Fun bar, atmosphere is packed with energy. I was really here more for the drinks and to catch up with some friends but the food was better than expected. If you are looking for a loud party spart it's great. more

It's not a typical sushi restaurant. The (unfair) negative reviews on CitySearch seem to come from people who went expecting the usual Americanized B.S. parody of a Japanese restaurant. This is simply better than the usual Japanese ""steakhouse"". The sushi was phenomenal and the other menu items were surprisingly good. People also complain about how crowded/cramped the restaurant is. If anything, this speaks to how great the food is! Of course a small place that serves food this good is going to be packed! And as for the complaints about the rude staff, I have never come across a rude server at Sticky Rice. Amateur restaurant reviewers invariably forget the first rule of dining out: If you respect the wait staff, they will respect you, especially when they're packed. more

The food was sooo yummy. We had sushie, (the billy goats gruff, I think it was called, was out of this world), shrimp coconut w/sticky rice and some tator tots.... a very odd combination, granted, but all was very good. The one problem to me was there was smoking and having moved from CO and NY where there is no smoking in resturaunts, I do find it a bit bother some. Though they must have had a pretty good filtration system because it only bothered me at moments. Our waitress was friendly and attentive, until it got busy, then she was running around so we didn't see her quite as much as i would have liked, I have to say she WAS working, not hiding in the kitchen, maybe another server on the floor would have helped, but overall our service was good. The music was loud, but we love music and really liked the atmosphere. We have 2 small girls age 3 and 5 and the markers and coloring page, added with the music, layed back atmosphere, and yummy fun food made this a resturaunt we would recommend and go back too!!! This is not a place to go if you want Japanese food. This is a hangout for all the hipster-emo kids. It's basically a trendy bar. No very clean inside, but I guess you don't care if you are drunk. more

I've traveled the world and when i come home, one of the places i crave is sticky... The bottom 2 reviews are totally wrong, yes it gets a lil loud, but if you can't handle it your to old, and LEAVE! The staff is lovely, just don't rub them the wrong way, as in any restaurant, they might be rude but only because they have to put up with you, and you probably deserve it. I love going there, the owners are the most liked men in all of richmond, and that means alot if you've ever meet a restaurant owner! Pros: Unique staff, and food more

Sticky Rice is simply put one of, if not the worst, sushi restaurant in Richmond. The atmosphere is horrendous, it's impossible at times to get a table because of the bar patrons, the service can be vary incredibly per visit, and the music is cranked up so loud you can barely speak. more

After waiting for 30 minutes for our table, we were sat by a very nice girl. We ordered a few sakes and a Sapporo which were brought out promptly. We then ordered our dinner- miso soup, wakame seaweed salad, sushi and a chicken with green curry sauce and rice noodles. The soup came quickly as did the seaweed salad. The noodles took about 20 minutes and were certainly not what anybody familiar with green curry would expect. It was cubed chicken with mismatched, crudely chopped, bland, undercooked vegetables. The thing was it had virtually no sauce or flavor, it was completely dry- no hint of spice or coconut milk. My wife was looking forward to a noodle dish, but after the chicken and the terribly bland miso soup, she opted to try the potstickers. They were edible, mostly because the soy dipping sauce masked the flavor (or lack thereof). The sushi on the other hand came out after waiting for more than an hour, because as our server said ""we closed togogo (their take out/ delivery joint across the street) so we are making all the food over here."" It's worth mentioning that our server also went out of her way to avoid us during the seemingly interminable wait(to bad for her . . . we'd have drank a lot more sake if she'd bothered to check in). The sushi was adequate, but not worth the wait. Behind the sushi bar not a Japanese guy to be found, just Richmond hipsters/hippies. Even the sticky rice was overcooked and under seasoned. The fish was actually nice and fresh. They use True World Seafood from MD, as do I at my restaurant, which is why I decided to try Sticky Rice in the first place. Save your money for a restaurant the deserves to be busy, not one that you frequent because of it's proximity to your house. Pros: It might be close to your house. Cons: Everything else. more

It looks like this place is making a killing with the crowds they pack in-especially on nights like the Saturday I was there, but what I'm wondering is how they manage to keep people coming back when they are so rude to their customers? After noticing a problem with my tab from the night before, I went back the next day, receipt in hand, hoping to sort it out. The restaurant was not busy or chaotic at the time I returned and I was referred to talk to the bartender. When I explained to him that they had mistakenly run my tab on the wrong credit card the night before, I was immediately told that there was nothing he could do because it was Sunday and I would have to come back tomorrow. When I asked further about whether or not my card had possibly been charged for someone else's tab (since they did have my card info at the bar as well) I was curtly told to just check my bank account statement. First of all, I was really blown away by the lack of concern this employee (who by the way also said he was a manager when I asked to speak to one) had for the mistake THEY made-would it have been so hard to say I'm sorry for the mistake or I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you? Furthermore, you do not tell a customer with a valid complaint that there is NOTHING you can do; I don't care if it's Sunday, Christmas, whatever their is always SOMETHING you can do to make your paying customers feel like you care about their problem. Take my name and number, make a note of my complaint for your weekday supervisor so he/she is aware of the problem, and offer to follow up with me rather than insisting I make another trip back to you to clear up your mistake. Makes me wonder, does Sticky Rice even care about the customers that pay their salaries or are they more concerned with promoting attitude than good customer service? I certainly WILL NOT patronize them again, unless of course I loose my mind and start craving a dose of verbal abuse with my wine and sushi. more

This restaurant won't last in the fan! BEWARE this restaurant will charge your card twice and allow other people to sign it to get extra money. I had to fight to get a bogus charged removed from my card at this restaurant. BE VERY CAREFUL, they enjoy taking your money and they don't care who signs. I had my friend go down to them to resolve the issue and the manager was RUDE! There are a lot of other cooler places to go that are respectable and responsible. more

The sushi they create here is very good, but don't look for any bargains on account of the sushi chef wearing t-shirt and jeans. It's good to eat here early or in the afternoon. It gets way too cramped and smoky at night, not good when you are trying to eat expensive sushi. The service is typical of many places near vcu, very hippy bohemian, if you're into that kind of thing. If you're not, you won't dig the sarcastic tone of the pierced and tattoed girls that serve up the sushi rolls. I don't give good tips here generally because I think they could be nicer when charging me full market price for sushi in a casual atmosphere. I found the sushi to be surprisingly tasty and the low price is a bonus. Definitely more of a bar scene, and if you don't mind your sushi chefs not being Japanese, it's great. The quality of the fish is very good, and their best feature, food-wise, is the creativity with their rolls. This is not the place to go if you are looking for the authentic traditional Japanese experience, but great if you don't mind the loud music and kitschy decor. Pros: inexpensive, creative food more

I understand that it is also a bar and folks were hanging out and drinkin having a good time but possibly maybe the music could be turned down until dinner is done being served. Who knows. I highly recommend this place if you want to make a small evening out of it. The service is its biggest downfall as I can never get a drink and be prepared to order on the first go round. Silverware already placed could be good for business as well. But if you love sushi, you won't stay dissapointed! I keep coming back because the food is to die for! I have only been once to date, but plan to return! I think the sushi was phenominal, and we tried just about everything on the sushi menu - o.k. maybe half, but 2 can only eat so much... The service was good and I liked the atmosphere (a little cold, though). I believe the decor, the menu and the employees showed the ecclecticism and fun we all have come to expect from fan restaraunts. We also enjoyed bellying up to the bar for an after dinner drink/smoke, bartender was perfect for the place. We live close to Sitcky Rice and find ourselves walking there regularly. The sushi is always fresh and delicious. Their sushi menu has creative rolls and selections that are fun to try. The rolls are average in size, but the price is completely reasonable. The service varies, and sometimes you can wait awhile, but it is a BAR, not a ""West End"" sit down restaurant. The new decor is awesome and the atmosphere is great (relaxed, cool, fun, good music, lots of cool tattoos and piercings to admire). The beer selection is decent and there's plenty of ""cooked"" food for those afraid of the raw stuff. There's even an Atari and selection of games at the bar! How cool is that?!
