Best

“Best burger in Detroit area” This bar has the best burger I've ever had. I have tried a few other main...

Worst

Can't go wrong on Woodward, busy and at times too busy, erratic service but enjoyable. good salads and fish and chips, hamburger in top ten Pros: location Cons: older sett...

I love hamburgers... 12/8/2006

Seriously, the best hamburgers anywhere . . . ever. Expect to wait for 15 to 20 on most days. The service isn't great, the decor is from the 70's, but the food more than makes up for it. I have family that drive in from Lansing when they want a burger, because, this place is simply that good.\r Pros: great hamburger Cons: None! its just a great hamburger more

Burnt Onions 11/8/2006

I was quite excited to see Red Coat made number one, I read this post with great interest, my dad and his best friend loved the Red Coat Tavern ... they used to fight about which one of them ""discovered"" it; but that was in the day when it wasn't quite as grungy and the cook knew exactly how to cook to order.\r \r The best was ireading from a few folks about the burnt onions .... because no one knows how to burn them like the Red Coat, in fact when I ask for them burnt anywhere near Chicago & burbs, they just can't seem to burn onions like at the Red Coat. In fact they are so good, that my daughter now asks for her onions burnt. \r \r By the way my dad was the one that first asked for the burnt onions!!!!!!! Pros: BURNT ONIONS more

Best Burgers ever! 10/24/2006

Eating at the Red Coat Tavern is something you MUST experience at least once! They have the most fantastic burgers I've ever eaten & now CRAVE when it's been a while! They have a few other MUST TRY items: onion rings (serriously - the best!), French Onion Soup, Cobb Salad, Reuban (with Slaw is how I've gotten it)! The place is small, run-down, dingy, but almost ALWAYS packed! No matter what time of the day it is, there's always a full house, so prepare to wait for a table - it's well worth it! Waitstaff is friendly, bartenders serve good (but stiff) drinks and there's a ""hussle"" about the atmosphere that gives it an authentic pub feel. Quite noisy, but a fun time. more

Good food, nice staff, poor facility 6/10/2006

I loved the food, I was very pleased with the staff, but I was very unhappy with how unfriendly the facility was for people with babies. There was no baby changing station in the bathroom, and they had nothing to hold a baby carrier. No sling, not even a wooden highchair that could be turned upside down to hold the baby carrier. All they had was a WAY too big highchair that clipped to the table. If you like great burgers and friendly staff I highly recommend this place but if you have a small child don't go here unless you want to change your poopy diapers in the car. more

Unmatched burgers and fries 5/1/2006

I'm fortunate to live a mile and a half from this little dump. Easy to mistake for a Sign-of-the-beefcarver from the outside, this place is crowded, smoky in the bar, dark, and uninviting at first glance. It also always has no less than a 30 minute wait for a table (even at really odd hours). This is for good reason - their food is delicious. Their burgers are simply the best on the planet, perfectly prepared, with pretty much any topping you like. Their fries are similarly delicious. Ditto the fish-and-chips. Frankly, I've yet to have anything less than a fully satisfying meal there. Their beer list is also very good and the tap selection is extensive. Pros: Burgers, Fries, Fish and chips Cons: Looooong waits, dark, crowded tables more

Best Burger I've ever had...period. 3/20/2006

I thought I knew what a good burger was until I went to Red Coat. The Piedmontese beef if amazing: I read that it actually has less fat than salmon (but I'll have to do more research to see if it's true). The beef was cooked just like I ordered and it came quickly. My colleague ordered the Tavern Salad. I think it had chicken and a poached pear on it, and she said it was wonderful. They also had some interesting menu items as well, but it would be hard to go there again and not have the burger. My only criticism is that it's crowded. The red lighting is a little odd, too. If you want a quiet, romantic date, Red Coat Tavern is NOT the place. It's very loud, especially over by the bar. But if you are craving a fantastic burger, it's the place to go! Pros: best burger, great value, prompt service Cons: crowded, loud, have to wait more

Horrible For Groups 3/14/2006

I would be lying if I said the burgers were not excellent, however, that is not enough to keep me coming back. Every couple months, a group of collegues and I get together for dinner, and Red Coat is most often the choice. We end up waiting anywhere from 1.5 to 2 hours for tables, because they will only seat us (group of 6-8) once 2 tables right next to each other, happen to be available at the same time. In the meantime, you end up crammed up against a wall, the bar, or strangers while waiting hours to be seated. May be fine for a party of two, but DO NOT attempt to eat here with friends. Pros: food Cons: long wait, long wait, long wait more

Easily the best burger in town 2/18/2006

This place is an institution to die for. It is another place like Carls Chophouse that is frozen in time. Get the house burger (you have a choice of regular or Piedmontese ground beef, I get the latter for the reduced fat aspect without sacrificing flavor) The options for burger toppings are vast. I opt for the burnt onions and smoked gouda cheese. This place gets very very crowded. They have a nice bar with excellent beer choices but it is also very crowded and smoky. Other choices on the menu are also well done, but you came for the burger and it should not be passed up! Pros: Best burger, Beer selection, All the food Cons: Crowded, Spotty service, Slow more

Cozy prison 12/2/2005

I used to work at Redcoat some years ago . I still have not tasted a better burger . The other food is very tasty to . I`ve been to some very expensive eating places but Redcoat still has the best tasting food . If I had one complaint servers , when I order my food a certain way thats how I want it . Onion rings thin batter extra crispy ex ex ex . Don`t just throw my order in tell the cook . When I worked there , that is something the late pete or some called him John , would not stand for ignored food orders . All in all a fantastic place for food and drink . more

Fantastic Burger! 7/7/2005

Exceptional burger! Too bad it is so far from the house! Very juicy and cooked to order (medium rare please), this burger is the best out there. The onion rings can't be beat. Pricy, as cinred43 commented, but far from overated and ordinary. It is well worth the cost. Better get their early for lunch or dinner as it fills up quickly! more

bring your charge card 6/11/2005

what an expensive, overated, and ordinary burger. and the same goes for the bar itself what they charge for a burger they should feed it to you by hand. The Redcoat Tavern is a perfect name for the place. It makes you pay a ""tax"" for the condiments. You know, 50 cents tax for an slice of onion or cheese, etc. more

good 8/24/2004

burgers are very good, quite pricy though like everything in royal oak. burger/fries/drink and tip runs about 15 per person. Pros: ambience, food more

Overpriced! 10/8/2003

Not a bad place to grab a burger and fries, if you don't mind throwing down $20 to $25 (including tip for waitress) for lunch! Also, light fixtures contain red light bulbs, bad decision! Pros: Convenient, Friendly Service, Fast Service Cons: EXPENSIVE, Dark Inside more

Awesome burger! 9/14/2003

This has been one of my favorite spots for a GREAT hamburger and the best clam chowder for almost twenty years. Nice high back booths make a great place to spend time visiting with good friends. Pros: Good food, great booths, ample parking more

luscious & tasty 1/6/2003

while not that appealing in appearance...one can NOT find a better burger........be sure to get the special sauce and the burnt onions on the burger...wow.........adds just the right zip.......also don't miss out on the onion rings......... Pros: great other choices, good parking Cons: no waiting area, slow service more

Burger that would bring the British back 12/12/2002

Red coat has a burger that brings us up at least once a week, and we often see the same crowd in the restaurant. We love the atmosphere, the food, drinks, and whole experience. It is worth the short wait for a table, and we recommend it to all of our friends.....and often take them with us! more

dream cruise stop in 11/6/2002

friendly spot very busy with good but not outstanding food more

near the top 10/18/2002

good plus burger, bad fries okay onion rings as long as you order them crispy more

an easy favorite 10/12/2002

I don't know of any other place that takes casual food so seriously. It's bar food done well, really well. Whenever I stray from my usual, the burger, I am always delighted with the quality, but I rarely do because they are so good their grip on me is almost inescapable. Additionally, it's probably the most comfortable, fun bar atmosphere around -- a very eclectic mix of people, a little loud, always busy, it's just a great place to hang out. Becomes your favorite easily. more
