Editorial review from Citysearch 1/9/2013

I am really not sure why this is so expensive and highly rated not creative at all badly seasoned too salty overcooked food wine list is average Durham has food that is twice as good at half the price wait staff is very sweet but poorly trained which I blame on management because they are a very smart group...o well...they wont last much longer...with Durham.s competition unless they rethink.... more

32 oz Steak was so good and so worth the 34 dollars 9/11/2010

Best steak I've ever had run to this place walk once you're inside because the lighting SUCKS, service isn't too good either but the food is worth it, REALLY worth it Pros: Steak, quality Meats,Chefs,Location Cons: Parking, Lighting, No A/C, Service,Price,Drink selection more

Amazing Food 6/30/2010

My favorite restaurant, Simpson's Steak & Seafood closed in Raleigh and my husband and I have been trying to search for a replacement. The food at Metro 8 is spectacular-I had steak while my husband had lamb and we did the whole nine yards with dessert and wine. The only thing I was disappointed in was the atmosphere inside, but I can seem some may enjoy the look (though I really didn't like the echoing). I would highly recommend trying out Metro 8 and seeing for yourself! Pros: Great chief, Nice staff, location Cons: Parking, atmosphere more

Best Steakhouse in NC 2/17/2009

This is by far, the best steakhouse I have ever been to. The second I walked in the door, I was greeted by friendly staff members and a beautiful environment.\r The wine list is a variety of great wines from all over the world. I had the provaleta and the empanadas for starters and they were fantastic. The caeser salad was incredible. For my entree, I had the filet mignon au poivre which absolutely melted in my mouth. It was so tender and juicy. It was amazing. BY FAR...........the best steak I have ever had. My guest and I had to have the souffle, and OH MY GOD! Wonderful.\r The food, service and environment of this restaurant is amazing. I love all the little candles lining the walls. AND, this is a big thing for me, Metro 8 Steakhouse makes me appreciate the great service I had there....the staff was wonderful. Extremely informative, attentive, and kind......where do you find service like that anymore!\r I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone! Go there for dinner, for drinks or just dessert...............JUST GO THERE!!! It is SO worth it! more

Excellent food 11/3/2008

Usually when you go to a restaurant on a Monday night, few people are there and you can enjoy a quiet dinner. When we went to Metro 8 to celebrate a birthday, there were only a few other tables being used. We were sitting by ourselves for a few minutes until two people came in, who were seated right next to us. And the woman at that table could talk. By the end of the evening, I knew many things about her. I have no idea why the restaurant did that when there were plenty of other tables so each of us could have a quiet evening. That being said, this was the only complaint of the restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious. We started with the spinach dip which came to us very hot, which was nice on a cold evening. It was served with very warm tortilla chips. I got a churacco steak and fries, both of which were excellent. She got the fettucine which she loved, but I only thought it was okay when trying it. The crepe for dessert was delicious as well. Overall it was a great night and I plan on going back. Pros: Great food Cons: On a non-busy night, spread the tables out. more

Wow 9/23/2008

We had reservations for a Saturday night and it was fantastic. The service was absolutely awesome. Our server was very knowlegeable about the specials, personable, and was extrememly polite. I had the Caesar salad and it was probably the best I've ever had. For my main dish I had the filet mignon which was cooked perfectly and accurately. I also had a baked potatoe, no surprises just a decent potatoe. For desert I had cheesecake and it was super, but slightly too done. I enjoyed the atmosphere. Overall I had a great time and a fantastic dinner. Pros: Service Cons: Parking more

Go, go now! 9/23/2008

We went there for the first time last night for my boyfriend's birthday and it was fabulous. It was a Monday night and we had made reservations, but they really weren't needed. Until we were about to leave, we were the only couple at a table, although there were several people eating at the bar. \r \r They served warm bread with a cream cheese/cilantro/jalepeno spread that tasted like a jalepeno popper to me. Different and delicious. Then we split the empanadas which were were also tasty-nothing special, but very yummy all the same. We each got the Churrasco skirt steak which was absolutely delicious and served with a garlic sauce. My boyfriend ordered the baked potatoe with his-loaded with cheese, sour cream, bacon, and chives. I got the sweet potatoe fries which were delicious-I was a little hesitant to try them since I don't really like sweet potatoes, but I was glad I did. The garlic sauce served with the steak really brought out the sweetness of the sweet potatoe and it was a wonderful combination. We finished by sharing the dulce de leche crepes which were extremely rich and served with chocolate sauce and powdered sugar. \r \r Service was excellent and provided great recommendations. And our server told us that Wednesday nights they have half price bottles of wine. Altogether for two of us with two glasses of wine each, including tip our total was $100. Definitely worth it. We went to the Angus Barn last year for his birthday and there is no comparison-I would choose Metroi 8 over the Angus Barn any day of the week. Pros: Amazing food, amazing service, try the sweet potatoe fries! Cons: Parking on 9th street is never great, but it's worth the trouble more

Delightfully different 6/26/2008

My husband checked out this gem for the first time with my teenage son, who can be known for being picky, but they were both absolutely enthralled with this restaurant, then they reeled me in and I loved it too. The churrasco with the zesty oil and herb spice mixture are absolutely to die for. The salad with a homemade sesame-type dressing is arguably the best salad I have ever eaten. They have a nice varied wine list, a few yummy desserts, and a fantastic ambiance. We go there every chance we get. It's not the cheapest meal in the world, but I guarantee you'll enjoy if you are a steak lover. I must admit though, I have not even tried anything else on the menu. Why mess with perfection?\r Pros: Delicious steak, delicious salad, beautiful dining room Cons: We can't eat there more often! more

Delicious food and service 5/30/2008

Chef Frank prepared the pefect Cowboy Ribeye - juicy, tender and succulent\r Jenna's service was impeccable - she's an expert with details\r Kelly's conversation was endearing - she's an instant friend\r Cassie's a great hostess with a delightful charm - CSI Miami is now more interesting\r This team is a winning combination and we'll be back frequently.\r \r We have a new favorite place to relax and dine. If you haven't tried Metro 8 Steakhouse, you'll need to make it a priority. Durham's pride! Pros: Food, service, price, atmosphere, location more

Wheat Rolls were served w/ spicy butter..GREAT>, I was dissapointed in the Chocolate Sufflay..tasted like a molten Lava Cake, Iwould go back,..A bit Pricey\r our bill was 152.00 for 3 people Pros: choice on menu was great Cons: steaks a liitle high..but good & place is small more

Unbeatable Churrasco 4/29/2008

I've been coming to Durham on Business for over 6 months and once I found this place I never missed a week. Great staff and atmosphere. I highly recommend the Provoletta for an ap and the Churrasco and lamb for entrees. Their house Malbec goes great with any dish as well. I wish there was a place like this closer to me! more

Best Argentinian Steak in NC 4/17/2008

Maybe you can get better Churrasco in Buenos Aires. But around here if you want a great steak then look no further. This place has an amazing atmosphere, friendly staff and above all great meat. The empanadas are as good as any I've tasted, (and I've tasted many) but i definitely recommend the Churrasco. It isn't typically the tenderest of cuts but when well handled and cooked it comes out as juicy as any ribeye and with more flavour. And to finish off try the Dulce de Leche Crepes. It's not a large portion but I'd recommend splitting it. And I almost forgot the Filet Mignon with creamy peppercorn sauce. The meat was very tender with great flavour but (although not exactly a traditional Argentinian sauce) the peppercorn sauce was strong and spicy but not overly, with a strong Buerre Maniere flavour calming the power of the peppercorns. This is a great restaurant for all occasions with many secluded tables for a romantic setting but also very family friendly. I'd also recommend the Luis Bosca Malbec '04. It is a great bottle of wine for only $32 that goes well with any steak. Pros: Great food, service, decor ambience. more

One of Durham's Great Secrets 4/9/2008

This place lives up to everything you hope a great steakhouse to be, and Durham is lucky to have them here! Wait staff is friendly and knowledgeable, the owners (the chef and his wife) take the time to greet guests and get to know you. The skirt steak is perfect-- cooked just right and flavorful with authentic tasting 'chimmy churry'. The wine is exceptional, the deserts are amazing! Esp the cheese cake! The atmosphere is romantic and a great date place, or a cozy dinner with friends. Best of all the prices aren't too high for the quality of the experience. We go back again and again for every special occasion. :) Pros: Location, service, quality of food Cons: not good for rambunctious kids-- this could be a pro more

Wonderful Service, Great Food 3/31/2008

I have dined here twice and each time I was so pleased I can't wait to take someone else to share the grate food and exceptional service. The skirt steak is tender and flavorful along with the spinach Alfredo. NY strip was tender and perfectly cooked. The service is exceptional, remembered how I liked my steak and what dessert I liked. The Chocolate Souffle is small but delicious. I would recommend to anyone looking for a small elegant and tasteful dining experience. Pros: Very friendly staff Cons: Parking more

Great experience in downtown Durham 1/13/2008

After all the good reviews I decided to give this place a try. They do no advertising so all business is by word of mouth. The location on 9th street in Durham is great and very accessible with a good amount of parking nearby. We went on a Friday and were able to make reservations that day for dinner that night. The restaurant itself is beautiful and romantic and the staff was amazing. Not only was our waitress very good, but all the staff made a point to add something to our experience. \r We had Caesar salads, filet mignon for her and New York Strip for me, baked potato, spinach alfredo, and a slice of cheesecake. These were two of the best steaks we had ever had (comparing them to Sullivan's and Ruth's Chris -- although the prices were MUCH better) and the potato fell apart in your mouth, not to mention how great the salad and cheesecake were. The complimentary bread came with a jalapeno, cilantro, cream cheese spread that was outstanding as well. \r All in all, this was a great find! If you've been looking for that hidden gem in downtown Durham, this is it! Pros: Staff, Food, Restaurant itself Cons: None. more

BETTER THAN EXCEPTIONAL FROM COCKTAILS THROUGH DESSERT 12/15/2007

I CAME TO DURHAM FROM NAPA, CALIFORNIA ON WINE BUSINESS . NOT HAVING EVER BEEN TO DURHAM BEFORE I CAME ACCROSS METRO 8 ON THE WEB WHILE LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO HAVE DINNER. WHAT A FORTUNATE FIND.\r FROM THE MARTINI TO THE CEASER SALAD TO ARGENTINA STYLE STEAK TO THE CHOCOLATE SOUFFLE FOR DESSERT, 5 STARS ALL THE WAY ON EVERYTHING. PLUS THE WINE LIST WAS EXCELLANT\r I KNOW FROM NOW ON WHENEVER I COME BACK TO DURHAM I WILL DEFINITELY BE HAVING DINNER AT METRO 8. Pros: COCKTAILS, FOOD, DESSERTS, AND PEOPLE Cons: NONE THAT I SAW more

The real deal 11/23/2007

We heard about Metro 8 when it opened earlier this year but never had a chance to visit. This week we finally made there for my birthday, 5 of us in total. I was hoping for a respectable steakhouse with decent prices and our wishes came true. Elsewhere in the Triangle you are subject to either high-priced, stuffy restaurants or everyday joints a-la Outback Steakhouse. I think Metro 8 has the right formula - reasonable pricing and great food and service.\r All five of us had starters and various steaks, plus two excellent bottles of Napa Cabernet. The total bill came out to $213. Need I say more?\r PS check out the Empanadas - they're great !!! more

Best Kept Secret in Durham 10/13/2007

WONDERFUL. I had no idea that this place was so wonderful. Great Service!! Great food. My husband and I just loved it. Ihad the pork chop with the sweet potatoe fries and he had the peppercorn filet with a gigantic loaded baked potatoe. It's a Steak house with South American infuences. The empanades were fantastic. Everything was fresh and tasty. I had wine from Argetina and he had a beer from Argentina. I can't wait to tell all my friends about this place. Next time I am going to try the ribeye or maybe the lobster ravioli. I just can't wait. more
