Fun ambiance with great beer selection, but long waits for parties of less than six and very poor service. Food is average, typically heavy and greasy classic german food, but fai...

Pleasant Surprise 2/6/2003

I've heard about this restaurant for years, but have never tried it because I was afraid I wouldn't like German food. What a mistake! It was GREAT. The Ravioli appetizer was delicious--as was the pork with mushroom sauce and spatzle. The staff was extremely friendly and they have a wonderful selection of beer. Thumbs up! I'll definitely be going back. I think it would be fun to celebrate a birthday or special event with a group here as well. more

What a surprise! 1/14/2003

This restaurant defines what it means to dine German in SF. The ambience is pure europe - from the bleached pine tables hand scrubbed nightly - to the starkness of the plain room with its coved ceiling and hundreds of candles adding a surreal effect. The staff is the best. They clearly love their job and will laugh and treat customers like family. This restaurant has a huge base of regulars who swear by it. Foodwise, expecting those expecting heavy German fare won't be disappointed but unlike most other German restaurants in SF, it's really *good* food. And the beer selection of course is par excellence. Crowded on the weekends it's best experienced midweek. Shared great tables make the experience that much more unique as diners and waitstaff intermingle with your conversation. Pros: Beer selection, Ambience, Affordable Cons: Parking, Busy on weekends more

Deee-licious 11/11/2002

As someone who spent a few years in Bavaria eating the real deal, I've got to say that Suppenkuche hits the spot dead-on when I've got a craving for that hearty southern German cuisine. Eating here totally takes me back to the Bierhalle in Munich, and the beer selection, although sadly lacking my beloved Augustiner, is nonetheless very good. For those who don't like sharing a table with strangers--get over yourselves. Pros: Great food, Great beer more

Uber-authentic! 10/7/2002

I took friends of mine who were visiting from Germany and they said people speaking english was the only thing that made them realize they weren't in Germany. The food is DELICIOUS! Be prepared for LOTS of noise and a healthy wait if your group isn't large enough to make a reservation. The group seating can be a bit unsettling, but make the best of it. Pros: FOOD!!!, BEER!!!, FOOD! Cons: NOISE, NOISE, reservations more

fand ich nicht so aufregend... 8/29/2002

The food was OK, the side of cabbage was actually pretty good. I didn't like having to share the table with people that didn't even bother to say 'hello' when sitting down. I'd have prefered being asked first. more

Declining year by year 8/22/2002

I've had the pleasure of Suppenkuche's delightful food and beer and decor several times over the past few years but recent visits have been a disappointment. The noise level requires yelling (has it really always been that noisy?) and the service is lackluster, unprofessional and disorganized. On my most recent visit, my name and party size was recorded and I was told it would be 30 minutes. After an hour, two parties of the same size who arrived after us were seated before us. We were ignored by the hostess despite efforts to get her attention. The host offered us "a table in just a few minutes" after more than an hour when we were on our way out of the restaurant. Go to Walzwerk, go to Frjtz Fries (practically next door to Suppenkuche). Pros: yummy food, good neighbor, fantastic beer Cons: rude service, noisy more

Start a conversation with strangers... 7/25/2002

This restaurant serves several German specialities and plates are full. There are several vegetarian dishes. You will be seated at wooded tables without table clothes as seats are available. Therefore, you may share a table with others but this should not distract you. Large groups may have a problem getting seated. This is the same format you will see at the Octoberfest in Munich (auf der Wies'n) or at the "Stammtisch" in small European restaurants. The food is excellent but do not expect that they speak German fluently here! Excellent German beers (Erdinger, Weihenstephan, Pschorr, Franziskaner, et al.) are available in bottles or glasses up to 2 liters. What is missing is the Umpa music but it is already rather noisy from all the conversations. The bar area is miniscule. The real name is "Suppenküche" more

Excellent 6/11/2002

I have been here twice - both times it was excellent, everything was fresh, great flavors, and contrasts, speatzle was the best I have had in the U.S. Service was good, friendly waiter, good beer advice, I got what I needed and didn't get bugged either. more

Brunch Rocks! 6/4/2002

This is my new favorite place for Sunday brunch...only I brought my Jewish friend who is observant and unfortunately he could only eat a few things on the menu cause it's mostly ALL pork?! Still, the crowd is laidback, the waitstaff is friendly, ambience is mellow, and the food is excellent. Great potato pancakes, muslix, meat-filled ravioli, sausages, sauerkraut, etc. Oh...the most important part! The beer! I almost never drink beer anymore unless I come here. If you're new to SF, stop by here. more
