Extremely Disappointed 11/10/2009

I was in town visiting my parents for my mothers birthday and wanted to take her out for a great meal. Suggested by the hotel concierge service, we decided to dine at Pane Vino. We arrived at the restaurant about 10 minutes early for our reservation so when we were asked to wait I didn't think much of it. Although don't try to get a drink at the bar. The lovely girl behind the bar was so overwhelmed that I think she might have needed periodical doses of oxygen. After waiting 45 minutes for our table to be ready (we were 10 minutes early, 30 minutes past our reservation time) we were sat at a table inches from the next table. I wasn't really impressed with the cafeteria style seating. Our server expeditiously greeted us with a smile and asked us what type of water we would like and our drink order, follow by bread and oil. When she returned we gave our food order as we already knew what we wanted as we waited an extra 30 minutes to be seated. Not that bad so far. We ordered the calamari and the meat/cheese platter for appetizers. If you like mushy and oily calamari this is for you. I however do not While waiting for our entrees we could see through a window, which on the other side is the kitchen. We could see the kitchen staff stuffing food in their mouths. I'm gonna take a stab and say this is not very sanitary. Shortly there after our entrees arrive my mother got the aqua paza which was about 4oz of poached fish (which she said tasted like watered down tomatoes) with what looked like mini McDonald's home fries. My father ordered the filet steak med rare that came out mooing. My husband ordered fra diavlo which was not spicy at all but other wise was ok. I ordered the veal saltimboca. The sauce was a little runny but pretty good but I'm wondering how long the paper thin veal was cooked as it was like cutting leather with butter knife. When the server returned she asked how everything was. My father asked her if she could have them put his filet back on the grill to med rare temp and quickly remove the dish and brought it to the kitchen. After about 10 minutes our server brought the filet back out and what do you know.... med rare is obviously to difficult for their grill cook to comprehend as the steak was now well done, or maybe he was upset it was sent back. My father informed her it was still not correct but decided not to make an issue and ate some of it anyway. The rest he gave to his dog. After dinner we were offered dessert and decided to get coffee and a piece of cheesecake for my mothers birthday. We all shared it as we're not really sweet eaters. If we were not totally disappointed already to make things worse the second I signed the credit card statement the hostess with abnormally large rear end asked us to leave as they needed the table for another party. (did they do the same for us when we waited and extra 30 minute past our reservation time?) I asked her if she minded if we finished our coffee and with a smile she said sure. Unbelievable! I have never felt as unsatisfied and under appreciated, ever, in a dining experience as we did at this place. After spending $200+ we left with a bad taste in our mouths. Fool me once shame on you! Fool me twice shame on me. There will not be a second visit to Pane Vino Pros: great wine list, friendly server Cons: food, door staff, parking, wait more

All around terrible experience 12/11/2008

After reading positive reviews, I came to Pane E Vino after a show at the Dunk. It was midweek so we got seated right away, but after that everything went downhill...\r \r When the bread first came I was excited because it was extremely soft; that is until I bit in and found it was still dough. Next we ordered our wine and put in an order for the appetizer special- stuffed mozzarella and peppers in buffalo olive oil. After the waitress mistakenly poured our wine in the water glass, she returned with the wine in the wine glass, but no replacement water glass. 15 or 20 minutes went by and we still had no water. Eventually the appetizer arrived..several very wet slices of squishy mozzarella and 4 or 5 tiny peppers. The problem is we couldn't actually eat it since we still had our menus on our plates (and no water) since the waitress never took our entree order! After we finally ordered, we each had one bite of the appetizer and decided we were done. We found out when the check came that our two bites cost us $16! \r \r By the time the entrees came, we were both already in a bad mood and not expecting much. As expected, her shrimp dish was just so so with her risotto cold and my chicken piccata was so covered in lemony sauce that I could only eat one of the two pieces.\r \r All in all, we left down $90 and wishing we had gone to Cassertas and grabbed a slice of pizza instead. Pros: Vallet, Nice Atmosphere Cons: Food, Service, Price more

Terrible experiene: Rude staff and staggering waits 5/26/2008

I don't usually complain about restaurants, and I've never before written a negative restaurant review on the internet. However, my experience at Pane e Vino the other night was so bad that I can't keep quiet. We had a reservation, and showed up right on time. The hostess, who seemed nice enough but slightly overwhelmed, assured us that we would be seated promptly. After waiting half an hour, I asked for a status update. The hostess rudely replied that she would tell us when there was an opening. At the same time, the crowd at the front of the restaurant continued to grow. After about 45 minutes, I was able to speak with the manager of the restaurant. Rather than apologizing for the delay, she criticized me for my impatience. When I asked if I could get some food to tide me over during the wait, she said that the most she was willing to give was a single piece of bread. When my party and I decided to leave, we had waited for an hour and not received any food. With all of the good options on Federal Hill (or in Providence generally), there is absolutely no reason to waste money at this ineptly run restaurant. more

My new favorite Italian restaurant. 7/20/2007

Until a few days ago, I was totally unaware of Pane e Vino's existence. I'm glad I wandered in. Everything about my evening was excellent. Entering, I was pleased with the decor and ambiance. It wasn't pretentious or fake. It was cozy, romantic, and all the other good adjectives I could use. The tan color scheme makes me feel as though I'm sitting in a villa in the Italian countryside. We were seated immediately. The table dress was very good if not too formal. The floor is slippery, so it's easy to move your chair around. I liked that a lot. Service was excellent. Our water glasses were always full, and we never went more than five minutes without a check-up. Our appetizers were, across the board, very good. The sweet, lemon flavor in the mozarella en carozza was a nice touch. There were too many of us to list all the entrees we got, so I'll mention the standouts. The hanger steak was spicy and tender and went perfectly with the decent mashed potatoes. A cheese and rotini special had some flawless cheese and cream sauce in it. Their bracioli was good, but wasn't very well prepared. It was the odd man out, since everything else was perfect or near-perfect. For desserts, the lemon sorbet came in a beautifully frosted glass. The presentation was matched by deep lemon flavor. The chocolate cake was decent, but lacked power to the flavor. The molten chocolate cake was excellent. Hot and gooey, and presented beautifully, it was the star of the dessert menu. The coffee's a little weak, if you ask me, but was still a fine finish to an excellent meal. I don't bestow the fifth star since the menu isn't the most inventive one I've seen, and much of it relies on well-prepared, traditional favorites. To say something is 5-star, I feel, requires incredible inventiveness or absolute perfection. While Pane e Vino doesn't do it all, what it does do, it does wonderfully. I will certainly be going back again and again. Pros: Excellent food and service. Very good prices. Cons: A few snafus in preparation. Nothing too inventive. more

Best of the Best! 6/6/2007

We been here 4 times within the last year. Best place on the hill. The ambiance is very romantic, get a seat by the window if possible(reservaions recommended). The waitstaff is outstanding, knowledgeable about food and wine. They even let you try a sip if they have a bottle open. Menu is good but the specials win out every time. The chilean sea bass is to die for. The bread pudding is tasty but the tiramisu is some of the best. Hopefully someday we'll get around to trying some pasta & gravy. Well worth the ride! Pros: Ambiance, food, wine, dessert, service-all excellent! Cons: Parking limited more
