Editorial review from Citysearch 12/2/2012

Worst service ever!! I work in the restaurant business and have Never been treated so poorly!! Marrisa and Yuri need to understand Customers pay your bills therefore You should treat them with kindness!! Both girls had the busboy wait on us because for whatever reason they did not want to wait on us, I have been to Zapata many times and have Never had any problems but today was a different story. Both girls were too busy on their phones and watching tv to care about customers. Last time I checked Customer is King! This kind of horrible service will ruin your restaurant so check your servers Zapata!! more

Maybe the cook (whom was great) went south, but now... nah. 5/13/2012

Zapata has dropped a notch in the last 12 months, maybe the cook went back to Mexico, really! The Sopa Azteca was mediocre, at best it would be a good tomato based soup. Then the Chile Relleno was undercooked making the poblano chile still firm, needing a knife to cut through it. I have been here before and told others about... this time I would tell them 'look around' ... more

Probably the most authentic Mexican food in Atlanta 7/10/2011

This small but charming restaurant in historic Norcross serves up some of the freshest, unique and authentic Mexican food you will ever get in Atlanta. The complementary chips and salsa are delicious, fresh and thoroughly addictive. The menu is diverse with some unusual offerings (molcajetes cooked in a lava pot) along with what you would normally expect to find in a Mexican restaurant (i.e., fajitas, quesadillas.) My steak fajitas were great and every other member of my large party loved their meals as well. The only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars is that service was slow and the temperature in restaurant was a bit uncomfortably warm. more

The BEST Mexican food EVER 4/24/2010

I had always thought that a quesadilla was a quesadilla; and that you couldn't do anything to make a quesadilla extraordinary. Well, I stand corrected and duly humbled. The Picadillo Quesadilla at Zapata is simply amazing. And the Pescada Quinta Roo (the red snapper filet in a chipotle mango sauce) will teach you what ""awesome"" really means! I have eaten here several times now; and have always been enraptured with the food. Try their hearty sopes too! Pros: Even basic items like quesadillas are just extraordinary! more

Best Mexican Food ever! 4/24/2010

When I see that even a restaurant like this gets some negative reviews, I begin to lose all hope for the human race. Really, the food here is absolutely fantastic. The Picadillo Quesadilla at Zapata is simply amazing. And the Pescada Quinta Roo (the red snapper filet in a chipotle mango sauce) will teach you what ""awesome"" really means! Amazing Food! 10/18/2009

So, my husband and I went last night to Zapata in downtown Norcross. This ws our first time in the new location. What struck me as soon as we walked in was that the decor had gone down. On P'tree Pkwy they had great little tables, chairs and decoration on the walls. At this new place the tables and chairs were industrial grade cafeteria style. I'm not sure why they didn't transfer their old furniture and decor from the the previous restaurant location but clearly they must have their reasons. The menu looked as if it had changed. They brought s chips & salsa which was something I don't remember from before. It scared me for a minute because I thought ""uh oh"", they've started catering to people who want a regular Mexican ""El Azteca"" dinner. We were ahppy to see our favorites were still on the menu. The Mole is to die for! Do you know how difficult it is to make Mole? And to do it well? It is amazing! The restaurant is one of our favorites. We absolutely love it and will return again and again....I hope that they do upgrade their furniture. It was so much nicer before. Pros: Mole! Cons: Tables and Chairs more

Not as good as it was 9/23/2009

First - ordered 2 top shelf margaritas with two different types of tequila. From our table, I saw the waiter (I don't think he was a bartender) fill two glasses 90% full with some sort of mixer and then top it off with one of the tequilas. He started to pour the same tequila into the second glass when he saw me watching and then hurried over to tell me they were out of Hornitos. I ordered a different tequila, but both margaritas tasted exactly the same and mostly like sweet and sour mix. When I ordered a second margarita I asked for Herrudura and he told me that they were out of that, but he had Hornitos.(?) Pros: Interesting food Cons: Bad service more

Great venue for rehearsal dinner 9/7/2009

We had our rehearsal dinner last month at Zapata in downtown Norcross and the food/ atmosphere was exceptional! I would highly recommend using it for parties of 70 or less, great value for your dollar at this upscale authentic Mexican gem. The owner (Mark) is very easy to work with and even arranged live music for no additonal cost... more

My Favorite 5/23/2009

This is hands down my favorite Mexican restaurant in the Atlanta area. Delicious and authentic. It is hard to find great mole and they have the best in my opinion. Pros: Best Enchiladas De Mole more

Real Food...Really Mexican 1/22/2009

I really like Zapata. I usually take out lunch due to my hectic schedule but I have dined there for lunch and dinner and have always had a good experience. The pomegranate margaritas are delicioso!! Pros: Tasty food, artsy atmosphere, fair prices Cons: Limited menu--I would like to see some new dishes added more

Don't eat here if it takes more than an hour 11/14/2008

I just had lunch at Zapata and was asked to leave after an hour and 10 minutes because they wanted to give the table to people waiting. I understand turning tables, but interrupting my conversation with a friend was ridiculous. I will never eat there again. more

My favorite restaurant in Atlanta area 9/28/2008

Zapata is a breath of fresh air -- this is REAL mexican food. Don't expect Taco Bell or Fronterra-like options here. I have tried nearly everything on the menu and I like the Crepas Poblanas the most. Pros: Friendly Service, Awesome food Cons: Often hard to get a table during lunch! more

it will have been the best restaurant ever. the margaritas WILL be delicious. 9/20/2008

i will have walked into zapatas with great anticipation and of course hunger. the service will have been very prompt and corteous. our table will be no where near the kitchen door, it will not wobble and it won't be even the slightest bit sticky, like other restaurant tables. the table itself will be assembled by a craftsman and he will have used the finest cherry woods and richest mahoganys available. the lighting will most likely have been done by burt's lighting inc. but i wll have not been able to tell till i got home later that evening and did an extensive internet search. but, after having done the search i will have learned that zapatas did indeed employ burts lighting inc, due to there well known and sought after name in the lighting and enviance for restauants. Pros: a complete absence of flurgery, and a surplus of verblungent Cons: several, but i believe it was a work release program more

Most Horrible Mexican Ever!!! 5/19/2008

My wife and I decided to try Zapata by reading the good reviews here. Needless to say it was the worst Mexican food we had ever had. And we love our Mexican food. I dont consider the food here authentic, however confused is something that comes to mind. The freshness and quality of the food was way below average. The queso was supposed to be cheddar and when it came out was clearly Mozzarella based. The ground beef smelled like it was prepared more than a week ago. The tortillas that came with out entrees had a weird smell to them. Not to mention that the entrees were a confused combination of ingredients. Pros: Cant think of any. Cons: Everything more

I LOVE THIS PLACE! 4/2/2008

This is authentic wonderful Mexican food. Everything I have eaten has been delicious and though the prices are a little higher, it's worth it! Everyone I have taken there has agreed that it's amazing, even my brother the Mexican Food Snob and my Texan ""Tex-Mex is the best"" friends! Pros: Everything! Cons: That it's not closer to my house! more

interesting mexican food 3/25/2008

This place is trying to offer a gourmet type experience in mexican cuisine. We went on a Sunday and the place was not full at all. It has a pleasant interior and nice staff. The food was OK. I went for the mole, which was good but not great. The fajitas were cooked in sauce, I was expecting them grilled and dryer. They were good though. The food in general is interesting but somehow is just a bit below one expects from the descriptions on the menu. The prices are also higher than in most mexican restaurants, so of course the expectation level is raised. It is great to see that they want to offer this type of cuisine. Pros: food choices Cons: slightly higher prices more

Let Me Teach You Some Economics 2/18/2008

Restaurants are not charitable organizations. So if the prices at Zapata are the same as your local chain, then their costs are probably the same. You can either get lots of average food for a price, or less quantity of a more expensive food. So If your idea of a good meal is continuing your journey to obesity and diabetes, then stick with the free FRIED chips (CARBS) and lots of lard and cheese-laden (FAT) mexican food. There are lots of choices. Pros: Very Tasty Cons: I didn't stretch out my pants after eating there. more

Deep & Varied Menu - Delicious! 2/15/2008

Wow - what a find! Zapata is many steps above the avarage Mexican restaurant. The menu is Gourmet, Texas margarita one of the best, beautiful 'art gallery' feel to the space, couteous staff, & super clean restrooms. We look forward to going back. more

Good Prices, Does Not Equal Good Food! Salsa & Chips Might Help! 1/23/2007

I was in the Norcross area the other day, and I remember reading good reviews for Zapata. I didn't care if it was in a strip-center. or they didn't serve salsa and chips. The place was packed at lunch time, so in I went. Well, if you like frozen T.V. Mexican dinners, at the same price, Zapata is for you. Atlanta has many budget priced Mexican spots, with really great tasty, fresh food, but this is not one of them. Maybe some nice warm chips, with good salsa might help. Pros: Low Prices! Cons: Low Quality Food! more

Will never eat there again! 12/12/2006

Yesterday I ate at Zapata for lunch. The atmosphere was good and the place looked nice. However, while I was eating chips and dip, I bit into a staple - a very unpleasant experience. So I quietly let the waiter know that the mangled staple on the table came from their food. Without a word, he whisked it away. Pros: It looks nice. Cons: I got a staple baked into my lunch and no one apologized or seemed to care. more
