We sat outside to avoid the musty smell from the bar. The server was attentive and the beer was cold. Pros: bread Cons: food is not fresh

I've been eating here for about 5 years. I've liked everything I've tried in that time. Personal faves include the burgers, which are enormous (half pound) and well-prepared and run around $6. Almost the entire breakfast menu is under $6 and the portions are really astounding. Dollar for dollar, you can't get better food in South Austin. Also, the downright weird human potpourri of regulars (myself included) make the bar a fun place to hang out in the evenings. Bring a laptop, get some work done and eavesdrop on conspiracy theorists, all while noshing on the best fried pickles in town. Seriously, try the fried pickles Oh, and the staff. Most of them are funny, friendly people - all worth knowing. Oh, and the owner actually chips in around the place (which is refreshing to see). more

I'm always cautious when I peruse a menu and I see everything from cous cous to tuna steaks. That is my first clue to keep it simple. That is what I do here and I have had very good experiences every time I have been here. I have been here probably ten times in my six years in Austin and I have had a pleasant experience each off those. The service is def S. Austin and a tad slow, the waitresses are cool and will chat, and the prices are right. I think I keep coming back because they serve food til midnight and have a great burger and an epic chef salad. Their french fries are stupendous and they serve a great horseradish sauce to dip them in. A half order is all you need. Trust. The decor is quirky as all get out. There are globes and maps and weird paintings all over the place kinda giving the place a twilight zone feel. I'm okay with it. When I go there at 11 P.M. to get a burger, I'm halfway in the Twilight Zone already. more

The salad had home-made croutons and a radish in addition to cucumber and lettuce with what tasted like homemade Italian dressing. I tasted the gumbo, and it was delicious. The servings of chicken friend steak were enormous - plenty to eat there and bring home the rest. more

food tastes home cooked, baked goods are good, breakfast selection is excellent, but they tend to over cook the eggs. Best bread in town..Best coffee! more

they make the best liver and onions in the world. I am giving them a 5 star rating just for this dish because I've never had it prepared as well as the Bakehouse does it. If you like liver and onions, you have to try them at the Bakehouse. Their (thick cut) fries are also wonderful. The guacamole salad is fabulous too. Actually, their simple side salad is very nice because they make their own salad dressings and they are all yummy. Try their shrimp scampi. You won't be disappointed with that dish either. The Zucchini Tempura appetizer is great too. more

Outstanding service here. Sarah, Valerie, and Jamie are some of the best waitresses in the service industry. I've been in the industry for 10 plus years. My fav is the mushroom Swiss burger. For breakfast I recommend the veggie or florentine omelette. Very friendly atmosphere this keeps me coming back !!!! more

The complimentary bread is to die for, the house salad's were delicious, and we ordered the Wellington and Chicken fried steak....both of which were superb. It wasn't crowded and the service was fast. I will be back to try the German cuisine. more

Um the BEST pancakes ever!! I know Austin has a few other locations that claim best pancake. However I must disagree, I think the cakes at the Bakehouse are the best in the area. I've been here a few times and the staff is really friendly and courteous. Food is great and delicious. It sits off the roadway just a bit and is nestled in-between a couple of other businesses so you may pass it if you don't pay attention.\r \r They have something for everyone on their menu. Definitely a must on your Austin bucket list. more

I've only been there 4 times but the food is delicious and the waitresses are amazing. Today I came in with my boyfriend for brunch around 12:30... They were packed, but we were seated in a timely manner and were greeted right away. Our waitress was AMAZING! she was so attentative, and if we needed something she was there and back instantly. I've only had their breakfast but it is soo delicious and fresh. The pancakes are so tasty. I love it. We will definitely be going back often.. and hopefully to try the rest of the menu! more

Enjoyed a dinner at the Bakehouse with my mother. I had the Cantonese Stir Fry with beef. It was delicious. The vegetables were not overcooked and the ginger soy sauce was not too strong. Mother had the crab stuffed shrimp with side salad and sauteed squash. I tried one shrimp and thought it was a bit overdone. Her salad was large enough to share. The dressing she chose was an Italian vinaigrette - very good. The bread was moist and also delicious. I plan to go back to try some of the German dishes. And, I want to get some more quiche. I have had it in the past and really enjoyed it. more

I had the opportunity to eat at the Bakehouse during a recent golf trip to Austin. Chicken Pot Pie was awesome, I highly recommend it! It was so good I decided to come back for breakfast. The next morning they we're willing to ""build"" me an omelet that wasn't on the menu.\r \r The menu is huge and varied, I'm only sorry that I didn't get to try more things. That'll have to wait for the next trip to Austin. more

This is my favorite go to place. Good for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They are international...serving Italian, Mexican, Chinese, French,...and just plain old good American food. Chicken fried steak may be the best in Texas. Prime Rib excellant. Quiche even better. Pancakes are awesome, and desserts are to kill for. I have never had a bad meal here, and the prices are even better. This is a favorite of the locals. I have been eating here for 25 years. more

Upon first glance, the Bakehouse is a place you'd expect to find authentic American comfort food, not the wide array of international dishes the menu offers. But the variety...
