Exploitative practices 4/24/2008

They charged us $1000 per day just to keep our pet on a continuous IV drip of antibiotics, something that cannot conceivably cost them more than $50 per day.\r \r I get the sense that they realize that people have strong emotional attachments to their pets, and may very likely have no other places to take them for the level of care they need, so the vets here charge truly exorbitant fees. I do not see how they can claim nonprofit status when they charge this much - where does all the money go, if not to profits? more

wonderful care 4/21/2008

We took our cat to Angell Memorial Hospital for emergency surgery. The facility is spotless and beautiful. The staff is warm and caring. Our vet Dr. Shelley Smith was very knowledgeable and very empathetic. She called us several times to report on our cat's progress throughout the day. She was explained our options thoroughly and clearly. Unfortunately after complications our beloved kitty was too sick to undergo treatment. Dr. Smith was wonderfully kind to us as we sat together during our cat's last moments. I will return to the Angell Memorial to adopt and recommend this facility without hesitation. more

Great pet care 4/12/2008

I have found that Angell more than deserves their reputation as a first class vet hospital. They may cost more but they are non-profit and have incredible state-of-the-art equipment that you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere else. \r \r I can understand that some people may not feel they or their pets got the best care but if you're going to bad mouth a place and try to drag them through the mud, at least have the guts to put your name on your reviews. For all we know, you could be a disgruntled employee or simply someone holding a grudge. Own up to your comments. more

Rabbit Neutering 4/10/2008

Wouldn't recommend Angell Memorial Animal Hospital for Rabbit Neutering! Fees totaled over $600...I understand Angell Memorial Animal Hospital is a non-profit, but there has to be a limit to this. more

Angell Memorial Hospital 3/21/2008

Today my daughter called me all upset. Her five year old rabbit is in respiratory distress. She was told by our regular vet that she should take her rabbit directly to Angell Memorial. Before she was even seen she had to pay a $140.00 fee and I assume the rabbit was triaged and my daughter was told that the rabbit was stable at that time. I received a call from my daughter later that afternoon. She was trying to borrow $200.00 from her brother and then asked to speak to me. She would need a total of $846.00 up front in order to have tests done on her beloved pet. I asked to speak with the doctor who was discussing the case with my daughter. The vet said that the rabbit was in distress but doing well on oxygen. The vet wanted to do cultures, a chest x-ray and a CBC or complete blood count. I asked her for a potential diagnosis. She said the rabbit would need to be hospitalized and testing completed before she could give me a prognosis. When I tried to get more information, she told me s more

Angell Memorial Animal Hospital 3/19/2008

Like every other world class health care facility in Boston the quality of care that you will receive at Angell is dependent upon the individual doctor treating the patient. In my case, the veterinarian that I chose for my dog, "one of the biggest internists on the East coast," delivered care that was completely unacceptable to me. While he may be board certified, his clinical care standards were poor at best as he left both interns and his vet tech to manage the care of my very ill animal. Speaking to him directly was almost impossible and discussing the poor quality of care with him directly was pointless as he was already aware of his own limitations and made no apologies. Good clinical care begins with the art of "being present" of listening with both a sound mind and heart; good clinical care continues with clear and timely care instructions being given to the client; good clinical care ends with sound follow-up to insure care instructions are being met and that patient progress i more

Angell Memorial Medical Center is where I take all my dogs!!!! 2/13/2008

I have taken my 12 year old Sheltie to Angell for years. He has a primary care physician (Dr. Mazza) who sees him regularly and is VERY familiar with his health concerns. Angell is more pricey than local vets, but they are open 24/7 unlike local vets. Plus while an inpatient, people are there to care for your pet on the inpatient wards. My local vet left the hospital at 5:00p.m. and left my dog alone all night after surgery. He became very ill and that is when I first took him to Angell. Recently, I have acquired 2 new Sheltie Puppies and I also take them to Angell. Doctor Mazza sees them as well and is very thorough, very compassionate, very knowledgeable, and loves her job. You can just tell by the way she handles each pet. She is really easy to reach by having her paged and she always calls me right back. I had my older dog at the Emergency Room recently, and he was treated with respect, from the person who signed us in, all the way through. No payment in advance was even as more

Saved my dog's life 9/25/2007

My experience here could not have been better. I brought my dog here after days of not eating and lethargy and seeing other vets who just didn't know what was wrong with him. His paws and mouth were also cold. By the time I got him to Angell he couldn't stand up. They rushed out to take him to their ICU, the vet was so helpful and caring that she carried him since he wouldn't go on the stretcher (he is 50 pounds).\r They found that he has a rare disease that is usually not detected unless the dog (or person) goes into a crisis from it. He was having a crisis and by the time I got him there was going into Septic Shock. Due to their competence he was diagnosed with Addison's Disease and will now live a normal life. He made such a miraculous recovery that I was able to take him home the next night. He went from being hours from death to returning back to the lively, loveable dog that he is.\r I simply cannot thank the staff at Angell Memorial enough. If you are having an emergency more

A wonderful place providing compassionate, state-of-the-art care 9/2/2007

I brought my 10 year old Burmese to Angell 3 weeks ago when she had congestive heart failure. She was immediately wisked away to their ICU where she was stabilized and put in a cage with oxygen. When I was admitted, I was told that they had looked at her heart and she had restrictive cardiomyopothy, a disease I had heard of and knew would be likely to kill her in a matter of months. Their goal was to get her home so she would be in a loving environment and they encouraged me to take her home the next day after meeting with one of their cardiologists. The cardiologist worked with us for 3 weeks trying to stabilize Nina. She always returned my calls promptly and was careful to explain every choice to me so I could make good decisions. Yesterday, Nina stopped eating and drinking, became completely withdrawn and had labored breathing. Rather than take her back for more hospitalization, I took her to be euthanized at 2 AM. They handled this procedure with dignity and compassion. People com more

ABSOLUTELY DEPLORABLE! 8/14/2007

My experience here could not have been worse. I would recommend that anyone considering taking their beloved pet to this "laboratory" seriously reconsider. \r \r As the owner of 3 dogs and 7 cats, I have been to many veterinarians over the years, and have come to the conclusion that although veterinary medicine is in dire need of some sort of regulation (ie: reasonable & customary charges), neither I nor any pet have never been as mistreated by an organization as we were at the venerable Angell Memorial. My cat could not breathe & my vet suggested we take him to A.M. After a seriously long wait, he was seen by an intern who had no idea what was going on. After another wait, a new doctor arrived & determined what the problem was. He tapped the fluid out of his lungs & sent us home. I don't recall the total of this bill or the 5 or 6 subsequent office visit bills to tap the new fluid out of his lungs, but the outcome was that he needed surgury immediately if we wanted him to live. Liposuction for your wallet 5/4/2007

This place caused me more grief and frustration than I can describe. Their motto should be "kindness and caring for animals"...but cruelty to pet owners. The staff there is incredibly unprofessional.\r \r Summary: they repeatedly provided me with incorrect information, they don't let you talk to the people who make the actual decisions and give you the run around, they accuse you of cruelty to your animal when you question anything they do, and under the guise of providing "specialty care" they rack up your bill with unnecessary tests.\r \r When I took my cat into the ER, they told me his lab results were very abnormal. When I asked for the actual numbers the vet (an intern) got irritated with me and started pressuring me to just make a decision. I insisted on getting the information. She left and came back without the numbers and started verbally attacking me with "Do you want your cat to die!? If you take him AMA he'll die a painful horrible death!!" I calmly said I simply wanted the d more

The Finest Facility for the Care of Pets in New England 4/29/2007

The facility is so elegant, spotless and scent free that it is hard to believe one has entered an Animal Hospital. Clever architecture offers comfort to owners and pets. Dogs and cats have their own carefully marked, exceedingly clean waiting areas, with flat screen TVs! A bit of luxury, a pleasant surprise for those who anxiously await the medical staff. The Receptionists are courteous, attentive and clear in their directions. They appear to be well-aware of the difficulty of having a sick pet. Technicians quickly come out to assess your pet, soon thereafter followed by a Doctor. The Doctor leads you and your pet into an examination room. Your pet does not have to linger in the room waiting for the doctor. Much less stress for your pet. The doctor is clearly well trained. As she/he calmly examines and soothes your pet answers are provided for all your questions. If any blood work or x-rays need to be done, the doctor takes the dog to have the work done. One has been re-assured that all more

only place to go in an emergency 1/14/2007

Yes, I'm appalled by the expense and would always have to look elsewhere, EXCEPT in emergency cases. In such a case, then AMAH is the best place to go, especially for avian emergencies. I don't think Angell is set up financially for anyone who has a choice, but my parrot's life is worth ruining my bank account, I guess. more

Avoid if Possible 8/28/2006

I am sure they have very good doctors on staff specializing in unique areas of animal medicine. Pros: Open 24 hrs a day, specializes in a lot of unique animal care not found to many places, lots of parking. Cons: ER doctors not competent, office staff not pleasant, the wait is very long more

Money comes first here! 8/6/2006

We've had several bad experiences here when we've had to go for an ememgency after hours. Before the pet is even seen, you have to pay up front. The vets are nice, but forget the office staff. The vet gave the cat a rabies shot for free, but after we paid our bill, the person at the desk chased us down! Disgraceful! This was for a cat belonging to a group home for adults with special needs. more

Angell Memorial Hospital. 6/30/2006

I am sure it is a good hospital but the compassion level was not there for me by the emergency vet. She made a sarcastic comment to me during deciding to have my cat get invasive surgery that could cost 8,000. after I had already paid 1900. upon arrival. It was clear they were busy which I am sure they are but they should add in additional staff to deal with people who are faced with situation concerning doing a surgery with a "guarded" (whatever that means it didnt sound good" prognosis or eunthanisia.) I was given no guidance regarding the potential outcomes of various scenarious but that they would do the surgery if I wanted them to. I left there very confused about if I made the right decision and am tormented. more

Best Vet 11/14/2005

Though Angell Animal Medical Center is not located in a convienient spot for most Bostonians, it has simply the best care for animals available in the area. Angell specializes in emergency care, and the staff is well trained to handle even the most frantic pet owner. Its a little bit pricey to engage their services, but the staff at Angell is worth the few extra dollars so that you get the full benefit of their expertise. The Doctors here are very professional and the rest of the staff here is friendly and knowledgable. PROS: Great service, Friendly to you and pet CONS: Not best location more

Great Animal Hospital 9/6/2005

When our cat got a UTI, my roommates and I didn't know where to go. We called Angell and they told us to bring him in as soon as we could. Once we were there, they took the time to check him out. The vet explained everything, gave us options and answered every question we had. She also had tons of suggestions to prevent our cat from getting sick again. It was a bit expensive for the visit and the medications, but the care was great. I would feel comfortable calling in any time with questions or concerns. more

expensive but thorough 7/16/2005

Excellent animal hospital. The most comprehensive I've ever seen. This place is so huge, it's just like a normal human hospital. They are expensive though and will charge you for every little thing they do. They also seem to really want to take your money. E.g. they wouldn't prescribe me rabbit eye drops over the phone, they made me schedule a $95 emergency appointment. This is even though I've been in several times before for the same exact problem for the same exact solution. They are very good for exotic pets such as rabbits, ferrets, etc. I would recommend a neighborhood vet for your cats and dogs though. (Cheaper, more personalized service.) If you have an emergency, deifnitely come here. more
