Sammy's Shrimp Box

We had a wonderful experience at Sammy?s on City Island last weekend. From the moment we entered the restaurant, the staff was friendly, pleasant and professional. It seemed like they really enjoyed working there. The General Manager, Steve Gilmore, even came to our table to see how things were. The crab cakes, oysters and grilled shrimp were excellent. Both the bartender and waiter were very knowledgeable about the wines, which we found reasonably priced. The service was excellent. There was the perfect gap of time between the completion of the appetizers and the arrival of the entrees. Our water glasses were never empty and we never had to pour our own wine (the waiter was very attentive). Overall it was an excellent experience. Pros: food, staff and decor Cons: zero more

Im not sure what the people below are describing, but my visits are always awesome. The staff is friendly and always prompt. And I asked if the place changed hands and guess what , Sammy himself came marching out of the kitchen in his chef whites and confirmed that in fact the place has not changed hands and that in fact he was in the process of opening a 3rd Sammys very soon. jan: i frequent the fishbox and i didnt hear a thing about the place being bought by new owners but my god sister went to shrimp box for valentine day too and told me the same thing as your saying. she always goes to shrimp box but she said it was defintely new owners on valentines day and the quality and service was not as good. i think she may have even left without tipping. maybe its because it was busy and a holiday, most places are not top notch on holidays. i think the same person owned both sammys before so im really not to sure about the fishbox. ill give you my email address if you want i can give you my favorite seafood restaurants in the city, if you live nearby. im a big seafood fan.your girl will love them more

WENT TO SAMMYS SHRIMP BOX FOR VALENTINES DAY BECAUSE I KNOW THE FISH BOX IS ALWAYS BUSY ON HOLIDAYS. TOOK MY GIRL THERE AND WAS COMPLETELY DISAPOINTED. THE WAITING AREA WAS OUT OF CONTROL, IT WAS DIRTY AND HORRIBLE SERVICE. TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE WHILE WE WERE WAITING MYSELF AS WELL AS OTHER FELLOW CUSTOMERS REALIZED THAT IT IS UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP. My friends and I went to Sammy?s for the first time last Tuesday. The menu was fantastic it provided us with a fantastic variety of foods and flavors. It was hard to choose from the menu since everything looked so fantastic. The grilled tuna was delicious, and the seafood combination plate was the best I ever had, really everything we had was amazing! The mile high 24-carrot cake is a must try. We really enjoyed the ambiance and overall vibe of the place. Service and staff was great as well. I am officially addicted and will be back VERY soon!! Try it I know you will be too. I've also been greatly impressed with the seafood at Sammy?s Fishbox on City Island, which has been excellent every time I've been there. Other seafood restaurants in the area are okay but honestly they just don?t compare. I hold Sammy?s to a very high standard and they have never disappointed me, whenever I recommend them, I only get a big thank you from those I recommended. I've never felt compelled to write a restaurant review online until today. Yesterday was me and my boyfriend's 3-year anniversary, and we were looking for a place to go to that neither of us had ever been. Him being born and raised in NY, it wasn't that easy, until we thought we shoud head to city island, where neither of us had ever set foot. I love baked clams , to me its a mark of a good chef. There either great or terrible with no in between as far as I am concerned. The Baked clams at Sammy's are a 10. for that matter so is the rest of the menu especially the shell fish. I love the huge selection of surf and turf dishes. Ate at Sammy?s fishbox on City Island. Excellent. Martinis were made to order, no blenders. Calamari was tender and delicious, not over cooked. Ahi Tuna and Stuffed filet of sole were also very very good. Portions were extremely generous leaving little room for the complimentary desert our waiter offered. Enjoyed the whole evening. I travel extensively for my company and dine the world over. I probably eat out 250 times a year so I think I am a pretty good judge of restaurant?s. I try to get up to Sammy's on City Island whenever I am in the big apple. I have eaten at most of manhattans so called top seafood places, but nothing matches the food served at Sammy's. They also have a wonderful staff to go along with food and decor.. My favorite dish is the crab feast for two, I order it for myself. Its unbelievable. Great bar and deserts to. Sammy has the most amazing food! I recommend this place to everyone - once you go, you will become a regular! I love this place. I feel very much at home. The staff is friendly to a fault. They just wanted to make our visit memorable and they did. The food as usual was delicious and plentiful. I especially enjoy the friend seafood combination. My children always share a paella, , which is enough for two hardy appetites and two meals home the next day. I am so happy to have such a wonderful restaurant right in my home town of the Bronx.. more

Im from new jersey, and have not been to city island since I moved here 10 plus years ago. My wife and I were lifelong customers of Titos. Of course we were more then disapointed when we visited recently and found that titos no longer exist. So instead of driving home hungry we decided to stay and eat at what is now known as the shrimp box. i am not much of a seafood eater but to my suprise their was a latin menu! We were alitle taken back by the prices but were extremely happy by the beautiful dishes and huge portions. The price was then small compared to the dish we both had. my wife had leftovers for days. the staff was great i even recognized a few old timers from titos. it maid us feel right at home. Being a chef I could apreciate a good meal when I see one and this was top quality. I was suprised also by the upkeep of the restaurant. it was MUCH cleaner and redone beautifully compared to titos. our waitor steven was a great guy, my wife had a crush on him and the manager john came to our table to see how our meal was which is always a great of well kept restaurant. Great atmosphere. Great lighting and clean area. FOOD WAS delicious and frozen drinks were much better then titos. Although i loved titos, this is a new favorite of mine. I highly recomend the pina coladas. ALSO, try visiting sometime before the holiday is over, the place is decorated like nothing we have ever seen. they must have really spent a ton on an interior decorater, they even painted the mirrors and put up a tree. I visited my son and he brought me to City Island. This is one of his favorite places and he wanted to share his favorite City Island restaurant with me Sammy's fishbox. The Fish & Chips are by far the very best fried fish I have ever had, and I?m from Dublin. I would really recommend this restaurant. We ate here in December 2008 and it was probably best value meal we ate in a long long time. The homemade paella was perfect, the house wine good and the service was very friendly. What's more the bill came in much less than I thought it would be based upon the huge portions served whilst leaving us exceptionally well fed and enough leftover for two lunches. Had a great meal there last saturady evening it was my first time,,the food was first rate and the service was friendly especailly the hostess who came over to our table a number of times to make sure we were having a good time.
