Best

We live close to this place and enjoy coming here when we want a quiet, low-lit environment in a restaurant with good food and a good beer selection. We get the chicken pot pie an...

Worst

We sat outside to avoid the musty smell from the bar. The server was attentive and the beer was cold. Pros: bread Cons: food is not fresh

Love the concept, disappointed by execution 4/7/2008

There are lots of interesting, delicious sounding items on the Bakehouse's menu. I loved the decor. Pros: decor was great, brats were tasty Cons: flavor of everything else. more

Go for the chicken fried steak 9/30/2007

The Bakehouse menu is way too ambitious. I oder one thing only here: the chicken fried steak. This is the best CFS in Austin and one of the better ones in Texas. The meat is real round steak, not cube steak, and the batter is good. Not perfect like my grandma used to make-but good. The cream gravy is perfect. Pros: Funky place with lots of Keep Austin Weird vibes. Cons: Funky place with lots of Keep Austin Weird vibes. more

Yuk! 9/9/2007

I signed onto Citysearch just so I could review this horrible establishment as my first message! Pros: Nothing Cons: Service, Ambience, FOOD! more

Great Breakfasts but other fare riskier 12/22/2006

I remember when they opened the Bakehouse. I had a birthday party here. I have seen so many waitresses come and go, but the quality and the comfortable casual feel remains. If you are hungry at breakfast, Carlos' favorite omelette cannot be beat. I do not have to eat again the rest of the day when I order this! Pros: varied menu, currently have good waitresses Cons: manager not accomodating, some apathetic employees more

FEEL FREE IF YOU LIKE YOU STEAK WITH A SIDE OF ECOLI 12/13/2006

the service was terrible ( maybey they think if you dine alone that you should be ignored). The food was bland , as well as not very fresh. nothing was hot or cooked to order. it was the only resturant that i ate at the whole day and so there was no doubt in my mind that it could have been then only place that made me spend the next day in a half hoovered by the toliet in pain. The food there gave me foodd poisonig. please take my advice. do not share the wealth. it was not worth the doctors visit the next day and the time and money lost due to poor food preperation. more

Terrible Service bland food. 8/4/2006

I am surprised to see this resturant with this high of a rating I hvae given the Bakehouse a try on 2 occasions and both time were pitiful. No only did the food give the impression it was microwave tv dinners, buit the service was lacking. Less than attentive servers and bored looking hosts topped off the expierence. Pros: Location Cons: Everything else. Food, Waitstaff, decor. more

Very average 6/27/2006

Not sure how this is rated so high. The food and service isn't anything special. The only advantage is that it's one of the few sit-down restaurants with a bar in the area. Hopefully more people will review this place and give it a more reasonable score. Pros: one of only a few restaurants in the area with a bar Cons: not really that great more

Disappointed after reading other reviews 6/23/2006

The restaruant left a lot to be desired after reading some of the other posts. I have to wonder how it could possible have rated so well after eating there. It was merely average and strictly, well... okay. Pros: Pleny of parking Cons: You can do so much better in Austin more

Great food - friendly efficient staff! 2/2/2006

My sweetie and I live in fear this place is going to go out of business one day - it's SO GOOD but never crowded! The far South Austin location is definitely off the typical tourist/hipster routes, which makes it a great little neighborhood secret for us, but I do worry that they aren't getting enough business which is why I'm posting. Pros: Very good parking, Great food, Excellent service Cons: None more

Love this place 7/14/2005

We've been eating there for over 10 years. We feel more comfortable there then any place in Austin. There just aren't many places in Austin where you can talk and be heard, and you can there. Pros: variety in menu, low prices, quality of food Cons: Only one location, waiting on Sunday more

Okay 4/22/2005

I decided to try Bakehouse after reading the positive reviews, and the prices seemed fair on their website. Their actual menu prices were slightly higher, but not unreasonable. The atmosphere is dark and feels old. However, the prices didn't seem expensive until we started eating. His hamburger was very bland, and my beef wellington was mediocre. My rice tasted like burnt butter. The horseradish sauce for the fries wasn't bad, but I didn't like any of the other food. Not a terrible experience, but not worth the drive in my opinion. I prefer Hyde Park Grill for the same type of food in this price range ($20-30 for 2). Pros: Not crowded Cons: Mediocre food more

Hidden Gem 2/8/2003

We've been going to the Bakehouse for about 7 years now, and it has always been great. Despite another reviewer's critique of some of the upper entrees, many of them are great - the special chicken is wonderful. I also like that you can get couscous as a side grain, and the desserts are out of this world. It does need a better decor and location, though! Pros: desserts, overall value Cons: decor / location more

Editorial
  • In Short
Upon first glance, the Bakehouse is a place you'd expect to find authentic American comfort food, not the wide array of international dishes the menu offers. But the variety...
