Best

I have been going here for about 3 months now and about twice a week. This is some good stuff and well worth the money.\r \r Staff is friendly and quick.

Worst

Japanese Korean fusion confusion 2/14/2011

Since it opened, I have always enjoyed eating here, and we have our own sets of chopsticks on reserve. There are some traditional Japanese foods, like miso soup, edamame and tempura. The ahi tower, which they claim as their original creation, is the best I've had in the Austin area, and both the ginger and miso dressing on the beautifully prepared house salad are delicious. My family has enjoyed taking over a tatami room for large birthday parties and being treated to the Chef's Specials. The service has always been fast and courteous. On the downside, over the years, the fusion part has changed for the confusing. The current ""fresh Scottish salmon"" is a serious disappointment (and I've had salmon in Scotland), looking like processed frozen filets that come out tasting bland and dry. The bulgogi style vegetables are over-cooked and over-sauced, and the neon green wasabi mashed potatoes taste like instant boxed flakes. On the other hand, if you stick with the sushi and sashimi, you can't go wrong. If you truly want traditional Japanese, go elsewhere. more

Not what I expected 7/4/2010

First time I have ever been and I wanted to see what all the hype was about. The sushi was ok, not to bad, the service was excellent. BUT the place looked old and tired.Scuffs all over the floor, unbused tables, chips in the faded paint. 2 Live Crew on the speakers ( no joke here ). Decorated like they went to Garden Ridge across the street. I didnt get the hype. I might be back, but there are too many choices in RR. Pros: sushi was ok Cons: the atomosphere more

This place is amazing!! 1/13/2010

My friend recommended beluga and I'm glad she did. I have dined at many sushi restaurants and this one has been very impressive. staff was attentive and the sushi was very fresh and tasty. I would definitely recommend the ahi tower. overall, I was satisfied with all my selections. more

Definitely Not Japanese 1/11/2010

First, upon entering, I heard 'Yobo Seo' which is a greeting in Korean. The correct greeting in Japanese would be, 'Irashaimase'............rice was undercooked in my original plate and in the bowl they brought me to make up for the first rice. If the rice isn't right, .....look out! Owner / manager wanted to give me sushi rice instead....which is covered in vinegar.......please! He commented to me, ""wow, you must really like sticky rice."" I replied, ""No, I just like my rice cooked properly."" Also; chicken katsu was way over cooked ....dry like cardboard. Soft shell crab was obviously prepared beforehand. This is a roll that should be served warm! Salmon sushi was good. Service was great considering the food.....Will I go back you ask?..........Uh......no. Pros: Good service Cons: Food was a feeble attempt at authentic Japanese more

Awesome sushi 11/3/2009

This place didn't look too great based on its location, so it took us a while to go try it. But boy was it awesome. We started off with with Ahi Bowl (or Ahi Tower, I forget the exact name), and it was unbelievably good. The sushi was the right temperature, fresh, and beautifully presented. Atmosphere inside was also very nice. We like sushi and have tried a few places in Austin since moving here, and this has been by far the best. Pros: Great food, great happy hour prices Cons: Location more

Owner not honest enough 10/13/2009

Wait person took our AmEx card then came back with a small register paper said invalid amount or something like that. What we thought is they don't like to take AmEx then just simple take the sign out. We just gave her another card to use. \r Service is also poor Pros: food is good Cons: servicer not good more

Delicious!! 6/25/2009

I don't eat Sushi but my fiance loves it so we decided to go here. He loved all the sushi he had. We also ordered the calamari as a starter and it was by far the best calamari I've ever had! I had the spicy chicken and it was excellent. I would definitely recommend it and don't be fooled by the location. The inside of the restaurant is very nice looking and it has a great ambience. Pros: Best calamari!!! more

Recommended, great food, great service each time. 12/30/2008

Have had dinner at Beluga three times and each time it has been equally wonderful and the service great. The Ahi Tower is an artistic dish with the final preparation/served and divided among guests at the table. The Yellowtail rolls, and fresh salmon sushi & sashimi are fantastic. Other favs of our group are the Firecracker, Black Widow and Volcano (scallops). The ginger dressing on the house salad is so tasty. They make a nice dirty martini. Glad to have a favorite spot on the north side. more

Great Service and AHI TOWER 9/18/2008

My family and I visited Beluga last Friday night before catching a movie and it was great. Our waitress Summer was fantastic and suggested several things that she thought we would enjoy. They were great and probably things we would have never ordered on our own. We felt like our service was very personal and another thing is the ahi tower was fantastic! We had never tried it before and so glad we did! We will keep coming back, and love this ""jewel"" of a restraurant is in our own neghborhood! Pros: Service, Food more

great sushi and staff 9/11/2008

I really do not understand the two reviews before mine. However me and some friends was told about Belugas through some others friends, so we thought we would give it a shot. Which was a true shot concidering we all live in south austin and its in Round Rock. We were greeted, and seated promptly. We had a party of 5, but instead of sitting at a table we sat at the sushi bar. Our server was Lisa. Awesome waitress. Not only did she recommend things but she keep our party in good spirits and laughs the whole time. Highly recommend the Ahi Tower. Great starter. Then the rolls a must would be Mr. Smith and the Jen-Jen. Sushi is great as well as the chefs preparing them. The guys were laughing with us as well as giving us other things to taste. So if you want somewhere north to eat sushi this is the place. Not sure but maybe these people before me had a bad day. But this place, food, and staff was great. Me and my boyfriend will be back and bring more friends.. And to whom ever wrote the thing about the manager, get a grip. Pros: Waitress and jen-jen Cons: um did or do not have any more

Nothing to complain, but nothing to rave about 9/6/2008

I came here a few weeks ago with a friend and I'd have to say the food was really good. The waitstaff was unprofessional and didn't seem to know anything though, and that was kind of interesting. My friend mentioned they had a great staff at one point but now she said they all seemed to not be there anymore and that the food isn't as great as she remembered.\r The Ahi tower was to DIE for! I'm craving it right now! Another thing that I enjoyed was the Salmon Carpaccio. Very simple but light and delicious. I'd definitely go back for those items.\r \r \r \r The review about the manager is just plain rude. I've worked as a waitress before and malicious comments like that is unnecessary.. they're trying to do their job. Pros: Ahi tower and the Mr. Smith Cons: Staff more

goto origami when in round rock 8/13/2008

i was recently told to check out a couple of sushi bars in round rock. dined at beluga and origami. the food at beluga was o.k. nice ambiance if you enjoy dining in a club like atmosphere. the service was good but not entirely friendly. the tuna tower came highly recommended(dont get it!). expensive for what it was. felt like i was pay for the presentation of sauces, not the food. the fish quality seemed just o.k. \r i ordered a cocktail and had to give them my license for some ""county"" thing(whats with that?) Pros: pretty place Cons: average food more

WOW! 7/29/2008

We had the best time here with the best sushi we have ever tasted! We have ""done "" sushi in many places. Most three times the price of this...but this was so amazingly yummy...Blue Goose happiness in my mouth...volcano...oh yes oh yesssss perfect spice... Black Widow.....little caviar bursts..crunchies ...smoothness..amusment park of taste and texture...Food is top notch....\r BUT....the service!!! Last time we went we had five kids with us ( 10-16) who are not the most sophisticated children or manerly..but they were given a list of specific allowed behaviours...Our server...I wish I could remember her name! Was fabulous..she made food sugestions for the won't eat aything kids...and served us as if we were royality.. not a glass went dry...not a dish was forgotten...she had a great wine recomendation...and was very knowledgeable about the food and ingriedents. We came out of there disapointed to see we were in Round Rock Texas because for almost two hours we felt like we were in the finest of NY or LA places. Fabulous! Pros: Too many to list Cons: ....I am trying....nope can't think of any... more

Experience Sushi/Sashimi in great atmosphere..... in Round Rock? 7/11/2008

We eat at Beluga's about once a week either lunch or dinner. We love it here. Seriously, the food is great & the service has been fabulous.\r \r Kelly is an amazing waitress. She knows exactly what we're drinking when we sit down. She's never made a bad recomendation as far new things to try. So helpful, So sweet.... If you get in her section, tip her well. She does a wonderful job.\r \r Jay & Eric are great if you ever have comments, good or bad. When Fish worked there, he was just as great before moving to Florida. Both Jay and Eric are very hands on and so attentive to their customers. More often then not, you'll see behind the Sushi bar helping the guys out & Eric is always walking around making sure everything is going smoothly.\r \r And the food... Oh, try the Ahi Tower with toasted nori to wrap bites of it up in. The escolar is perfect. melt inyour mouth, beautiful sahusi/sashimi. When you're at the sushi bar and the chefs offer something new to try, try it. They've never steered us wrong. \r \r Great specials to try too. our favorites are Sushi Happy hour from 5-7 during the week & 1/2 price sake on Friday nights.\r \r If you've not been here yet or in awhile, you have to try it. From outside, it's hard to imagine what you see on the inside. Once you're inside, there is great atmosphere, great music, & exceptional food!!! more

very good.. 7/9/2008

I have been here a couple of times during the week for lunch and stopped in over the weekend with some out of town guests. They raved about the sushi and loved all of the speciality drinks! We will be back for dinner. Pros: great sushi. Cons: still none more
