Peter Luger is the gold standard for New York steakhouses. The ambiance is unfancy--more an upscale beer hall than white cloth restaurant. You order steak (for 2,3,4, etc.) and then you gorge. Don't fill up on the excellent onion rolls. Keep in mind that reservations are hard to come by (though you can slip in during off hours and at lunch) and that you may end up waiting at the bar for a bit. Also remember: cash only, unless you're such a regular you get the Peter Luger credit card. Worth a splurge. The only reason it doesn't get five stars? Well, it's not cheap. (The burger at lunch is a bargain.)
