Estimate was double a competitors? 8/4/2010

We called Stan's to fix an A/C unit that they had installed in our new house. The unit was now out of warranty. The compressor needed to be replaced, and they quoted me a price that seemed too high. The technician assured me that I wouldn't be able to get it done for less. I decided to get a 2nd opinion and absorb the price it cost for the service call from Stan's. A competitor came out and quoted me a price that was less than half the price that Stan's quoted me, and installed a larger compressor. They said that the original unit that Stan's installed, was too small for the house. more

Horrible Service, High Prices, and no Help 7/24/2010

Our a/c stopped working on Thursday night. We called first thing Friday morning and were told that the schedule was full. The only appointment left was after 5pm. My toddler and I spent all day trying to stay out of the house because it was 87 degrees inside. The technician finally arrived at 7:30 p.m. He said would call beforehand, but he did not. He later said he had the wrong number. Then he said he was told he did not need to call first. He told us our circuit board was fried and there was nothing he could do about it. It was Friday after 5pm, and there were no parts places open. He said we were out of luck until Monday, and that we might need to get a new air conditioner altogether. We spent a miserable night with fans blowing thinking this is how it would have to be until Monday. It was going to be a long weekend! I called another company Saturday morning. They came within two hours of my call. They agreed that the circuit board was fried, but they found a way around the problem so that we could have air while the right part was ordered. The price for the part from the second company was $40 cheaper, plus they waived the service charge because we were buying a part from them. They were friendly, and the technician told us that he would never leave us without air. It's July in Texas! And we have a toddler! So, do NOT use Stan's. They are overpriced and not helpful. Go with Christian Brothers instead. They offer better prices, faster service, and the real solution to your problem. Pros: They came out the same day we called. Cons: They left us over the weekend without a/c. more

Great service for me 5/9/2009

Another AC company tried to rip me off for $2200. The other companies service tech spend 3 hours trying to find a leak in the system and said he couldn't find it. But, in the same breath he said my coil is rusted out and needed to be replaced on my 2 year old Carrier 3 ton unit. He also said that I needed to pay him $450 to find the ""leak"" with dyes and other methods. Obviously, if the coil is ""rusted out"" then that's where the leak likely is, so that effort would be a waste of money, the coil just needs to be replaced. I also proceeded to explain my background in construction and asked why I would want him to put dyes in my system that are notorious for causing compressors to gum up and fail. Oh, I get it, to create more business for you later maybe? It gets better. They charged me $70 for the service call. He also quoted me that the coil on a 2 year old unit was going to cost me $1700!!!! I said thanks but no thanks and I'm going to get a second opinion. He proceeds to tell me that I should use them because no one else can do it right. I told him no again. Here's where it gets good. I call Stan's knowing that they are a reputable group in town and they come out and verify that the unit is rusted, but that the ENTIRE thing is still under warranty through Carrier because this particular coil has been failing constantly in alot of their units. Meanwhile, he checks my other unit for problems and finds that the second coil is bad too. So, I could have ended up paying $4000 to the other company if I hadn't called Stans. So, long story short Air Rescue tried to rip me off for $2200 and took my $70 that shouldn't have been charged because Carrier covers that. Stans is now fixing my unit free of charge to me. John is the service tech and he's a good honest, hard working tech that knows his stuff. Pros: Honest and good techs Cons: Took a while to get them here... more

Poor Service 8/30/2008

The litmus test for any contractor is how they treat a customer when they assume the customer has no construction knowledge. Well, we do. Check out what happened.\r \r Stan's tried to cut corners but we flagged it. Stan's also failed to install an expansion valve on the evaporator. We flagged that too. Donny promised to provide one. That was two months ago. Despite repeated calls, we still don't have one. Donny won't even return our calls at this point.\r \r Do we recommend Stan's? Not at all. Cons: Mediocre quality, Failure to follow through more
