Good food but terrible service 9/24/2007

I miss their mango dessert so I went there for dinner tonight. Food was good but service was terrible. Someone other than our waiter brought out our food and our waiter never stopped by to ask what he can do for us after taking our orders. We were completely done with our main course and were just waiting for him to take our plates and offer dessert but we waited forever. We even tried to wave to get his attention. He waited all 3 tables next to us and totally ignored us. The tables were literally only inches away from each other. We had to ask other waiters to get everything we needed. more

Food is not Good 7/12/2007

Don't go here if you're looking for good food. It's a nice atmosphere, but besides the garlic rolls the food is terrible. The manager is also very rude. I went there with a few friends for my birthday and I ordered the Fettuccine Sun-Drired Tomato Pesto. It didn't remotely resemble the taste of pesto or sun-dried tomatoes. It also had a fishy after taste. When I complained to the manager he had a total attitude with me. He said ""it isn't a pesto sauce"" even thought the menu says describes it exactly as ""Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto-Basil Cream."" He exchanged it with reluctance but was just so rude about it that if left a sour taste in my mouth. Then they tried to rush us with the check. Never going back there again, even the garlic rolls are not worth that type of experience. Pros: outdoor seating Cons: taste of food, attitude of manager more

Good Italian Food, Nice Atmosphere, Large Portions 5/15/2007

They have a very cute outdoor patio. The calamari is very good. The chicken parmesagn and the eggplant parmasagn are both really good. The lasagna, however, is not. I would definitely skip it. The pesto here is not the green kind, it is red. I would say skip it. The garlic rolls are tasty and they keep your bread plate full. Overall, I like this place. The portions are large, so go hungry. more

Overrated tourist trap 2/25/2007

Since we live nearby, we've tried to give this place a chance but it seems to disappoint every time. Yes, the garlic rolls are great, and so is the cheesebread at Sizzler but you're not aching to wait in line for an hour to eat there, are you? Average Italian food (never bad but never great) and the much-ballyhooed breakfast/brunch is often cold upon arrival and salty -- also mediocre -- the cafeteria/assembly line feel of the place isn't for me. The location is great but there are just too many better, fun and romantic options in the Venice/Santa Monica/Culver City area to ever make this a regular ""must-eat"" destination. Pros: Location, garlic rolls Cons: Average food, Factory-like service more

Garlic roll heaven and great value 2/7/2007

Garlic roles by the dozen....by the pound. God they're good. Did you ever notice how much better of a mood you're in when you get free stuff? I mean seriously...they even give out their garlic goodness to people waiting for a table on the sidewalk! Great pasta...my fav is the fussili (sp?) peppers with chicken. And also surprisingly, C&Os house chianti is really quite good....its suits a lot of the dishes on that massive menu of theirs. As summer comes around, I'd recommend sitting outside...its quite fun. Pros: Value, portions, chianti Cons: Parking more

I've been coming to C&O's for years and now also enjoy the Cucina down the street. I love the family-style dining and their garlic rolls are to die for! The whole atmosphere is great, but... I went here a couple of weeks ago for a friend's birthday. We had a reservation for 12 at 7pm on a Tuesday. Although not everyone arrived on time, we called our friends and had ordered for everyone by 7:20. Not too bad, right? However, the manager obviously didn't think so and was visibly upset and extremely rude to us. After telling his staff not to bring us bread, he came by the table and practically yelled at all of us for being late. We calmly told him that if the restaurant had a problem with people being late that they shouldn't seat an incomplete party. When we asked to see the owner, he informed us that HE was the owner and then as if to mollify us said that he would bring us some bread. We later found out that he definitely was NOT the owner... how rude and deceitful was that? Notwithstanding, I assured the friends that had never been here before that it was a very unusual experience for us. I still plan to go back, but hope to never run into that person again. Isn't a manager's job to minimize these kinds of embarassing situations? At the least you would think that he wouldn't create one. Pros: Food, Ambience, Service Cons: Manager, Parking more

Pasta lover liked it 1/19/2007

I've only been here once before, but I think I'll come here much more often. I LOVE pasta and although I don't pretend to be a ""pasta-know-it-all"", I think I know when it's good and when it's not... and this pasta was GOOD. As mentioned in all other reviews, the garlic rolls are irresistible and really addictive. The house Chianti was a perfect match to the food served, and the pasta was simply delicious. I tried everyone's plate and the taste kept getting better as I jumped between the different dishes. The sauces were quite flavorful and rich. It was a cold night in the terrace but the heaters kept us warm. The staff was pretty courteous but they took their time to attend us. Last but not least, the price was very reasonable, especially considering that you will have to take half of your portion in a box for next day's lunch. Pros: Food, garlic rolls, price Cons: slow service, parking more

FYI, I went on a weekday and got there early (6:30 PM). Maybe that's the trick. Anyways, I'm going there again tonight! Pros: Food, garlic rolls, price Cons: slow service, parking more

Good, old Cheese and Olive (C & O) 1/14/2007

I have eaten here about 50 times over the past 25 years and have seen the progression from very good to good, to mediocre, to below average. The homemade Pasta used to be plenty and good. It still plenty but the quality is worst than most pasta you can buy in grocery stores. The sauces are not that good either. The Chianti was of the cheap variety but was very good (They used Frescobaldi?s). Now it is just a bad wine, unless you are trying to get drunk. The service was never great, long wait to sit and long wait to get served, but it was the best place to take a large group out. It is not recommended any more. Pros: large portions Cons: Quality more
