Best

This is the one and only place I will go for a steak. I save up for a little then splurge on the porter house and a few glasses of Cabernet. Yes that is a good comination :)

Worst

Maybe it was the build up from everybody telling me if you like steak you have to go to Peter Luger's. Well it wasn't worth it. The steak was good but I've had much better. I'v...

The #1 steakhouse in NY... 10/3/2006

...is not in Manhattan; it's in Brooklyn. Right over the Williamsburg Bridge. You already know what I'm going to say... it's Peter Luger's. This is not your fancy, trendy, upscale type of place. It resembles a local pub more than the most trusted name in steak. The service isn't particularly wonderful - the waiters are surly at best. Bring a group of people and a fair bit of cash, as they don't take credit cards. I'm partial to the Bacon strips at first, and my father (a long time Luger's patron) goes for the lamb chops with the same tireless review that they are so tender they almost melt in your mouth. Asking for a menu is unnecessary. Order by the number in your party (e.g. Steak for 4) and wait with bated breath for the best steak you'll ever have. You can also get their house brand steak sauce at several supermarkets in the area - you'll never use A-1 again. Just don't ask surrounding steakhouses if they have Luger's sauce for their steak. The don't think it's as funny. more

Best Steak House on the Planet 4/12/2006

Go here, order the steak. It's really that simple. Don't ask for a menu -- you will only annoy the waiter. If you wanted a burger, you could have stayed in Manhattan. But for steak, this Brooklyn establishment is the first and last name in dining. The decor is rough, manly, with dark wood finish and big heavy tables. The waiters are indeed brusque, as some have noted, but only to those who cannot answer a simple question: "How would you like your steak?" The arrival of the steak, though understated, is truly a magical moment. Cooked perfectly, it is a hefty slab of fine meat, sizzling in delightful juices. There may be fries on the plate as well, which are quite good, but not much else. Anything else would be a distraction from what could be the best steak you will ever have. more

Arrogance abounds, but so does great food 2/22/2006

This is a streotypical New York steak house, meaning that you get a heap of NY attitude with your meal. I jsut ignore it because the food is good, but my friend (who make me look like a puddy cat) was rady to take someone's head off. So be prepared for the 'tude, and enjoy your food. more

An Institution in steak 1/18/2006

Peter Luger's is always rated as one of the top steak houses in the world. The original is in Brooklyn and the Great Neck location has been there for many, many years. Luger's is an old fashioned, German Style steakhouse. Steak is served for one, two. or more. No different cuts, it is just steak, The potatoes and creamed spinach are great, but the star of the show here is the steak. They start with the finest meat, cook it at high temp, so it is seared. sliced and served. The desserts all have a whipped cream called schlag on them. The food is really good. The wait staff who pass their jobs on to kinfolk when they die, are professional, but can sometimes by surly. Until you have eaten here, you have not reached the top of the steakhouse world. more

Steak Galore 1/15/2006

Now if you are looking for steak, no Manhattan establishment can compete with this Williamsburg restaurant. Not only is the steak to die for but the side dishes are some of the best, you want to eat them alone. The cost does run on the expensive side, but you need a treat this is the place to go. more

A New York classic 9/17/2005

Peter Luger is the gold standard for New York steakhouses. The ambiance is unfancy--more an upscale beer hall than white cloth restaurant. You order steak (for 2,3,4, etc.) and then you gorge. Don't fill up on the excellent onion rolls. Keep in mind that reservations are hard to come by (though you can slip in during off hours and at lunch) and that you may end up waiting at the bar for a bit. Also remember: cash only, unless you're such a regular you get the Peter Luger credit card. Worth a splurge. The only reason it doesn't get five stars? Well, it's not cheap. (The burger at lunch is a bargain.) more
