Zoo Atlanta

This is a great zoo, but yet it is the smallest zoo I've ever been to. On the plus side if you're taking kids and don't want to walk as much or spend the entire day here you could probably see it all and be done in a few hours. Personally I think it is way overpriced ($42 for one adult admission plus two kids) and animals that most zoos have this one does not (no penguins, camels, etc.). They do have an excellent gorilla exhibit that I do recommend but overall the place seems a little worn down. One plus is the free parking and if you don't want to eat at the McDonalds you can save some cash by bringing your own lunch. more

The Zoo Atlanta is expensive for only a one time visit, particularly for a family. However, if you join, you've paid for a family membership by the time you've visited twice. The first time we went (prior to joining) we felt like we had to stay for hours just to get our money's worth.It was $49 for 2 adults, 1 infant and 1 child over 2 yrs old. We decided to join as we left the zoo and we're able to apply our cost of admission for the day to the cost of 1 year membership. (89.00 family membership). Now we might go for an hour, just to see one or two animals, ride the train and the Carousel and get some ice-cream. Joining makes the experience more low-key. There's no pressure on the kids or the grown-ups to see/do everything. more

My husband and I love zoos. We've been to zoos in Miami, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Maine - all across the U.S. Although Zoo Atlanta will entertain your young'uns, it pales in comparison to some of the zoos we've been to - even some in smaller cities and towns with assumedly smaller budgets. more

The zoo is a big hit with us, and by buying a yearly pass, you avoid plunking down a pretty hefty admission price each time you and your children want to visit. The yearly cost pays for itself in just a few visits, and you are offered various perks and special programs throughout the year. It's also great because you can take the kids, and if there is a meltdown 15 minutes into it, you can just pack up and try another day without worrying about wasting the admission price. more

While this zoo might not be the biggest and/or best. I think it is just perfect for a family outing or for a place mom can take the kids on her own. I have gone several times and it is very doable in a couple of hours which is about all that young children can take anyways. I found there was plenty of shade, nice landscaping, plenty of chairs at the snack bars, the place was kept pretty clean. Yeah, the prices are a little steep but under 3 is free and there is a reduced rate for kids. My kids LOVED the big apes and watching the Pandas eat. Go when it is a bit cooler and you can see the animals moving around a bit more. more

Animal keeper talks, training demonstrations, fun shows, animal encounters and more! You must see Birds I View, close bird encounters to witness dramatic flights. They have many gift shops for plenty of toys, books and games that provide an eclectic mix of education and fun! For the kids other than all the fantastic animals they will see, they have Rock Climber, KIDZone Playground, Nabisco Endangered Species Carousel , and the Norfolk Southern Zoo Express Train. I love the panda's .Hours of operation are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission rates are 17 for adults and 12 for children. more

Zoo Atlanta is one of the few zoos in the US to feature Giant Pandas. From what I understand, the pandas were an enormous financial undertaking for the zoo, requiring that money go to China, to a new exhibit, and to train staff to care for them. From what I can gather, the zoo gambled big on the pandas, and lost. They thought the pandas would bring in huge crowds, which hasn't happened. So the zoo, stuck with the huge bill, has jacked up its prices to unheard of levels. $17 for an adult. $12 for a child. Imagine a family of 4 shelling out $58 for an afternoon at the zoo. People in the neighborhood buy a season pass, but for anyone else that cost is prohibitive. Not that I'd mind paying that amount for a great zoo, but Zoo Atlanta is definitely not that. Few of the exhibits allow the animals to roam through a natural-looking environment. Most animals are in cages or tiny natural environments that look like a cage with fake rock on the bars. I've been to zoos in Seattle, Nashville and St. Louis, and Atlanta's is my least favorite. It's also the most expensive. more

This is a pretty good small zoo. They have some really nice exhibits, especially the Pandas, but you can definitly tell they are always in the process of updating the older stuff. What is great about this zoo is that it is small. You can walk around it in about an hour and a half, depending on how much your kid dawdles. And it's usually really hot, and this place has a good amount of shade. There is plenty of food available, even a McDonalds. My stay at home mom friends say a membership is essential. more

Though no San Diego Zoo or Bronx Zoo, the Atlanta Zoo has fun for the whole family. There are many diverse animals at the park, though not as many as the two world-famous zoos. Still, your kids will learn a lot. If I were a parent, I'd take my kids to the kangaroo sanctuary in northern Georgia, as it is the largest population of kangaroos outside of Australia. Still this is a fun outing for the family. more

I have gone to the Atlanta Zoo a few times in the past couple of years. Sometimes it is fun and exciting, other times there is just nothing to do. I would recommend looking up the special exhibits and events going on before going, on days when there is nothing special I think the zoo is a pretty boring place. They do have fun kids activities and the famous residents of the zoo have always been available for viewing when I have gone. more

If it isn't to hot and you need something to do with your kids, head to the zoo! Atlanta's zoo may not be the biggest but it has some really nice features that make it worth your while. While the 'normal' animals are included - elephants, zebras, lions, birds, various reptiles - what makes the zoo a fantastic time is the panda bears and great apes. We have two great pandas who are always entertaining to the litle ones. My son loves to press his face against the glass and stare, even when the panda is merely sleeping. :) Also, the great apes are simply magnificent. Atlanta has a large number of silverback males as well as family groups with little apes playing. It's a fun day for the entire family. more

the animals were well kept, the environment was very well kept. Clean, well organized, and not too crowded. The zoo offered many rare animals that you cannot find in the area - not in birmingham, chattanooga, charleston, and jacksonville. I mean there's a panda in the zoo....i mean its worth it to see one for once. but after you've seen it, its not worht the price of admission more

I had fun, but it was a little pricey to see odoriferous animals. I realize that it costs a lot to maintain the animal's habitat, but I just did not enjoy as much as I had hoped. Even as a child, I was not terribly impressed (although that was a while ago). I hope that the new Atlanta Aquarium is more fun! more

Zoo Atlanta has a lot of very fun exhibits, including the panda bears. The zoo is quite large and the animals are displayed in their natural habitat. Children of all ages will enjoy riding the train throughout the zoo, which is a highlight of the trip. The zoo is more costly than other zoos I have been to, and they are not quite as large as other states zoos. A zoo membership is a good idea for families who want to visit the zoo more often. more
