Mateo is an awesome stylist! 2/3/2012

Mateo cut my hair for almost four years while I lived in Spokane. He knows how to work with thick, curly hair which is a major plus in my book. My hair is not the easiest to work with! He was always friendly and conversational and really took into account what was going on in my life - all while cutting my hair! Plus, anytime I'm back in Spokane, I make sure to set up an appointment with him. A stylist you'll travel for? Yep! He's great! more

Mateo Balmes is the BEST!!! 2/3/2012

Mateo is great at what he does, and will go to any length to make sure his clients are happy. When I first met Mateo I immediately learned what a kind and genuine person he is. On his spare time I have seen him come into the coffee shop where he does research on hair and different techniques he can use, showing me his dedication and passion for his work. When I went in to see him I felt at ease and comfortable with telling him what I wanted, and then asked him his personal opinion which he was more than happy to share with me. I now see Mateo regularly for a hair cut and coloring. I have always been happy with his work. :) Thank you Mateo for sharing your talent, your time, and warm conversation! more

Mateo is fantastic! 2/1/2012

Mateo is by far the best stylist I have ever been to. He has done my hair for 5 years and I have never been unhappy. His personality, ability to know exactly what I want and his capabilities in styling make him irreplaceable. Every appointment that I have gone to with Mateo has been the best appointment. He can read my mind without me saying a word, his scalp and neck massage make me forget my worries and he is simply the best. You will never be disappointed with Mateo, make the appointment... you will appreciate not having to worry about your hair turning out ""right"" ever again. more

Mateo and Department Z are simply the best 2/1/2012

Mateo is hands down the best stylist in Spokane. After wandering from salon to salon for years, unsatisfied with other stylists, I met Mateo. I have now been going to Mateo for 4 years, and I have never once been dissatisfied with his work. He has amazing stylistic ideas when I am looking to change my look, but I usually just tell him, ""lets do the usual"", and without explanation he knows what to do. Mateo is kind and attentive, and we are never short for conversation. Each appointment comes with the most delightful and relaxing head and shoulder message as well. Mateo does it right, and he makes sure you love your cut and color before you leave. Mateo definitely has the knowledge and expertise to suit anyones stylistic needs. Go to Mateo once and you will keep coming back! Department Z is amazing too, a unique boutique salon located up the stairs from Zola's bar ( an amazing bar by the way). The salon is clean, modern, and has its own stylistic flare. The employees are talkative and extremely friendly. I have been to all of the salons in Spokane, and Dept. Z is my favorite. more

Mateo does amazing hair! 1/31/2012

I am always impressed by Mateo when I come in for a haircut starting by the way he seems to understand exactly what I'm looking to do with my hair even though I may not express it perfectly. He has innovative ideas to help give me the best hairstyle and always explains how I can achieve the same look in my every day life! Plus, there is a complementary neck and head massage for every client which just adds to the relaxed environment of Dept Z. He is very friendly and goes out of his way to make sure you like your cut/color before you leave the salon. If you let Mateo do your hair, you will not be disappointed!! :) more

I've been going to Mateo from Department Z for almost two years now and highly recommend making an appointment with him. I've been to a lot of hair dressers in Spokane and after my experience with him and the salon i refuse to go anywhere else.The environment of the salon is very comfortable, I'm always very satisfied with my cut and color, they have a great staff and they're well priced. GO! :) more

Style....Color.....Zoe and the staff at Dept. Z are the best! I tried nearly every salon in town before finding Zoe a couple of years ago and have not had a bad hair day since! Zoe is outstanding. more

Jessica is AMAZING! 10/28/2010

I was reffered to Jessica by a friend after I commented on how perfect her hair is. I am normally very picky so I have been nervous about trying a new salon. Jessica made all of my worries disappear! She was so kind through out the experience (she got me water and magazines right away) and did an amazing job on my hair! I am not the best at describing what I want and she somehow knew exactly what I was envisioning. She is incredable! Run-don't walk- to Jessica at Depatment Z!!!!!! more

Endless talent... 9/17/2010

After a slew of boring haircuts in Seattle, I decided to try Dept Z. during a recent trip to Spokane. Michael did a cut and color for me, and both turned out amazing; my hair transformed from a bland dishwater-colored bob into the platinum short crop of my dreams. Cheesy but true! Its been nearly three weeks and I still have people complimenting me daily. This man knows what hes doing - I can't wait to see him again! more

I feel like I struck gold!! I went to Zoe for a free consultation after having read all of the wonderful reviews on this site. She actually took the time to explain just what type of haircuts would work best with my hair type and with the shape of my face. I have never had anyone do that...let alone during a free consultation!! So, I made an appointment and have a lovely cut that is exactly what I wanted. Zoe also took the time to show me quick and stylish ways to fix my hair. Love her bunches!! more

Great Talent and Personality 5/14/2010

I moved up from California and was iffy about sylists in Spokane. Then, I found Mykul and he is a genius...he is so skilled and meticulous. I've taken some big risks with him and they have really paid off. I have never been so happy with a hair cut and color. The staff is always so professional and courteous, not to mention a blast to hang out with. This is truly money well spent, you won't be disappointed! more

The BEST salon in Spokane! 5/6/2010

Zoe is unbelievable with hair styles and most importantly color! Moving here from Chicago, I went through SEVERAL hair salons before I found Department Z. This is the best salon I've ever been to. Zoe has taken me from platinum to brunette and everything in between and my hair always remains healthy! She is cutting edge, but don't be afraid of that statement...I've watched her style hair on all ages and she listens to her clients, makes suggestions and in the end everyone walks out feeling and looking amazing. You must, must, must make an appointment with Department Z!! more

great hair care and style 3/31/2010

I love what Zoe does to my hair! She actually pays attention to me as a person, looking at my facial features to make me look as good as possible. Different from many others I've been to, even some of the priciest ones in Spokane. The others working there are all nice, friendly, do great neck massages, and take good care of you to make sure you're comfortable with hot tea, a good magazine to read, and anything else they can do. I won't go anywhere else now. Pros: kindness, artistic ability, head and neck massages,etc more

Best Style 3/27/2010

I had a great experience with Mykul and the staff at Dept Z and will continually go back. I have been looking for a new style for my curly hair for ages and Mykul was just what I was looking for. I don't think my hair has ever curled like this, and I can even wear my hair down for the whole day now without putting it up- a first for me! Mykul gave me great styling tips and offered that anytime I needed help to just stop in - I will never go anywhere else! more

The best overall hair experience in town (color/cut/style) 1/12/2010

Zoe has been my hair stylist for 9 years since I moved to Spokane. I was sure I would never find someone as good as my stylist in Seattle, I was wrong. I have never doubted her ideas on color/cut/style and have never been disappointed. I have people stop me and ask where I get my hair done! She is knowlegeable, professional, and always up on the latest looks. I would recommend her to anyone with the greatest of confidence. Her salon is a welcoming and relaxing place to visit. Best Designer! 12/9/2009

Michael Thomas is an artist, a designer of hair if you will. I give him an idea and then freedom with the scissors. I always feel beautiful when I leave Mikul's chair. Many of my friends go to Michael at Dept Z as well. He cuts everyone's hair different. Whether it's a trendy look or if you want something more conservative, he'll make you look and feel beautiful. Getting married? Go see Michael! Hair is the most important appointment on your wedding day, start it right by seeing Mikul. He went WAY above and beyond for me. I started my day with Michael, and he treated me like a princess! Isn't that how we all should feel on our wedding day? My husband actually introduced me to Michael, and his hair looks amazing after he's seen him. Send your man to Michael too! Pros: Michael Thomas is an Artist! Cons: None. more
