Caffe Gelato

I had dinner at Caffe Gelato last night with a couple of friends. We have been to this restaurant at least 6 times previously. The menu is the same all the time.....I haven't been there for 1 year and really expected to see something different. I usually try something I've never had before. The quality of the food has always been good although overpriced. This establishment is very small, so the tables are squeezed together leaving very little room to move about, especially when trying to put your coat on or off. You have to keep your coat with you as there is no other place to put it. When we sat down, two of us almost dumped all the dishes and silverware in the floor because of the tightness and catching the tablecloth with our clothing. The food at Cafe Gelato is great, but the best thing about it is their homemade Gelato for dessert! If you don't have room after you've eaten a meal there, be sure to take some home for later. You won't regret it! Pros: Ambience and Gelato Cons: Spotty service more

If you haven't been to Caffe' Gelato yet, you're missing the hidden treasure in Newark for gelato, brunch, an upscale lunch without the upscale price or a nice dinner out. I've done all, but was there last month for dinner with the family. A family favorite is the daily ravioli special, and particularly the crab ravioli. It was not that day's special but the chef was willing to oblige! The salad was fresh and I recommend the house dressing. The soups were hot and creamy and dinner was filling for all. The teens managed to find room for gelati which my daughter compares favorably to the gelati she had in Rome. I am a lover of Italian food and culture. Having visited Italy many times, I am always on the lookout for new and exciting Italian food. At Cafe Gelato, I found classic recipies with a modern twist. At my last visit I had the black bean pasta with scallops. The sauce was thick, flavorfull and well seasoned. The scallops were fresh and tender. The service was prompt and cheerful. My mother and I had a wonderful evening. The atmosphere very artistic and modern with lots of original artworks. I will be visiting again and again. The Tiramisu at Cafe Gelato was the best Tiramusi I've had ever. Having dessert in a fine dining environment was awesome. Very friendly wait staff, even though we went there only for dessert. I will go there again, this time for their awesome food! The dessert had perfect blend of coffee and sweetness that you would expect. You will not leave this place disappointed. Their ambiance in the middle of Newark's main street is great. it is in the middle of a college town - fine dining in the middle of a college town. Caffe Gelato is one of the most unique restaurants I have ever eaten at. The plates always come out looking like art, at first you'll be afraid to take a bite, as to not destroy it, but then you do and it?s so good you cannot stop! I have yet to find a dish I did not like at Caffe Gelato. Wine list is very extensive, and there is a bottle for everyone?s price range. While the food and wine is top notch and you dine with white table clothes in candle light, you never feel out of place, you can come right from work in your suit in tie, or in Jeans and a T-shirt right from a day of shopping. The restaurant is practically in the middle of the UD campus, so the wait staff is made up of mostly hard working college students, putting themselves through school. While they're not always the most knowledgeable about the most expensive bottle of wine on the wine list, they work hard to make sure you have a good time. Creme brules are super yummy! Always changing unique flavors, one of my favorite bourbon soaked cherry! There are some drawbacks though, the restaurant is small, small tables, small spaces. Reservations are a total must, and even when you have a reservation, sometimes you have to wait. It can be a bit crowded and noisy during peak dinner hours, however that adds to the excitement of eating there. If you want a quieter dining experience, just come after 8. I also saw in other reviews that parking was a con, but the wait staff eagerly validates your parking if you're in a municipal lot on main street (there are three large municipal lots near the restaurant... so if you're having a hard time finding parking, you're not looking in the right places). My husband and I love going for a romantic dinner, but its also fun to go out with all the girls for wine, conversation and food! Either way, you have to try this restaurant. Very interesting menu items. It is not something you are going to get at the restaurant down the street. The service was great. We had a party of 9. Despite being a small restaurant, they were able to accomodate us and service us to our satisfaction. Having been to other restaurants, this was no small accomplishment! I was looking forward to eating at Cafe Gelato because of al the favorable reviews I've read, so I went to lunch during Newark's Restaurant Week. It was very disappointing. The soup, a potato with truffle, was very bland. My mother had a chicken salad panino, and it was also very bland. I had crab stuffed raviolis and they were very good. Before we asked for the check, we notified the waitress that we had a coupon that was sent to our home address. My mother is on the mailing list. The coupon said not to open it until we got to the restaurant. ""No Peeking"" was in bold letters. The waitress told us we should of opened it earlier, and we could use it another time ""b/c it might of been a free appetizer and I don't want to run back and put in an order to go"". I said we'll forgo it if it?s a free appetizer, can we just see what is inside first? No, she replied; use it when you come back. I educated her that it expired at the end of January, and it was already the 27th. After a loud sigh, she opened the envelope. It was a free scoop of Gelato and we had a scoop on the check. She said she would take it off and bring back the check. She brought back the check; it still had the gelato on it. Just wanting to leave, we didn't bring it up, gave her $50 cash for a $35 check, and handed her the parking tickets to be validated. I asked, do I give these to you and you bring them back with my change or ask the host at the door (who was very friendly and polite) She replied she could do it for us and brought back the validated parking ticket with no change. Yes, I had to ask for my change on my tab. She claims she didn't realize we weren?t' giving her a 43% tip. We finally left, after leaving a 20%tip, which at this point I thought was more than generous. When we attempted to pull out of the parking lot to leave, we found out our parking ticket wasn't validated either. If you really want to try Cafe Gelato, I'd suggest take out. Pros: Looks to be reasonably priced and a nice menu Cons: The service was bad and the food wasn't good enough to over look that aspect. more

This restaurant is fantastic! Whether you like sandwiches, steak or pasta, you are in for a treat here. Service is superb and the atmosphere is cozy and charming, if a little loud at times. Definitely worth checking out - you will quickly beomce a repeat customer! more

Everything about this place was wonderful!! Great food!! Great service!! Very highly recommended. We ordered steak and a pasta dish. There was so much food we had to bring half home. I have never been at a place where everything was perfect. The Wait staff was excellent, the food was beyond amazing in taste,presentation,and served at just the right time. It was the best experience I have had at a reasturant in 30 years. Pros: Thumbs up! more

Have dined many times for dinner and brunch. Food is always good and entree specials add to the standard menu. Small, intimate dining room on Newark Main Street usually crowded which shows customers return for quality. Service typically attentive and owner Ryan always there. Fish, meat, pasta dishes good. Sunday brunch omelettes and crepes very good. Many gelato flavors to choose whether dining in or taking out. Unique restaurant for Newark. Upper scale but fairly casual. Great intimate place for dinner. Good value (food vs price). Excellent house salads, nice wine menu, BEST scallops & risottos, excellent pasta pesce special. GREAT PROMOTIONS. Love the wine dinners (good price - fun time - great food). Great any night of the week. Call for reservations on weekends (stop by for take gelato anytime). Outdoor seating is nice in warm weather; center of the restaurant table are always good, as are the booths on the right side. Tables on the left are too small for more than two (they're fine for two), but they'll seat three there - beware. Also, only just recently, was seated twice in front of the area where the register is (might be a new table to make more seating) and spent the whole night with waitstaff reaching over us to get glasses. We chose our wedding date over a delicious dinner on the patio at Caffe Gelato and planned our dinner reception there for 6 months later. Our reception was perfect from start to finish - from the appetizers and wine selection to the gelato and cake for dessert. We had a choice of the best filets and, my personal favorite, Mushroom Marsala with chicken, in addition to a vegetarian seclection. My husband and I have eaten several lunches here and have always had a hard time deciding what to order. Their daily specials have always been tastey, and yesterday was no exception. We both ordered the tomato and crab bisque and loved the creamy texture. The panini are always inspired. One of their ""regular"" offerings is a pasta dish of artichoke hearts and sundried tomatoes with a feta cheese sauce. It was a great combination of textures, and sweet and salty flavors. Save room for dessert! The white chocolate almond creme brulee was fantastic. If you sit outside, you have 20,000+ University students to watch. If you sit inside, you may enjoy the paintings and other artwork from local artists. The art changes monthly, so you have an excuse to go every month. As others have said, there is a frequent diner program with lots of certificates and other incentives. So if you are local, be sure to sign up.
