Best

I like great Japanese food, and this is the place to go for sushi!

Worst

I do not agree with the good reviews here. We went there based on very good reviews here and on some other sites. We ordered 10 Nigiris each (combo), and one time 6 nigiries and 8...

Good but pricey for a little place 6/3/2005

The food is good and the fish is fresh. There are better sushi spots in SF with better ambiances. However the staff is friendly and the wait is non-existent. Their special rolls are very tasty but again, not as creative as other locations. Good meal at an alright price. Pros: Friendly wait staff, No watiing time, Fresh fish Cons: Parking, Price more

SIMPLY THE BEST SUSHI IN NORTHERN CAL 5/31/2005

I spent some time in Southern California where the owner of Sushi Bistro was a Sushi Chef at my favorite sushi spot. I missed his "works of art" so much, until now, at last he has brought his talent to San Francisco. more

I surveyed the waters...SB reeled me in. 5/29/2005

I can remember the day Ebisu ruled the city. Over the last 15 years, I'd try other places but end up back there. This time, sadly, I have left my old favorite for good and settled into SB to satisfy my 3 times-a-week sushi habit. Unlike some other places in sf that focus on "atmosphere", quantity, or "creativity", the chef at SB turn obscenely fresh, translucent piles of fish into functional (and very edible) masterpieces. So many places lack this aesthetic. The flavors in the special rolls are well-balanced and the sashimi is outstanding. I don't profess I know everything about sushi and know people can always find something to complain about. But I'm very picky and have found nothing to complain about at Sushi Bistro. I don't think you'll find a fresher plate in the city. Pros: Obscenely Fresh, BeautifulPresentation, Balanced Flavors Cons: None, None, None more

I was ok but I would not recommend it. 5/28/2005

We had a party of three and arrived around 7:45PM on a Saturday. We were seated very quickly but it took a while to see the menu. The table was a bit sticky and we have to wipe down where we were sitting with our napkins. Atmosphere is a bit dark, could use a little more lighting. Pros: Food was good Cons: Parking, Service, Waiting for the food more

Best Salmon in Town 5/26/2005

Please note- I only eat salmon- Be it a roll, sushi, or hand roll, thats all Ill eat. This guy knows his fish. Ive searched for better fish, and Im just not finding it. I dont know how he gets it so fresh. I hate fishing and Im glad that I have a place to go where I can get my fish like it was just pulled it out of the ocean. Pros: fresh fish, nice chef, close bus stop Cons: not freee, no puffer fish, only in san francisco more

Updated Review 5/22/2005

I wrote about Sushi Bistro over a year ago, so I thought it'd be good to update it. Since then Sushi Bistro has gone on to win Best of Citysearch and best of Yahoo for Sushi in San Francisco, so I guess the cat's out of the bag, it's been hard to get a seat at Xin's place ever since. We live a few blocks away and always enjoy going when we crave the freshest fish, tastiest rolls, and a good atmosphere. Xin's fish tastes so much better than any of the places near by. We've tried almost all the sushi places in the Inner Richmond and beyond and can't find tastes or freshness even close. Other places are cheap and have have good deals on combos (teriyaki/california roll et...) but for nigiri or fusion rolls you can't be Sushi Bistro. Xin mixes flavors in ways that you won't find anywhere else, i.e. yellowtail and basil, or cajun and softshell crab?!?!? Amazing tastes that you'll find yourself craving as soon as you get hungry again. My wife and I were in Paris last summer enjoying France's best food, but the first thing we craved when we landed on US soil was Sushi Bistro! Once you try it, you will find yourself wanting to go back the next day. Due to it's popularity my recommendation is to go on a weeknight, early or late to avoid the crowds. If it's your first time, sit at the bar and ask Xin for some recommendations or say "surprise me," and enjoy! My Personal favorites: African Spider, Watermellon Man, Just Married, Spanish Mackerel (Aji) or Hamachi Nigiri. Pros: One-of-a-kind-rolls, Amazingly Fresh Fish, Good Converstation Cons: My Small Stomach, parking, crowded on weekends more

Very unique sushi presentations 5/20/2005

Went here after reading other citysearch reviews. I agree with everyone else. This place serve sushi with a twist. It's a small restaurant that feels cozy and friendly. The presentation is dramatic and there are unique items I've never seem anywhere else. It's a mix of California, Japan and France. Small plates with unique ingredients presented on a canvas platter. We dined on a weeknight and had no problem getting a table. But once the restaurant filled up, the single waitress was a bit overwhelmed with serving and busing. However, we didn't feel rushed to finish and leave. Pros: Unique presentation, Romantic, Friendly Cons: Difficult parking more

Da bomb 5/19/2005

This place is really amazing. Xin is one of the most creative chefs that I have ever witnessed. Go here, and simply enjoy the great food. Believe the hype, because Sushi Bistro is simply great. Pros: cheap, tasty, great service Cons: belly is bigger, not wanting to leave, no SB in L.A. more

LOVE THIS PLACE!!! 4/27/2005

Sushi Bistro is by far the best sushi restaurant in all of SF!! I eat a lot of sushi and have been looking for the one place that has fresh fish, creative rolls, variety, friendly service, and a good value and Sushi Bistro has got it all! After having eaten there, I don't want to go anywhere else. I want to try all the different rolls on their menu and will keep going back for more. I can't rave enough about how good their sushi is and how much I LOVE this place!!! My favorite roll is the Albacore Dream. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it... Pros: Fresh Fish, Creative Rolls, Friendly Service Cons: NONE more

Sensational Sushi... 2/10/2005

...Better yet, sensational everything!! My friends and I decided to try this place after reading the reviews on CitySearch. Let me tell you, all the reviews were right. The extensive selection of rolls blends a variety of flavors that puts a new and unqiue spin on the sushi experience. But if rolls aren't your thing you can't go wrong with any of the nigiri or sashimi. The fish is so fresh it melts in your mouth! No need to use the soy or wasabi. The service is superb and the decor is comforting. I've been back many times and it feels like going to a friend's house for sushi. Even the bathroom feels homey!! Pros: Freshness, Fulfilling, Fun Cons: None more

A Richmond Gem 11/8/2004

Sparklingly fresh fish, interesting rolls, 9 different kinds of sake, and wonderfully friendly proprietors make this-- far and away-- the best sushi restaurant I've found in SF, AND it's a great value for the quality of food. (Ebisu had better run and hide!) And for the non-sushi eaters among you, the tempura is crunchy and greaseless, the teriyaki flavorful without being goopy, and the free coconut/pineapple ice cream at the end of the meal is a lovely treat. :) I'm tempted to keep the place to myself so that I could always get a table, but Xin and Debbie deserve a full house, so GET OVER THERE! Pros: fabulous food, decently priced more

Great Food and Creation! 11/2/2004

Sushi Bistro is a great place to go! You must try: HOT LOVE and MR. BROWN. This is very unique and smooth! This is now my fav sushi place to go better than nippon/episu/kitaro/and sushi on boats! Pros: food, fusion more

Yes !! Yes!! Yes!! 7/23/2004

I love Sushi Bistro!! I am a huge fan of sushi, and this is the place that keeps me coming back. Pros: Affordable, Hawaiian Island Decor, Great Service more

Bistro is the BEST...no, ONLY! 7/13/2004

... I walked past Bistro and I saw Xin walking out with a box of fish. I said, "Hey, aren't the fish supposed to come IN in boxes and go OUT in bellies?" He replied, "I don't like this one, so I'm sending it back." I had found my sushi place... Pros: The Freshest!, Unique flavors!, It's cheap=UR full ;) more

Exellent Sushi! 6/20/2004

The food is wonderful, the variety is incredible and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. SF is lucky to have them! more

An excellent sushi experience! 4/27/2004

Eating at Sushi Bistro is like being on vacation in Hawaii! This place has everything-excellent food, friendly service and a lively atmosphere! I have enjoyed lots of delicious traditional sushi favorites like the tempura, spicy tuna hand rolls, Caterpillar roll and Rainbow rolls. But it was the new items and different types of fish that really make me want to go back for more. Sushi Bistro's must tries are the Baby lobster hand rolls, Pompano and/or Kampachi sushi, Tuna Carpaccio and the awesome Waikiki roll! Best of all the Bistro's owners welcomed me like friends which made dining there a truly excellent sushi experience! Pros: Great menu variety, Very affordable, Friendly atmosphere more
