner date restaurant. Plainfield's Mayur was this and more. It's a beautiful location in a house where you may dine outside under the Gazebo or inside amid amazing Indian artworks. The hostess was charismatic and the authentic Indian food is to die for. If you want to go somewhere new for dinner. Plainfield's isn't a place you should miss. more

Awesome service, delightful food 7/29/2002

I hosted a party for 15 people on the Plainfield's patio last evening. My bill came to $300 and we all ate our fill of the wonderful food. Presentation was fantastic. Service was pleasant, thorough and discrete. Personally, I don't like the hovering, overly perky, water sloshing wait staff. If you want that go to Red Robin. Here the staff promptly fulfilled our many and varied requests with a smile. As to the poster who complained about no high chairs...USE YOUR HEAD! There are places where babies do not belong. As a Mom, I would not appreciate someone else's baby crying during my perhaps only night away from kids in a year. If you want family Indian food, go to a buffet style place. IF you need the ambiance and high level of cuisine at Plainfield's, get a sitter. Pros: great for groups, intelligent staff, flavorful food Cons: 1 hour from my home more
