Sometimes it takes a little while to get seated, but I just order an Asahi and relax. This place always has consistently great fish and a pleasant environment. I have yet to meet anyone who is disappointed. Pros: Always good Cons: sometimes you have to wait a little while for a seat more

i'm a frequent sushi eater. and i am disappointed with this place. it is ALL about the decor and the sauces here. good fishes are supposed to be enjoyed with just some wasabi, soy sauce, salt and lemon. not drowned in some thick mayo sauce over the fried shrimp thing or the burnt fried onion on the albacore! just too much. at least they could've got the tuna right but NO!! the tuna sushi was too thready with that tough white thingys. a restaurant just blown out of proportion. the chain is getting way too huge they are missing all the details. Pros: fancy place with some variety Cons: too much sauce etc more

Me and the gf took a trip there a few weeks back. It was MAD cold that day and I hadn't had sushi for a minute. There was plenty of parking in the back; ill. Get in, tyte, first thing i notice is how nice they were. They had it poppin. Very nice wait staff/management the whole nite. We hit-up the sushi bar like we knew we would and got us seated right quick. Like I said, twas no joke cold outside so we copped a Sake and 2 teas. 2 Teas son. Bam, my mouth was brimmin wif hotness in seconds; ill. ---------------------------- Off to ordering sushi, nice menu, some unique fish that i have never seen in sushi mode. I ain't no roll guy; strait up fish on the rice. We ate as they came. The taste was poppin like roe in my mouf! I even got the quail egg cause I was feellin mad festive. The quail egg was served wif a lil sum sum (roe); a nice lil bunny out the hat. I was as happy as a 10 year old boy at an aquarium, knowing one day "ima eat that fish". ---------------------------- I got the mention the service again, cause they were on point. They even hooked it up wif some Mochi ice cream at the end; ill. $60 wifout our sake and teas. Strait tippin.... ---------------------------- Hey, just go. Pros: Pricing, Food and ill Service Cons: None more

Not the lowset calories sushi but maybe the yummiest... 11/25/2007

Does anyone need another review of Katsuya? Probably not, but I?ll give more credence to the popular sentiment. Its really great. We go to the original location on Ventura blvd, and normally if we show up before 8pm we can get a sit at the bar. We of course have our favorites from among the most inventive sushi dishes I?ve seen anywhere ? the spicy tune on crispy rice, the baked crab rolls, the rock shrimp ? but every time there seem to be more new things going past us on their way to other people?s tables. The best way is to keep your eyes open and ask the waiter passing by ?what?s this?? and try for yourself. You can?t go wrong. There is a big catch though? any illusion that sushi is good for you will go out the window. A meal at Katsuya feasting on their famous dishes will likely pack more calories and do more to clog your arteries than you?d like to admit? but hey its sushi so it must be good? more

Incredible Omakase Experience 10/29/2007

I came here Saturday night for dinner with my girlfriend. We were told the wait for the sushi bar would be 20 minutes but it turned out to be closer to 10. We ordered the Chef's Choice Omakase Dinner which no longer comes with an aperitif, consists of 8 courses rather than 7 including dessert and costs $53.00. It turned out to be an incredible value: we were served 8 remarkable dishes including sushi, sashimi, foie gras, miso soup with fried shrimp head, crab claws, Japanese Ceviche and green tea Tiramisu. The dishes are not minuscule as some might have indicated previously; they are the perfect size and the entire dinner leaves you stuffed but in the best way possible (this doesn't apply to people who's appetites can only be satisfied by trips to Claim Jumper and Applebee's). The wait staff was nearly flawless with their service and the chef was charming, welcoming and a true artist working his craft. I wholeheartedly recommend Katsu-ya! Pros: Service, Food, Ample Parking more

The best sushi place in town! 7/30/2007

After hearing a lot of good things about Katsu-ya, my husband and I finally decided to give it a try. We had high expectations on the place and we did NOT end up being dissapointed. It is definitely the best sushi my husband and I have had. However, we mostly had rolls which were amazing. We only ordered from the Specials and I think that is what everyone shoud go for. The Baked Crab Hand Rolls are amazing and a must if you go there. Yes, the rolls are small but I like that because you don't get full and can try other food. The only bad thing I can think of is the wait. Although you must make reservations in advanced (especially if it's over the weekend), you still need to wait about 30 minuets for a table. However, the wait is worth it. I strongly recommend this place. It is definitely the best sushi place in town and I can not wait to go back!!!!!! Pros: food, service Cons: the wait more

great sushi 7/9/2007

I love this place, i come here a lot! it has excellent specials and really original dishes and very fresh fish, the best part of this katsuya is that the prices are really reasonable. The one bad bad thing is that its so loud and crowded in there, its impossible to get a table and its hard to hear the person in front of you, but for good sushi and a good price go to the one in Encino. The Katsuya in studio city is more expensive than the one in Encino, and I heard that the one in Brentwood is very high priced. Great sushi, not so great ambiance! Pros: fresh fish, great specials Cons: loud and crowded more

Seems like they are rationing their fish! small portions and not the best taste! 5/18/2007

Surprised by the quality and cut of the sushi. Very thin cuts of sushi. The rolls were also very small and wimpy. I don't remember the studio city restaurant being that bad..unfortunately, this one is. One thing that was nice though is that they had a kids menu and my 18 month old loved his chicken teriyaki boat (which comes with chicken, tempura, rice and miso soup..and a lollipop). It was a great price too. $5.80 for the kids meal...equivalent to the price of 2 tiny slices of tuna on a bed of rice (all I tasted was rice). Don't think I would come back again.. Maybe it was just cuz' it was a busy night and they needed to skimp on the fish. I left very unsatisfied and hungry ($90 later). Pros: fast service..almost rushing you out. The only sushi restaurant I know with a kid's menu. Cons: small portions of fish and very mediocre quality. more

Is the Studio City Location Better 12/18/2006

I was in training right across the street, and when I saw that it was Katsuya, I was excited at finally being able to try it out (since i don't venture into the valley really). I guess my expectations were set high, due to the many praises i hear about katsuya. went in during a tuesday lunch, and was seated at the sushi bar immediately. i got the sushi lunch special, which at $9.50 was a great bargain. It included miso, shrimp & veg tempura + 5 or 6 assorted nigiri sushi. because i was expecting really good sushi, i ordered additional uni & ikura sushi - i wish i didn't. it's not that it's bad, but it was far from what i expected. the fish/seafood wasn't fresh (1 of them was even a bit rubbery). bland taste - not what i thought it would be. service was good, and fast, but i wouldn't come back for the food. Pros: sushi not that fresh, bland taste Cons: fast service, cheap lunch sets more

Amazing Japanese food if you can put up with the bad service 11/27/2006

I was introduced to Katsu-ya by a friend of mine who at that time managed the building. We were waited on very promptly and ate only sushi that evening, but since then I've discovered this is a great restaurant for Japanese cuisine in general. The fish dishes, both raw and cooked, are excellent. Dessert is a must-have. They serve a flourless chocolate cake and a green tea tiramasu - just typing this review makes my mouth water. The reason why I rate this restaurant so low is because of the service. Katsu-ya is usually crowded for dinner, and not only will you wait before sitting down, but you will most likely continue to wait eons for a menu, for refills, etc. But I continue to go there. So if you are willing to put up with the apathetic waitstaff, try Katsu-ya out. Food-wise you will not be disappointed. Pros: Tasty cooked food and sushi Cons: Slow service, crowded more

reasonable for lunch but long wait 9/5/2006

just went there for lunch and the place was packed (we waited 15 minutes to get seated). They've got a good lunch menu at reasonable prices. Most of the lunch specials come with a salad and miso soup. The lunch box comes with black cod, tempura, sushi and is a pretty good deal for $10. I'd probably go there again but when the lunch rush is over. Pros: good food for reasonable prices (at lunch at least) Cons: lunch rush; parking more
