Homeless Daycare Site at GSO Library 10/28/2006

The Downtown branch of the Greensboro Public Library has turned into an adult daycare center for homeless adults. After drinking and getting high at night, the homeless men trudge over to the library to hang out all day. Many of them sit all day in the upholstered cloth chairs by the windows, hidden behind large magazine racks and free to doze as long as they remain erect. The library public bathrooms are available as needed all day. Several evenings each week a "Feed the Homeless" group comes to serve free meals just outside the GSO Library. The beleaguered GSO Library Security Guards and librarians do their best, but numerous incidents of conflict occur daily between library staff, patrons, and the homeless men. Why doesn't the GSO City Council develop a Homeless drop-in center or daytime shelter for this population? Why has the public library assumed responsibility for homeless social service problems that should be handled by our city government? more

Excellent & friendly library! Superb children's room! 3/30/2006

The staff in the children's room could only make me feel more at home if they let me walk around in my pj's and slippers! And knowing Ms Pam, if I asked nicely, she probably would let me! The Central Library has lots to offer all age groups; however I am most knowledgeable about their children's room. The librarians in the children's room are quite knowledgeable when it comes to the world of literature. They are willing and able to help you find that perfect book for your child. Even if it is an age-appropriate factual book about the Titanic for a 3 year old! Their story times are wonderful -- they truly love books and love children. You can't help but know those 2 things after a visit there. They allow children to be children (in other words: your child does not have to perfectly quiet to visit this children's room) as long as you are with them. Three times a year the children's room offers FAMILY PLACE. This is a workshop for parents/caregivers of 12-41 month olds. Play with your child while Ms Pam brings in local resources to answer questions on child development and other child topics. Ms Jamie (from ArtQuest) is at each session with a fun art/craft project for the children to do. The cost is free -- you just have to register. The selection of children's books as well as new fiction is wonderful. (Those are the 2 sections my 4 yr old and I frequent.) The entire staff is friendly and helpful. more
