Sinful yet sooo good 11/21/2006

Dipping bread into what looks like melted butter with unpeeled shrump might not appeal to you. It didn't entirely appeal to me at first, but then I tried it. It was VERY yummy! It's very very greasy so I can't justify coming back very often, and it was kind of a pain to have to dip my fingers in the ""soup"" and have grease all over my hands for hours afterwards. But it was tasty and I'd like to come back sometime. more

Not killer. 11/15/2006

I am not really sure what the rave reviews are about, I thought this was pretty average. Don't get me wrong, I love shrimp, I love spicy, I love dives. But this was just ""meh"" and I had a stomach ache for quite a while after. I guess I expected more for what ended up costing ov24 bucks for lunch with a lemonade. But the friend that I was with- it's one of her favorite places. So, different strokes, etc. I will take a pass next time. Pros: Portions are big Cons: Limited choices, overpriced, left with a stomach ache, the parking lot is annoying more

MMMM mmmmm MMMMM!!! So good! 7/2/2006

Killer Shrimp rocks. The servers are always attentive and the shrimp is always yummy. The sauce is to die for. Once you try it once, you'll definitely want to go back. It is craving-inspiring. Pros: Great shrimp, very good service more

It's the cajun broth to die for 7/1/2006

I love Killer Shrimp! I often take it home with me from work, but will also commute the 10 miles from my house when I get a KS jones on a weekend. I love the the food and the staff. The way the shrimp is cooked in the spicey creamy broth is fantastic, and I've moved from just the shrimp and bread to shrimp and pasta which comes with bread anyway. That and a good glass of wine is fine anytime. Pros: Servers' body art, shrimp broth, good wines Cons: Sometimes they short you on the shrimp (depending upon season) more

Cheap Good Eats 6/19/2006

Incredibly cheap REAL food. Food is fresh. If you get stuff from the hot trays, you're in for a real bargain. Ordering special dishes from the menu costs more, but works well if you're a picky eater. Pros: Good Cheap Fresh Food Cons: Take out really, because the decor is pretty gross more

KILLER PLACE!!!!!! 4/11/2006

When I'm in town, I MUST have my fix of Killer Shrimp, otherwise I'd go home completely unsatisfied. I absolutely LOVE this place! I'm all about having only 3 things on the menu. I always get the bowl of shrimp/broth and a side of bread. I don't need the rice or noodles to satisfy me. I've never complained about the service or the music. I'm not there for that anyway. When food is this good, nothing else matters. I'm much too concerned with soaking bread in the best broth I've ever had (seriously), peeling tails off of suculent shrimp, savoring every bite, and washing it all down with an ice cold beer. If you're a true shrimp lover who likes to get a little messy and doesn't mind spice, then you wouldn't complain about this place. We all have our own opinions, but mine is the best :) Pros: shrimp, broth, bread Cons: not important, at, all more

what do you expect?? 2/18/2006

i have been to killer shrimp many times, as it is one of my favorite easy and casual restaurants. therefore, i was shocked at the bad reviews on this site! first of all, it seems that everyone with a negative opinion had ordered the shrimp with bread--a silly choice, for all the options come with free bread. simply save up the extra $3 for rice or pasta, and you will not be disappointed. the sauce does tend to vary--spicer on some days (the way i like it) and more buttery on others. it is always good, though. and the portions are huge--they easily last me 2-3 meals each. no, this is not ground-breaking haute cuisine--if that's what you want, go someplace else. this is simple food in large portions for a good deal. if you love shrimp, i highly recommend! Pros: shrimp, shrimp, shrimp Cons: no reservations more

Yuck! 1/30/2006

I'm the kind of person that loves holes in the wall - the kind of places where you go for the food and not the ambience. I also LOVE shrimp and seafood, so I thought this would be a great place to go. So wrong! I ordered the shrimp and bread (it's one of maybe 4 choices). The bread was nothing to write home about; I had thought since it's integral to the meal, it would be really good, but no. However, the shrimp in a spicy red sauce was really bad. The idea of the meal was a good one, but the reality of it was that all I tasted was spice and a whole lot of rosemary. I'm so not going back. Pros: No wait, Ambience Cons: Food, Bad Value more

Hated it!!! 1/20/2006

My boyfriend and I went there one evening. The food was average, however, the service was the worst I've ever experienced. The waitress was outright rude. After she brought the food she did not come back to our table, not even to bring the check. She walked by several times attending to the table beside us, but totlally ignored us for no apparent reason. We asked other servers for assistance and they were also less than helpful. We had to go to the front counter to get our check and pay the bill. We asked to make a complaint with the manager and they claimed that he or she would not be there until the following week. Cons: worst service ever more

What a great date place 10/11/2005

Before my husband and I got married her took me to Killer Shrimp I thought it was a wierd name for a resteraunt But in fact it was a great place, good foor, great prices, and love the atmosphere. I now live in Orange County and have to comute. Wish they would open one out here. But it is still worth the drive!! Pros: FOOD, PRICE, ATMOSPHERE Cons: THE DRIVE TO L.A. more

The one and only 9/8/2005

My sister-in-law introduced me to Killer Shrimp about 5 years ago. It truly is the best shrimp I have ever had. There are others that try to imitate, but they can't compare. One of my favorite restraunts in Cambria even has a similar dish, with patio seating and an ocean view. Still I'd rather have Killer Shrimp. It is so great that my sisters-in-law and myself make regular pilgrimages from the IE all the way to Marina Del Rey on a monthly basis just for Killer Shrimp. The only thing we have decided is missing is margaritas. Don't like beer or wine, but a nice cold margarita would set the spicy shrimp off great. Go first thing for lunch to avoid the crowds. Cons: parking more

Not all that it's hyped to be, but worth a try 3/29/2005

Less is more just might not be enough for this no edible frills dining experience. Simply put, the menu consists of the signature dish (for which the restaurant is named) served with your choice of French bread, angel hair or white rice. Succulent shrimp are boiled and served in a hot broth in addition to your carb of choice. Though the shrimp were plump and sweet, less praise can be given to its killer companion. The melding of butter, white whine is almost always perfect, but my portion was overloaded with mounds of herbs, gobs of chopped garlic and a little too much chili pepper. The broth definitely cant stand alone on its own flavor and too much of it can mask the natural goodness of the shrimp. If youre a shrimp enthusiast give it a try, but be wary to not let the broth kill your experience. Pros: good shrimp, interesting concept Cons: crowded weekends more

Not what I thought.. 2/27/2004

I was expecting something better than it was. It was good, kind of sloppy, I ordered with bread. The sauce was good but very spicy and needed a pitcher of water for the entire meal. My water glass was never refilled. Very plain and TOO dark. But it was good and I will go back. Pros: Inexpensive, flavorful Cons: , So So service, Bad parking & access more

Killer Place 2/13/2004

Killer Shrimp is a great place for simple food. The taste, on the other hand, is anything but simple. The place has a limited menu because it only serves shrimp. But that is their forte. The broth is very, very tasty, and having it with a side of rice or bread can warm the belly. The dishes are a great value also. Weekends can be busy, and I'm not sure if they take reservations but lines are usually long in the evening. I suggest going for lunch instead, and then take a nice walk in Marina Del Rey. I usually try and visit whenever I am in Southern California! Pros: Inexpensive Cons: , Limited Seating Space more

Pure delight. 11/7/2002

I was expecting the bowlful of messy shrimp. I was expecting the spicy, garlicky, brothy sauce (and the subsequent addiction that the editorial review spoke of.) I was expecting to dive in and get messy for about fifteen minutes. Happily, all of the above was true. I was NOT expecting the dessert, which is one of the greatest desserts I've had in town, topped with the best fresh whipped cream I can remember. I could have done without the R&B/hip-hop blaring over the room, but other than that, I can't find anything to complain about. The entire night went by too fast, but it was a delight from start to finish. A new favorite, definitely. Pros: Shrimp, Dessert, Simplicity Cons: Music more

Good idea which could be executed better 9/19/2002

The concept here is terrific. They only have 3 items on the menu, shrimp with bread, rice, or pasta. Rich and I both chose the shrimp with bread which is really just a big bowl of shrimp in a spicy broth and a colander full of all the bread you can cram into your face. The problem with a single-dish concept like this, is that the single dish had better be absolutely incredible. We found the shrimp here to be good, but not great. The sauce was spicy but without any complexity. It needed salt or perhaps further reduction to bring out some other flavors. On the whole, we enjoyed our meal, and the service was friendly if a little slow. Bottom line - if you only have one thing on the menu, it should be truly ""killer."" This didn't really rate more than manslaughter. Pros: Good concept, Friendly service Cons: Strip mall location more

Sit down and eat 6/2/2002

With all of the nutty, shee-shee places in Los Angeles, it's great to have a little simplicity for once. 3 items on the menu, all of them involving a big bowl of tasty shrimp. Eat, eat, eat. Yeah, the location stinks (upstairs in a 2-story strip mall) and the decor is non-existent. But who cares? The food is cheap and fun. Great date material as long as you have a fun adventurer with you! Pros: Sipler menu, great food, cost Cons: location, decor more

Don't Let the Name Fool You 6/2/2002

People either love it or hate it. The menu consists of three items: shrimp with noodles, shrimp with rice or just a basic shrimp dish with bread to dip in the sauce. Unless you enjoy having your hands smell like garlic for a week, don't get the latter. You have to peel the shells off yourself, even though the dish is already bathing in buttery garlic sauce. It's gross. The other two dishes offer shrimp that's already peeled, which is nice. However, for the price (around $17), the food just isn't that good. The sauce is very ordinary -- just a basic butter and garlic conconction that Sizzler could probably equal. Pros: nice location Cons: unimaginative food, peel your own food, generic sauce more
