Don't Use This Company 8/31/2011

These people will lie to you and you will end up paying far more in charges then you are told in the beginning. Then they will show up on a Sunday evening at 8pm with two small guys to unload your stuff in the dark which will take 3 hours so that you make a really good impression on your new neighbors (dripping sarcasm here). And when you try to resolve the issue you will be told that you are wrong and they will back pedal and rewrite history so that you are screwed. DON'T USE THEM. And I write this all over a pittance simply because of the way they treated me and spoke to me. more

Golan's Holds Good Hostage 11/24/2010

I cannot be emphatic enough in urging you NOT to use this company. The move was absolutely traumatic. I have moved a dozen times and NEVER had such an awful experience. They did an in-home estimate and then got our things on the truck, had my husband sign the "binding" contract and called us a week later from the road demanding almost $2000 because they said we were over the weight they estimated. Yes, they held our items hostage. I called to speak with several people, including the cokpany owner. He yelled at me and told me if I wanted to see my things agin, I would pay. Furthermore, theyv tried to insist that we pay in CASH so that we couldn't dispute the charges. Finally, my husband said, "Fine. keep it! We will NOT give you an additional $2000 in cash to get our things back." They relented about that but still demanded the credit card fee, which I DID dispute. When the crew then arrived, they began to insist again on cash payment before unloading the truck. I had to actually call the Dekalb County Police Department to get them to unload the truck! Clearly in the wrong and being instructed by the police that they couldn't force us to give them cash for OUR belongings when we hada signed contract indicating that they'd already been paid in full PLUS almost double, the crew guys decided they would unload the truck despite their boss's long-distance instructions. Then, they apologized to us and said how much they hated working for this company. The guy who was the helper (not the driver) was near tears and kept swearing (in Spanish) about how he was going to quit and wouldn't keep doing this to people. We disputed the charges and Golan's took forever to respond. Then they sent a doctored invoice to Discover cards. We began to pursue this through the Illinois Attorney General but finally just gave up--even though the AG's office was very supportive--because it was such a time sink and we were moving to start new jobs and spending so much time on this nonsense. These folks DO NOT deserve to stay in business. The exact date of drop-off may be slightly off as it's been awhile but they were definitely late. My in-laws were visiting and so apalled that THEY wrote letters to the AG and DOT. They even spoke with the drivers about their moral responsibilitties. That's how bad it was. BUYER BEWARE!!!!There are too many decent companies out there to deal with these crooks! more

Rude Movers 10/12/2010

I recently used Golan's for the second time. My first experience was very good, however almost a year to the day later my second experience was horrible. From the minute the movers came they were rude to me and my family. They kept telling us that this move would take much longer than my last move because I had bought more furniture (which I hadn't) after a quick call to Golan's headquarters...their story quickly changed and they denied saying that the needed extra time. While they were rude and I felt they tried to take advantage of us, the worst part is they brought in one of my dressers with all the stuff contained in it dumped out and they lost an important religious artifact that they refused to take the blame for. While they were able to finish the move in a timely manner (thanks to me calling and complaining), the way I was treated by them was horrible and I would not use them again. more

Never Again! 1/13/2010

My girlfriend recommended this place and I could slap her now...lol. When I called to make my reservation I talked to Matt and questioned the reviews I had read because the majority of them were not good. He said "look we do a million moves a year there is bound to be some errors". Not so much what he said, but how he said it. I should have known at that time to not use them. I agree with others in that they raise the quote once they have your stuff. Also they charge you for rolls of tape that are not completely used. Only one guy out of 4 spoke English. I should have raised a stink but by the end of the move I was so damn mad and aggravated I let it go. But now I shall call the BBB and notify them. I would NEVER EVER recommend this company to anyone. I still shake my head on how really awful they were. Pros: None Cons: Everything more

DANGER, DENGER, DENGER 12/16/2009

Golan's is awful. Do not let them (movers) touch your stoffs. They'll distroy everything, even your house, if you let them. Do not leave your stoffs in golan's storage. You will lose a lot of them, and the over stoffs you'll get back in very bad condition. PLEASE READ THIS MASSAGE BEFOR CALLING golan's. YOU'LL LOSE A LOT IF YOU GONNA CALL THEM more

buyer beware- Golans Moving!!!!!! 11/25/2009

Buyer beware- GOLANS MOVING!!!! I had the worst experience with Golan's moving company. They charged me extra for moving insurance and when they damaged my new 400.00 table they prolonged a 6 month "investigation" resulting in a "take it or leave it" 50.00 "release of liabilty". Golan's has been nothing but short and rude when iT came to resolving my issue. Pros: none Cons: damaged furniture more

Never again 3/24/2009

I have used Golan's twice but after my last experience I will never use them again and will warn anyone away from using them. They quoted me a price of $400-$500 to move the furniture from my one bedroom from one side of Lakeview to the other. Once they had all of my things on the truck, I was informed that the cost would actually be $750 and that I needed to give them a credit card to pay or else they would not unload my things. They threatened to take my stuff and put int in storgage, with me being billed for the storage, until I paid their inflated price. When I called the office to complain, I was told the longer I argued the more the move would cost me because the movers were hourly. I ended up paying the bill so that they would unload my truck. And then promptly reported them to the B B B and the state's consumer protection agency. Golan's did give me a refund once I got the B B B involved. DO NOT USE GOLANS. DISHONEST, POORLY RUN COMPANY. Pros: gave me a refund once I contacted the B B B Cons: do not honor the quote, slow, dishonest more

Barefoot movers, crushed and wet boxes 12/2/2008

Golan's is awful. We moved from Chicago to Washington DC and 5 of our boxes arrived wet. WET! How do boxes that are supposed to be on a truck arrive wet? Customer service was at Golan's was very hands off after pickup; I was emailed a link describing the process of how to file a claim. No personal contact whatsoever. Also, to file a claim with Golan's you have to use a third party company. When the movers arrived -- several hours late -- they barely spoke english. One was barefoot. Several of our items, in addition to water damage, were broken or missing. The movers accidentally left a shipping schedule of all the deliveries they were making on their trip, and it turned out our stuff had traveled from Chicago to Georgia to Florida to South Carolina and to North Carolina before showing up in DC. I'm guessing that's what helps them keep costs low, but also contributed to the crushed, wet boxes that held our belongings. Pros: Seemed cheap but reasonable. Customer service was good at beginning Cons: Significant damage. Poor scheduling. Customer service was hands-off and unconcerned once they had our stuff. more

Slow movers, huge price diffrence. 10/23/2008

Be careful, you get one price when they come to do an estimate and it will change on the day of the move. They estimated my move at $850 and the final cost came to be over $1300. Not a good business practice, I would not use them again. more

Rude consultant (Matthew Kischuk) - eager to help, poor customer service skills when canceling 8/11/2008

I had a moving moving consultant named Matthew Kischuk, who was rude and sarcastic. I sent an email saying I was shopping around and had found a better rate with another company, and he replies "Well I wonder why their rates are lower. Good luck your reservation has been canceled." Now I'm really glad I'm getting a different mover instead of doing business with this moron. more

Best movers I've ever had 4/30/2008

I've used 4 movers in the past 5 years, and Golan is BY FAR the best. They called before they came, arrived when they said they would, and were very polite and professional. Like most movers, they charge by the hour, but they are EXTREMELY FAST at loading up the moving truck. Before I could blink my eyes, half of my furniture was already loaded. They are very very fast. They are also extremely careful with my furniture, and this is the first time that nothing was broken. In the past, movers have broken things like a mirror or a chair, but Golan did not break a thing. They had to carry my heavy furniture up three flights of stairs, and they never complained once. I asked them if they wanted to stop the clock and take a break, but they said no. They are also very reasonably priced. They charge for 3 guys what other places charge for 2 guys. Overall, they were very professional, polite, and fast. They are the best movers I've ever had. Pros: Reasonably priced, FAST, professional, polite, careful with furniture more

Does not live up to previous reputation; tries to cheat customers out of valid claims 1/30/2008

I paid Golan's to move me cross-country from Chicago. This included insurance coverage of $60,000 with a $500 deductible. They damaged and/or lost a lot (about 10%) of my boxes and pieces of furniture. This negligence included refusing to crate items, taping to bare wood, smashing boxes, ripping shelves out of bookcases, destroying patio goods and hiding damages. They initially *admitted* their negligence. I have spent 3 months filing claims with Golan's, providing photos, details, etc. Now they won't pay to repair or replace all these broken and lost items. This is a big difference from my experiences with them for local moves, when they were good. I don't know if things have changed or what, but, I would urge others to be very careful. Pros: Showed up, used own truck Cons: Broke items, lost items, will not honor insurance contract more

Worst customer service and terrible company 10/23/2007

I have had a terrible experience. The movers destroyed 2 items, and $850 table and a $300 wine fridge. The claims analyst is not friendly and deemed that my items are worth $60, I bought $5000 worth of insurance on move day. I would never recommend Golan's to anyone. Terrible company to deal with. Cons: broken furniture, rude customer service, unresponsive more

WORST MOVERS EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8/19/2007

This was by far the WORST moving experience I have ever had. I move a lot and these movers milked the clock BIG TIME. It took them 5 hours to move a 1 bedroom apartment a 1/2 mile. I had to chip in and help to try and save myself some money. I have filed a complaint with the management but of course have gotten no where with them. I am noticing damage to several pieces of furniture but at this point I feel there is no point in trying to get anything from this company. This company is TERRIBLE and I would NEVER recommend anyone use them. Pros: they showed up Cons: everything after them showing up was a DISASTER more

Movers with Talent 1/5/2007

My family and I moved on that awful blizzardy day on December 1. I got a few phone calls from concerned family and friends about having to move on that day. Golan's arrived EARLY! This was a big move. I'm talking piano, tons of books, and sets of china beyond furnishings for a family of four. We had put some things into Golans storage prior to the move. They had all of that already loaded into a truck when they arrived. They wrapped soft furnture in plastic and tape so that it wouldn't get wet or torn. They wrapped harder furniture so that it wouldn't get marked up. They moved very quickly. They took directions. They were easy to communicate with and beyond cooperative. This was destined to be a stressful move due to the weather. Thanks to Golan's it really wasn't. I can't rave enough. Their prices are also competitive. They did a completely accurate estimate prior to the move as well. Our piano was in storage and is in our new home, still in tune and in perfect shape. Pros: Fast, efficient, polite, thorough more

An Excellent moving experience, Golans 11/20/2006

The folks at Golans were very nice all around. The 'phone' service was great, everyone i spoke to was able to address my questions and concerns. On the move day, the items were protected and moved quickly. At the new house, they put the crib together, and made sure boxes were in the correct room. I have used other moving companies, but Golans seemed to be on a differtent level professionally. more

Great! 4/27/2006

Golan's came to pack our truck for a move out of town. They were great with our stuff. They were also very efficient (which was great, since they charged us per hr). Pros: Professional, Speedy, Knowledgable Cons: Costly more

Great sales people, that is it. 8/22/2005

We hired Golan's for an out of town move. The people that picked up the stuff were very good, a crew of 8 people wrapped and picked things up in a very professional manner. However, as the stuff came in to my new place, I could not beleive the damage done to the move! First, for all they only sent two people to unload the truck. All the boxes were smashed, despite the FRAGILE signs, or the insurance that we had paid for some items! Even heavy pieces of furniture were damaged! We are still waiting for their response on the issue. But if you value your stuff, I would recomment to do it your self instead. Pros: Pick up schedule Cons: Careless handling, No customer service more

Great Job! 5/13/2003

I've moved more times than I care to remember, but the time that Golan's moved me was the easiest! The guys were on time, friendly, quick and I've never had movers take such good care of my things. They took all the knobs off my dressers and armoire so they wouldn't get damaged, they wrapped all of my furniture in padding, they helped set up some furniture without my having to ask and they got the job done quickly. The person who reviewed them before me seems to have had a bad experience, but in Golan's defense, it sounds like they were willing to repair the damage. I guess it could depend on which guys handle your things. Luckily, my experience was great. They were recommended to me by a friend and I have recommended them to many other people as well. Pros: quick, friendly, careful more

RIPPED OFF 12/1/2002

We used Golan to move from east Lakeview to northwest Lakeview. At the advisement of our Golan rep, we bought "mover's insurance" with a $500 deductible The movers BENT a 30 day-old $1500 king size bed, cracked a $3000 cherry entertainment center, and misc. other damage. We filed a claim and got ZIP--the insurance was "repair first" and they claimed they could repair it all for less $500. I wouldn't recommend Golan to my worst enemy. Cons: crooks, lots of damage, rip off more
