Yuck 6/20/2011

ok, the place looked promising, but so was not. Very bad service. It was a hot day the cold drinks were not cold, they were also so small. When I asked for ice I was met with hostility. The prices were high, will not return, mr Poe is turning in his grave less then one star needed more

Great burger joint! 4/1/2009

This is a very good place if you're in the Charleston area and want to get away from the tourist filled spots in the downtown area. The restaurant offers a very comfortable atmosphere. The service can be spotty at times - I've been there two times so far and during the first visit (it was very busy mind you) but the service was slow to say the least. My second visit incorporated top-notch service with a friendly waitress. The food was really good - I had a burger with buffalo shrimp. I didn't quite know what to expect - a hamburger with shrimp on it - but to my surprise it was awesome! If I had to offer any criticisms they would be: 1) Perhaps a better control over some of the patrons at the bar and their use of foul language where children are present and 2) a better selection of micro-brews (sorry if I'm a beer snob, but I hail from the Northwest and it's hard to beat some of the Oregon-based micro-brews up there). All in all, a VERY good choice for a casual lunch or dinner! Pros: FRIES FRIES FRIES Cons: Rowdy bar patrons more

Neurotic Liar??? 1/19/2009

Wow! Holy Moly! Honestly dude, you have a lot of nerve calling your waitress a neurotic liar. I just so happened to be sitting at the bar when your family made a scene, in the middle of a ridiculously busy summer day, mind you. I was sitting at the corner of the bar and witnessed the drama unfold firsthand. First of all, what looked like a young teenage female, attempted to order a drink from the waitress. When the waitress asked for her ID, the girl immaturely rolled her eyes, huffed and puffed, and didn't even acknowlege the waitress. The waitress then checked the other two IDs. No sooner than when the waitess turned to walk away, did the young girl say (loud enough to be heard by the table next to them, myself, and the bartenders), ""What a b$tch."" Seriously, you need to educated that youngin on how to behave in a restaurant. If you talk to the staff like that, you get kicked out. Being with your family has nothing to do with it. Behavior like that should not be tolerated by anyone, especially a waitress just trying to do her job. Grow up. Stop blaming the poor behavior of your family member on the waitress. She seemed in perfect mental health to me. more

Worst Restaurant Experience EVER - waitress was a neurotic liar 5/30/2008

Poe's was my worst restaurant experience ever. I have never been treated so rudely by waitstaff and a manager, and don't want anyone to experience what my family and I did. I had been there once before and enjoyed the food, so decided to take my mother, brother, and sister back while we were on a family vacation. The place was crowded, we pulled up a few chairs and were told very rudely by the waitress that we had to move, which we immediately did. The same waitress then came back to take our order, and had a very hostile attitude and gloatingly asked my mother and I for our IDs (my mother is almost 60 and I 30), but we carried on. Then the most astonishing thing happened - the MANAGER came to our table and told us we had to leave - no questions asked. When we asked what the problem was, he told us that the waitress had told him that we said ""F&(* you"" to her and called her a ""B*$%*"". We were absolutely astonished at not only the false accusations of the waitress (we had had no harsh words at all - she seemed to have a hostile attitude toward us), but how the manager handled the situation - he didn't ask us, the customers if there was a problem or to hear our side, he simply came over and told us to leave. The waitress was clearly suffering from some sort of severe mental condition - what kind of person so flippantly accuses someone of such horrible behavior when they know it is not true- akin to someone who would falsely accuse someone of a crime. We were perhaps more disappointed in how the manager completely mishandled the situation - insulting and accusing a n innocent family. Although the manager finally heard our story and agreed to get us a different waitress, we ultimately left - everyone deserves basic respect, especially when patronizing a restaurant. Hopefully the owner of the restaurant will recognize a change needs to be made before any other patrons are affected as was my family. more

Best burgers in the area 5/11/2008

My mother and I dropped by for lunch at noon on a busy weekday--immediately got a table outside to enjoy the view. Great burgers and chicken sandwiches. Highly recommend the cole slaw--with bacon bits and feta cheese. Dog-friendly for outside diners--waiter will bring a dog dish of water for your pooch. Pros: Tasty food, quick service. Cons: Hold down the napkins on a windy day if you eat outside. more

Cool place 9/23/2007

Went here on a Sunday afternoon, right at noon. Place was packed! Got a seat, and studied the EAP shrine...Cool little beach place. Ordered the burger w/ cheddar, apple-smoked bacon. Husband ordered the burger w/ blue cheese. Good burgers, lots of fries. You can order your burger cooked any way you like. I ended up taking my bacon off the burger, b/c the burger itself was so flavorful, I couldn't taste the burger. Good meal, won't be driving out of my way for it. Service was average at best. They were very busy, and waitress was overwhelmed by it, I hope... more

Hands down, the best burger in Charleston, and one of the few places in South Carolina where you can have your burger cooked any way you like. Pros: burgers cooked anyway, great beer selection, outside dining more
