the perfect diner 1/23/2011

I first went to the Uptown Diner with a friend of mine on New Year's eve. We mistakenly thought the Tea Garden would be open, but the holiday hours had changed, so we needed a different place to eat. Fortunately, we headed across the street to this little joint, which was open 24 hours. Just a couple weeks later, I came back after a concert at The Beat at around 11:00 at night, and we all ordered all sorts of stuff-seasoned waffle fries, huge cinnamon rolls, french toast, and malts. The food is great. Not so gourmet or original, but tasty nonetheless. Plus, the staff is friendly and tolerant of big, noisy groups. This place has everything you'd look for in a diner, and I recommend it to everyone. more

Awsome Diner! 2/10/2010

This place is happening. I read the past reviews and noticed that they got this place confused with the Uptown Bar, which is now closed down. Also I checked with the Healt Department and there was no fd psning cases reported. Their hours are a little weird, they are only open 6am till 3pm Monday-Wednesday and then they're 24 hours Thursday-Sunday. Portions were huge and no upcharging for the seasoned waffle fries. Their menu has a real southern theme to it, blackened catfish, cajun breakfast, biscuts and gravey, a country fried steak, and a po boy sandwich. They have all the normal diner foods like omellets, pancakes, waffels, burgers and sandwiches. Had a great experience and would recomend. Pros: hours, portions, price Cons: can get busy more

terrible 11/30/2009

This restaurant sucked. They messed up my order twice. The manager is a scrub. His beard looks like it was made of pubic hair. overall bad expierence more

Best Omlet in TOWN! 9/9/2009

This is hands down the best place to go for food after the bar or club, or for Sunday Brunch. The service is very friendly, they do a great job handling the crowd and you definately get your monies worth when it comes to the portions! They allow large groups to split their tab at the registers!. I really have no complaints, every time I have frequented the diner I have been pleased. Pros: More than Genorous portions, excellent service Cons: may have a short wait more

Stomach Virus 4/19/2009

The food tastes great but my girlfriend got a really terrible case of fd psning (I guess you cant use that word in this review) from the garden omelet meal. She has the rns and violent vmting. Pros: Tasty Cons: Stomach Virus more

My favorite spot for brunch 3/26/2008

My girlfriend and I go to the Uptown Diner for Saturday or Sunday brunch a couple times a month. There is always a line of people in the entry but it always moves fast. We usually get seated within two minutes of walking in the door. They really turn the tables over quickly. The key is that they bring the food minutes after you order it--seriously, it's impressive. more

Best post bar eats on the weekend! 3/11/2008

If you need somewhere to go after the bar for a giant (seriously!) breakfast, a good burger, or just a milkshake, this is definately the place. I love the crab cake beni, the veggie tex mex, and the cajun breakfast. The carmel rolls are to DIE for, but don't expect to be able to eat one without the help of a hungry friend. While others commented on the high price of the food, I have to disagree... (have you been to Perkins lately!?) you could easily get three meals out of a breakfast, or split it (I think it's $2.00 but it seems you get even more food that way) and each have lunch the next day. Pros: Huge portions, great service, fun atmosphere. Cons: People who had *too* much to drink... more

GREAT FOOD, LARGE PORTIONS AND RACISM? 11/20/2007

GREAT FOOD, LARGE PORTIONS, GETTING MY MONIES WORTH MADE ME COME BACK! POOR SERVICE FROM THE BLONDE is what my children will remember. I was born in the sixties and I felt like I was right in the middle of it all. My first experience here was great!!!! It beckoned me to bring my family, so I did we ended up sitting in two different booths and were treated in a very discriminatory manner. I'll always remember the four bouncers at the table of six and the family of six in two booths, talk about accommodating! What happened here should not happen anywhere! Thanks for the large portions of food but when my son was told to ""eat at McDonald?s boy""; I realized Racism is definitely served here! God Bless you all. Cons: POOR SERVICE, NOT ACCOMODATING more

Nice and casual 7/18/2007

I've always gotten great service at Uptown Diner, and holy mackerel, the portions are huge. When I'm out and about, and feel like eating an enormous omelet and a huge pile of hash browns, Uptown Diner is the only place I even consider. The servers are friendly, very cool, and attentive to things like making sure my iced tea is refilled, etc. And oh, that chocolate cake... sometimes it really hits the spot. more

Great on Friday & Saturday night 3/31/2007

Uptown Diner has my favorite eggs benedict... it may not be anything out of this world but it's open 24 hours on the weekends and I'd take it over Perkins or Denny's ANY day. The Cajun breakfast is anything but bland for those making that complaint. The service may not be great when it's busy, but for the hours and location and portion size, the prices are extremely reasonable. Pros: Open 24 hours, great Eggs Benedict Cons: Parking more

Good portions, horrible tables and booths, feels unclean 3/15/2007

This place serves big portions; however, the food is bland and nothing exceptional. I do like the fact that they offer breakfast all day. The tables and chairs feel old, dirty, and unstable. Some of the servers I've had were slow and inattentive. However, this is a great place to people watch because of the different groups of people who come to eat here. I went here once on a Friday and there was a band, so that was fun. I say try this place once, but once is also enough. Pros: good portions, good on a Fri & Sat night when there's a band Cons: no parking, slow service, dirty booths and tables more

it is what it is... 8/16/2006

Much like Figlios, I think the updown diner has become one of those places that no one really raves about, and yet everyone will find themselves in at some point. It's clunky, has horrible decore, mediocre food (although with huge portions) outrageous prices, and yet... it's open all night on weekends, and when your really need that late night (or late afternoon) eggs benedict, well, there you are. Thankfully, you can split an order of just about anything (with a two dollar service charge, mind you) and still end up with two very full people. Even so, it can add up to a pricey breakfast. However, despite all that you will find yourself sitting at one of it's tables some day, some time, and really, really dang enjoying that disgusting hollandaise sauce. You can also comfort yourself by looking at your fellow diners and whispering to you companions ""do you SEE that guy over there? WHAT is she wearing? Can you BELIEVE those shoes? That HAIR?"" This will help quell the pangs of guilt after having spent 30 bucks on a single plate breakfast that you know contains your fat intake for the month. Pros: open all night, great for people watching Cons: the cost, it can get too busy, mediocre food more

Best place to people watch!!! 4/4/2006

Every weekend after the bars, we head down to the Uptown Diner. It is great place to get huge portions when you have had too much fun on the town. It helps the cause. The servers are fun, and the food is great. The weekends seem to be at a fast pace. During the weekdays it is much slower and it is a great place to grab a cup of coffee and read a paper. The thing I like the most is that it has parking. It seems hard to find a place to park in Uptown these days. Pros: Parking, Huge Portions, Friendly Servers Cons: Busy on weekends, Huge Portions more

Disrespectful Business Practice 2/19/2006

Flavorless meal and poor service make this joint a ""zero"" in the restaurant world. Uptown Diner is not the place to go if you wish to have conversation over a meal. After being seated and served a below-average meal, our server told us her manager pressures her to turn tables and asked us to leave. We weren't even there an hour! Shocked by this request, I asked the manager if this was his business practice...to my surprise, he admitted this is the direction he gives servers. This is not only bad business, but also disrespectful to paying customers. Cross this place off your list! Pros: None! Cons: dispectful services, flavorless meal, rude!! more

Still the best breakfast 6/23/2005

We've been going regularly over the many changes in location, and find them to be just as good as always. The food is great, the portions are huge, and the service is as laconic as always. It's a nice remake of the space to be more compatible with the uptown environment also. And it's nice to have convenient parking. Too bad the lines are still out the door. Pros: best breakfast more

They never should have moved 3/12/2005

Just to get parking spots they sacrificed their good name. The prices went up, the portions went down, the service went away. We kept hoping we were going in on a bad day, and kept trying again. After 4-5 times, we finally gave up and have written it off. Too bad, we used to love going there when they were in the little building on Hennepen, and even when they moved to the bigger place (now an Indian restaurant), but we just can't see any reason to return since they moved into the old Burger King. Cons: Horrible service more
