Best

I have taken many guests here when they come to visit. A warm and welcoming environment, with good home cooking. Tried many dishes, but the tried and true chicken and dumblings ...

Worst

I like the Chicken and dumplings. I think they do that particular dish well. But... The waitress took our order, delivered our main meal, and collected our payment and tip. ...

New Chef - Improving Daily 11/15/2007

Tad?s has a new chef and his influence is showing. Chef Terry Haywood is offering the best homemade soups in the area (start your meal with the Italian sausage vegetable soup?unbelievably good). The chicken and dumpling meals are better than your Mama made. The fried chicken is old fashioned delicious because Tad?s uses the best local chickens. HOMEMADE salad dressings, French fries, onion rings - prime beef from a hormone free eastern Washington ranch and US processed high quality fish. Tad?s offers an unbelievable Sandy River view and a full service bar. This moderately priced restaurant is a tradition in East County and it could very well become your new favorite restaurant. more

Chic Dump isn't worth the drive 7/5/2007

I have to say that I have been to Tad's many times. It is a favorite of an out of town guest (although I cannot for the life of me figure out why). The service is up and down. One visit it will be OK, with the wait staff doing their job fairly well. The next time it will be just awful. 1 1/2 hour wait, wrong food to the wrong person, stale veggies and bread, no refills on beverages... Pros: by the river Cons: bad food, bad service, overpriced. more

Don't take kids, accept good view for mediocre food 11/10/2006

I've been going to Tad's since 1981. It's a great destination to sit high above the Sandy River in a log cabin atmosphere. I've known what I get in return - pretty plain food. We stopped eating the stewed chicken and dumplings years ago because it's just a bland dish here. Instead, we get fried chicken with a dumpling on the side and put a lot of seasoning on the dumpling. So it's food I wouldn't cross the street for in Portland, but the setting is the draw. Pros: River setting Cons: Hostile to kids more

Not family friendly 11/9/2006

With a kids menu and highchairs my family thought this would be a fine place to try on a weeknight at 5pm (opening time). Not the case. We were repeatedly scolded by the nasty hostess for normal 1 and 3-year old noises and felt very unwelcome. Other diners and the servers were apologetic for her nastiness but it was a miserable experience and we won't be going back. Pros: Food was good but took too long Cons: Mean hostess more

Lousy Service, Lousy Food, Bad Attitude but a nice scenic view. 8/20/2006

To bad you can't bring your own food and jus enjoy the scenery. Tried their chicken liver for an appetizer and it was like eating rocks. Now I am not a fan of chicken and dumplings I figured I would give it a try. I tasted better in a rundown cheap cafe. It is like taking paste with old army tack and calling it dumplings. The relish tray was stale. The salad was nothing. Pros: The only positive is scenic view. Cons: Everything else is negative. more

its great 8/15/2006

its great for familys and has an old fell to it it has a jubebox in it wicth kids love its really cool more

A Good Place 4/24/2006

After reading the previous two reviews, I almost did not go, but it was a birthday party and went anyway. The priime rib was a little fat, but tasty and tender. Two in the party ordered oysters, which I usually do. Their oyster were hot and cooked just right. Over cooked oysters are like rubber. The bread was good, as was the potato. Going with a part of fifteen, we had to wait an hour, even though we called ahead. The view of the river was great. We found out that they charge $1.50 per person if you bring you cake, regardless of using your plates and such. My complaint is that we were not advised of this before hand. I will go back. Pros: good pan fried oyster, nice scenary Cons: the wait, the wait, the wait more

BAD, BAD, BAD!!! It just gets worse. 4/12/2006

I tried the bland tasteless paste they try to pass off as chicken 'n dumplings once. HOWEVER! Maybe it was just a bad night, so I decided to try it one more time. This time I went for the pan fried oysters - they were over-cooked (and really looked as though they'd been deep fried), the relish tray was stale featuring limp celery. The salad was limp. My friend had the chicken livers and mushroom gravy - the livers were tasteless the gravy was horrible... and the service! Forget about it! What service we got was minimal. It was as if we were an annoyance getting in the way of whatever it is the staff does. YUCK - NEVER EVER AGAIN! Items on the menu are WAY overpriced for they way they're ruined what may have been perfectly good food. A really nasty place, great view of the river though. Pros: Great river view, Beautiful drive out Cons: Worst food ever, Way over-priced, Lousy service more

Meh...Average 1/19/2006

Went with a couple friends in September - ordered chicken and dumplings to compare to Mother's Bistro - the chicken was tough, the gravy didn't have much flavor (portion was big, I had tons of leftovers, although I should have just tossed it), and the utensils/dishes weren't that clean. We went around 6 - while it was light out, I was being blinded by the sun, but when the sun went down, no lights came on so we found ourselves basically sitting in the dark with one small candle lit on the table. We were there for a few hours, and after the waitress brought us our food, I don't recall her ever coming back to check on us until she brought the bill, like she was trying to tell us she wanted us to leave. Mediocre. Pros: Nice in summer, potential Cons: far away, food's average, service forgettable more

Excellent spot and tasty fried chicken 7/16/2005

If you're staying in Troutdale, this is definitely the place to eat. When we checked into our hotel we ask the young desk clerk to recommend something better than the truck stop cafes and fast food along the frontage road. We were real pleased with Tad's Chick Dump. I guess we missed the summer crowds, since it was a Sunday evening. That may be the trick. Our meal was unhurried and tasty. The view of the Sandy River was gorgeous. We will definitely stop here again, if we're in the area. Pros: food, view, service Cons: off the main road, not cheap more

stepping back in time 3/5/2005

we don't go every weekend, recommend the call ahead seating place is packed. great veiw great family resturant. visit web site for menu. Pros: veiw, staff, variety more

Memories Vs. Reality 9/14/2003

Tad's is not what it used to be! It has become a cattlecall and the food is marginal at best. The service is hustled, seating packed and very dark. The host was very rude and unaccomidating, as evidently they've got the business and don't care about customer service. After 20+ years of going, I will never return! Pros: Vintage Look, Sandy River Cons: Service, Parking, Extremely Crowded more

Dumplin's 7/25/2003

I disagree with a review, that said the Dumplin's were doughy. My experience was the opposite. I found the Dumplin's, perfect. My favorite menu item is, ""Sauteed Chicken Livers in Mushroom Gravy"", with a Dumplin. Awesome combination. The atmosphere, is great, looking down onto the Sandy River. Easy to get to, from Portland, just take I-84, East, to exit 18, and go south 1 mile, along the Sandy River. Most parking is accross the street, from the restaurant. Be careful, when crossing the street, as people drive past there, too fast, too often. Not much parking, directly in front of the restaurant. I forgot to mention, the restaurant is on two levels. I think there is a lounge area, and more eating areas, downstairs. Pros: Great food, Knotty Pine interior, View Cons: Parking, Only open for Dinner more

2 for food, 7 for ambience 6/13/2003

The chicken & dumplings were so bad that we asked them to take them away. The gravy tasted like that cheap yellow stuff from Heinz. The salad was dry with low quality ingredients. Hey, but a nice view. If you're going to advertise a particular dish in the title of your business name at least make it decent. Go to Manzana for above average chicken 'n dumplings. Pros: view Cons: food more

I Heart the Chick Dump! 4/25/2003

Don't go to Tad's for the food, go for the whole experience. Yes, the food is marginal, but the drinks are good, the service friendly, and view great. I go to Tad's in the summer and for special occasions - it makes a great first date venue. Order something other than the chicken'n'dumplings and you'll be happier. Pros: Ambience, Service, Drinks Cons: Food Quality, Parking more

what a dump 2/11/2003

Went there with Wife and kids. Had positively the worst meal ever. It was so bad we will all laugh about it for the rest of our days. The dumplings tasted like bisquick floating in campbells cream of chicken soup. Lots of overboiled chicken stirred around. Oh, and lets not forget the grey canned green beans. Nice location and nice staff though. more

3 strikes and ... 1/21/2003

dined at tad's several times over the years with friends and family, because of their reputation. i/we have never been impressed with any aspect of the dining experience. i will not try again. sounds like lots of folks like tad's, so you might too. go figure! Pros: location Cons: food, service, too busy more

A treasure 1/2/2003

This place appears to be a run-down bar from the road which parallels the Sandy River, but it's looks actually compliments the restaurant and the lounge's character, imo. Inside, the atmosphere is cozy and warm, with a nice view of the river during the sunlight hours. The infamous dumpling is definitely worth trying. Other seafoods are fresh in nicely portioned. Service is always friendly and quick. Pros: ambience, service Cons: crowd during busy hou more

Lobster and Dumplins! 11/20/2002

Where else could you get a very nicely prepared lobster tail with a dumpling? Always top-notch service and the food is terrific. The building is beautiful to admire, as well. more

over rated 11/11/2002

Tad's seating is too close together to accomodate the nostalgic crowd. The food is average to slightly above average. The service is barely adequate at best. The chicken and dumplings lack a good down home flavor. I have gone only with out of town family that remember Tad's in it's hay day. more
