Editorial review from Citysearch 12/22/2013

The Cheesesteaks are good, when they're fully cooked. I made the mistake of taking one to go and when I got to my destination I realized that the inside was RAW and cold. Also, the claim is that they open at 11am. DO NOT go at 11am. All you'll get from the staff are stares, scowls and ignored. I waited 5 minutes and then left without ordering. I had arrived at 11:10am. Still not sure if I will give it one more try or not. more

Atlanta's Best Cheesesteaks & More 10/11/2010

Never had a bad experience myself... **THIS JUST IN** I went for a bite Sunday and learned there is a new owner of this awesome spot! (looks like I am the last to know)\r Looking over Piedmont Park in between Midtown & the Virginia Highlands, Woody's has experienced a re-birth. Now open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner including late-nights on Friday & Saturday, they claim that delivery will begin soon as well. \r The Cheesesteak was awesome! Huge portion. Amorosa Rolls available on request. (i asked- they are statying true to the original Woody's formula, but answering the call for the roll made famous in Philly).\r My steak was incredible. Had the original with CheeseWhiz and added mushrooms. Nothing pre-cooked here. I watched the shaved meat go on the grill, saw it seasoned to perfection and chopped into submission as the fresh mushrooms were sauteed and the onions added. Just before meat net bread, the Whiz was applied! I opted for the original bread choice (locally produced just for them), and while it isn't the all-hailed and worshiped Amorosa, it is an excellent loaf! I will try the Amorosa choice next time. No fries here, so I grabbed some cops and a coke. The BEST Coca-Cola I've had... This joint's ice is amazing. With free refills, don't skimp on the ice. Lid off, No straw. Trust me.\r The steak was awesome. Tender and juicy. Packed with gooey, cheesy goodness. Why do I love Cheese Whiz so much? \r Why am I writing this at 6am as I lay in bed before getting ready for my day? Because I woke up wanting more. I'm gonna have more and it's gonna be today if I have anything to say about it. I want more of the sour cream & onion chips i shoved into the meat to add some great crunch. I want another milkshake. No, make it a malt. They make it old-school here. Ice cream scooped by hand into the metal shaker cup, a squirt of chocolate syrup and shot of milk added plus the optional Oreo cookies I had to have, and then I had to wait. Wait for a milkshake that you will remember. I love the consistency. There are all these little lumps of ice cream throughout the milky treat that i just don't find every day.\r As for parking... not the most perfect system, but what the heck, the property is a triangle on a hill with moving traffic on all 3 sides. \r This place is awesome. Slow down, get out of the drive thru. Here you walk up to the window to place your order where you might just be forced to try out the disappearing art of ""The Conversation"". Say hello to a stranger... Or are they? You both like Woody's.... I mean really, Who doesn't love a Woody?\r Thank you to the new Woody! Consider yourself warned...I'm coming for more! more

Worst Restaurant ever 7/23/2010

My grandchildren and I found woody's, Employees started acting funny. like they didn't see us. I asked to use the restroom. It was so small couldn't hardly fit in there. I'm using the bathroom, the employee burst in on me. He had cut his hand so he grabs a metal pan so the blood from his hand can drip in it. That was it, time to go and they probably was gay and I started thinking of aids and blood. wasn't hungry anymore. so we just got up and left. They bathroom is the place where they wash pans and mop floor with the same slop sink. yuk Cons: to small, no air ,bathroom is where they wash pans more

Slobfest! 1/26/2010

The guy who made my sandwich wiped and cleaned his hands on his NASTY SHIRT! Nasty man! We live in the ""glove era"" dude; get with the program. PS, the sandwich was semi at best. Cons: Horrible hygiene! more

Best Cheesesteak in Atl 7/26/2009

Woody's is a classic. They stick to a basic menu of cheesesteaks and dogs. The staff is friendly, just two guys one takes orders and gets drinks while the other cooks. Great fast lunch if your in midtown. Dont waste your money going to philly connection or any other garbage fast food joints Woody's is the real deal! Pros: fresh sliced meat, fresh baked bread, screened porch dining more

Worst. Cheesesteak. Ever. 7/25/2009

Let me preface this by saying that we're from Philly...so maybe our expectations are out of whack, but I really tried to not expect much in going to this anything-but-authentic cheesesteak joint. First there was no parking, then we waited, and waited, and waited to be addressed, which is a pet peeve of mine. Is it really that hard for an employee to say, ""I'll be with you in one minute"" to acknowledge your presence?!? Finally our order was taken, and we proceeded to wait for an ENTIRE HOUR (I swear I'm not exaggerating) for two cheesesteaks (which, by the way, should NEVER include MUSTARD!) and two milkshakes. The food was mediocre at best--and the milkshake was just sad (how hard is it to make a milkshake?!?); it tasted like melted ice cream. By the time we got our food, from the less-than-efficient staff of two, we were just over the whole experience. Pros: Can't think of any Cons: LONG wait, poor food, shortage of parking and seating more

Best cheese steak on the planet 3/1/2008

I've been going to Woody's for 10 years and it's consistently the best cheese steak I've found. Fresh bread, quality meat (finely chopped, the way I like it) and cheese. I order mine plain and the flavor is wonderful. If you don't specify they do put ketchup and mustard on it so be sure to order to taste. I can't attest to the other foods because I can't imagine going there and getting anything but a cheese steak. The shakes are good and the old school fountain Cokes are excellent. Pros: Fantastic Taste, Good Value Cons: Limited Parking, Limited Seating, Long Waits at Lunch more

Worst cheese steak sandwich EVER 10/27/2007

The cheese steak sandwich ""with everything"" includes steak minced to a fine mush, grilled onions and mustard and ketchup! Good grief! Who puts mustard and ketchup on a cheese steak? It was completely inedible. The one bright spot was the shaved ice. I just love a Coke with shaved ice. If I ever go back I'll try a hot dog, how bad can you mess that up? more

Once Great Steak/Cheese Joint Is On The Slide! Other Area Options Now! 1/6/2007

From the mid-seventies, through the mid-eighties, Woody's was always a pleasure to drop-in, before heading to the park. Of course more competition has moved in, and the face of Midtown is changing--closing of Silver Grill, Backstreet, etc. The Steak/Cheese Philly was the calling card. As was the terrific Banana Shakes! But poor service, poor food quality is taking a toll. Parking has always been a problem. But that great JJ. of L.A. sign, is still a landmark at this intersection. Pros: Philly Cheesesteaks! Shakes! Cons: Prices Going Up, Quality & Service Going Down! more

Very rude service at Woody's - You lost our business. 9/22/2006

We were at Woody's today for lunch and had an unfortunate experience. We are regular customers and love the philly cheese steaks. When placing our order (with one of the men that is always there, maybe the owner) we needed to change the cheese on one of the sandwiches and the man got very upset. Understand this wasn't a change after we received the food this was while he was writing the order down. He proceeds to tell us how he can't stand customers, he doesn't like people and he doesn't like taking orders. When I looked shocked that he said that, he continues with ""don't look at me like that"". He went on to confirm with my husband that he wants provolone cheese and my husband said ""that is fine"". He said ""I need a yes or no answer from you, not that is fine."" What is unfortunate is that we will never eat at Woody's again. I refuse to eat at a place that would allow someone to be so disrespectful to customers. You hate customers - bottom line, you shouldn't be in business!!! Pros: Food Cons: Service more

Best Philly Cheestake 12/23/2002

go early & take your patience with you. It's worth the wait. Try the Philly Cheese with everything. Incredible! Pros: Food, location, price Cons: parking, service, atmosphere more

Simple Pleasure 8/9/2002

Friendly owner and long time business owner who knows how to treat customers. You're always greeted with a smile and once you become a regular your ticket number is replaced with your name being called when your food is ready! Woody's is my regular Saturday lunch spot! Pros: Self-owner, great prices, Serve Coke Cons: So good, its crowded more

Melt in your mouth 6/17/2002

These cheesesteaks literally melt in your mouth. Tear off a chunk of chewy bread and prepare to enjoy a savory mix of chopped steak, cheese and onions. The restaurant's proximity to Piedmont Park and Midtown and Virginia-Highlands makes it a convenient place to stop for lunch. more
