best area sushi 1/10/2012

I have been going to the Matoi for over a decade and I have to say that in my opinion it is the best sushi restuarant around! I have tried many other places when traveling or with friends who claim to know the best place for sushi, but honestly none of them even compare for freshness and quality of food. The service has always been fantastic and everyone is very friendly. Try the lobster roll or the volcano roll, and the fried calamari is excellent, tru thfully I have never had anything that wasn't totally wonderful! ENJOY more

hands down best service!!! 8/19/2011

I frequent matoi sushi often and I must say that this is the finest sushi restaurant around. What most people dont realize is that most sushi places offer fish that is not fresh without you even knowing it. I have been looking for fresh fish in tampa and found it at matoi. This is the freshest highest quality fish you will find in tampa. The service is fabulous especially sook who is extremely nice and fast service. more

THE BEST SUSHI PLACE IN TAMPA 2/24/2011

I have been going to Matoi for quiet some now. I think this is the one of the best quality place in town. I think sushi rolls are superb and fresh. Granted, the place can use more fashionable decor, but I have never had a bad meal here. I travel to NYC alot. I have been to some crazy expensive places in NYC but Matoi beats it every time with just a good food. I dare to compare this restaurant to some of the zagat's top japanese restaurants in NYC. Good place to impress your date for your foodie IQ.. more

Best sushi in Tampa, possibly all of Florida 9/22/2010

Hands down THE BEST place for sushi in Tampa. I was down in Pompano beach and had sushi at a restaurant down there that my friend said was pretty good. The food there was nowhere near as good as Matoi. I suggest you sit at the sushi bar and have Sam make something for you off of the menu. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. When they have it, the fatty blue fin is extraordinary, as well as the octpus head. I know... sounds weird but it's excellent as well as everything else. more

Great Sushi In Tampa 5/20/2010

I come to visit my family in Tampa near Westshore and everytime I am in the area I always go out to eat at Matoi Sushi. Sam, I think that is the owner, is always so friendly to me and now knows me by name. He also knows that I love his Dynamite Roll, which is now my favorite item on the sushi menu. I always order sashami when I am there and every time that I have gone the sushi is always fresh and tastes great. I treat my friends out to a dinner at Matoi when I can, and they have come to love the place as much as I do. I would recommend this place to anybody looking for a quiet place to eat fresh, tasty sushi in Tampa. Pros: Very Friendly, Fresh Sushi, and Reasonable Prices Cons: I don't live close enough to eat more often : ( more

Fresh, Yummy Sushi - Not overpriced 5/17/2010

What can I say...I like this place. It's relaxed and not over done so your not paying extra for the ""special"" decor. The sushi is fresh and I love the rolls. The wait staff is a bit relaxed, but that is one of the things I like about this place to begin with...it's not uptight or super expensive. Sometimes I'm just tired after work and want so good sushi!! This is the perfect place. Pros: Fresh Sushi at a reasonable price Cons: Wish it was FREE...but, nothing is more

Excellent Sushi and Excellent Service 5/12/2010

Visited Matoi this evening and thought it would be good but it was fantastic!!!! First off Sam the manager greets you at the sushi bar with a smile and a big hello. He's personable and very friendly. He's more than happy to answer any questions you have. The sushi was the best I'd ever had! It was fresh, light and really tasty. I had the spicy tuna, salmon skin roll and some tuna. It's the kind of meal that tastes very good and doesn't leave you stuffed. The spicy tuna was not over powering, just right. Sam put a special touch on the salmon skin to make it extra tasty. The maguro (sp) was the best I've ever had. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. They have tables, booths and plenty of room at the sushi bar. The restaurant is well kept and clean. If you're in the mood for fantastic sushi Matoi is the place to go! Have no doubt Try it . You'll go back. Richard Gray Pros: Fantastic sushi !! Friendly service from everyone. Cons: I don't live in Tampa. more

Simply Amazing 4/12/2010

3 Years ago I discovered Matoi with some friends while working in the Tampa area. That night was AMAZING!!! It was among the best Sushi I have ever had. And the staff was as top notch as the food. It made such an impression I went back before I left Florida. The following year I went back hoping to have some of that sushi again only to learn that there was a fire and they were closed to rebuild. So, that brings me to this year. I went last night. They were open for business. I found a place at the sushi bar and ordered. And again, it was AMAZING. The second order was also AMAZING. So much so I got lost in the bliss of what I was eating and left without a very important item. I called today hoping that someone might have found it. I talked with Sam and he searched and searched. no luck. So we hung up. A few minutes later I get a call back. HE FOUND IT!!! And was able to make arrangements to ship to me (since I had already left town). This is one instance where the service went really far beyond the food...and the food was (again) AMAZING!!! And I imagine many people have had experiences like mine at Matoi. Bottom line. I WILL BE BACK. Hopefully soon!!! Pros: Excellent Sushi. Excellent Staff more

Best sushi 3/31/2010

I Was in Tampa area after an appoinment. We were going to go into perkins but decided not to. Went to Matoi instead. I got to say the sushi here is great. I loved it. The staff was very friendly and very informative when we asked questions. The place is very nice and quiet . You would never know that you were on a busy road. I would definetly recommend this restaurant. I live in Spring Hill and i plan to make the trip for lunch often. Keep up the good. I can see why you have been there for so long. Pros: Good sushi and cold beer. Friendly staff and informative. more

I do lots of travel because of my job. When I go somewhere and found one of restaurant that I like that makes my whole trips happy. Matoi sushi is the one of two thumbs up and my favorate five star restaurant I would recommand to anyone who visiting Tampa! Thanks to Mr. Sam, the owner:) more

Excellent Sushi! 2/16/2010

I'm a sushi fanatic and have tried almost every single sushi restaurant in Tampa. Not only are the rolls excellent, but sashimi is always fresh. I've recently become a regular customer of Matoi's and I'm pleased with the food every single time. Korean food is also very tasty and traditional. This is my favorite sushi place in Tampa so far. Pros: Sashimi is always fresh more

not bad 2/14/2010

went on valentines day with my girlfriend. there was a nice atmosphere, we ended up in a booth in the corner. the food was good, though it cost about as much as other sushi places, so not exactly cheap. the only things we got were sushi rolls, so can't comment on the rest of the food. the special roll (bottom of the menu, description is ""surprise"") was actually pretty good, though i imagine it changes from time to time. i would go back again, though probably not too often simply because of the price. Pros: nice atmosphere, good food Cons: about as expensive as other sushi places. more

Could be Better 2/2/2010

My wife and I found this place by accident and decided to try it. First time we noticed a dank smell in the place but we were hungry so we ordered. The sushi and rolls are very good, but we've had better elsewhere for the same $$$. We've hit this place a few more times since then and noticed the customer service getting progressively worse. The guy doing all the waiting seems to be more interested in checking out the girls there. Last time we waited and waited for our drinks while others that came in after us got served their drinks - doesn't take much to just fill a glass with coke so it was unacceptable. So we got our drinks and food at the same time. Then we noticed when my wife's order was ready before mine, he set it down unattended on a regular table for a good 8 mins while customers are entering and leaving, walking right past the food. The guy there needs to keep his mind focused on serving the customers and off the chicks. He even ignored us when we called him to ask for our drinks, then he acted like he forgot or that we didnt' order drinks in the first place. The sushi is good, and the place is definitely worth a visit but service sucks. Pros: Great Sushi and Rolls Cons: Poor customer service more

5 Stars??? 1/16/2010

I don't know how this restaurant got rated 5 stars. At best, I would give it 2 stars... AT BEST! I was curious if I was the only one that had this opinion, so I browsed a few of the other reviews. It seems that there are people who loved the place, and others that did not like it at all. I fall into the latter category. I was unimpressed by the service and the sushi. I won't be going back. Pros: Not horribly bad. more

ABSOLUTELY IN LOOOOOOVE 1/6/2010

ALL I CAN SAY IS ""WOW"" !!!! SUSHI WAS AWSOME! I DONT WANT TO BASH ON THE OTHER SUSHI RESTAURANTS IN TAMPA BUT YOU NEED TO STEP UP!!! ALL I CAN SAY IS THIS RESTAURANT IS THE BEST IVE HAD IN A WHILE! I JUST MOVED TO TAMPA FROM NEW YORK AND DESPARATELY NEEDED TO FIND A GREAT SUSHI PLACE AND I FINALLY DID! ""MATOIS"" SERVICE WAS FAST AND FRIENDLY FOOD WAS SOO GOOD I COULDNT STOP EATING! AS MY HUSBAND AND I WAS SITTING EATING OUR SUSHI I SAW A LOT OF DIFFERENT KINDS OF DISHES COME OUT OF THE KITCHEN AND AS THEY WERE SERVING IT TO THERE CUSTOMERS MY HUSBAND AND I WOULD SIT THERE ASKING OUR WAITRESS ""EXCUSE ME WHAT IS THAT? EXCUSE ME NOW WHAT IS THAT?"" HAHA WE HAD FUN THEY WERE VERY FRIENDLY AND KIND TO US AND TO EVERYONE ELSE! I WOULD DEF RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO EVERYBODY! NEXT TIME WE GO WERE ORDERING NOT JUST SUSHI BUT DIFFERENT THINGS OFF THE MENU EACH TIME! THANK YOU MATOI!!!! Pros: BEST SUSHI IVE EVER TASTED Cons: NOTHING I CAN THINK OF more

SLOPPY 1/6/2010

I heard from a coworker that Matoi had been around for many many years... so I dropped in one night with my husband to check it out. All I can say is that both my husband and I were not one bit impressed by the food, the service, or the place! First of all, parking is limited and situated right on a busy highway; second, the service (or lack of) is under par; most importantly, the sushi is... sloppy (for the lack of a better word). I am a sucker for sushi, so I have tried a lot of places around town, and Matoi is not a place that I will be returning to. It could be that I went on a ""bad"" night. But, I definitely don't think I would want to return to a place that might be inconsistent in the quality of food and/or service. I would recommend Yoko's. It's close to Matoi in distance, but far ahead in the quality & taste! more

Back, and better than pre-fire 9/11/2009

I go to Matoi at least once a week for lunch. Friendly, fast service puts this place at the top of my list. Liked it before the fire put them out of commission for awhile, but now that they're back, they are better than ever. The atmosphere is very clean (new), comfortable, and it's a great place whether you're in the mood for great sushi or Korean comfort foods like Bulgogi or Dolsot Bibimbap. Kimchi is good here too. Pros: Great sushi OR Korean comfort food Cons: um... none more
