Menil Collection

The Menil Collection is one of the places I ALWAYS take out of town guests. Everyone I have taken there has loved it! The atmosphere is great and the art is fun and funky and ethnic. It is small enough that you can get through the whole museum in a few hours, or you can just spend an hour to so there going through one of the collections. When you are finished at the museum, head over to the Rothko chapel for some meditation - it's just a short walk away! more

Visiting the Menil Collection is always a wonderful time due to the magnificent treasuries it holds and the lack of any barriers to the public. As far as the art goes, it is mainly surrealist and modern. Modrian, Picasso, Magritte, Warhol, Johns, Ernst ... but also includes Greek and Byzantine antiquities. While some of the works are odd or different, you are certain to identify some widely recognizable paintings. The fact that the Menil is rarely crowded, never noisy, and does not charge admission amplifies the experience each time you go. Knowing that you can always come back and never have to stand in line or worry about admission allows you to wander around and relax in a way that is hard to do in many other museums. I rate it perfect for this rare combination, the art is truly inspiring and there is no burden of any sort on the viewer. more

This museum contains magnificent works by Picasso, Ernst, and Warhol, among others. There is always a new exhibit accompanying the permanent collection in the main building, which is an art piece itself. The other buildings house the Rothko Chapel, pieces of a Byzantine Chapel, and the only gallery in the world devoted solely to the works of a living artist, Cy Twombly. It always pleases me to view the collection, though I could not begin to tell you how many times I have been there. It is open Wednesday - Sunday and it's free! more

The Menil Collection is a special museum that houses the rotating private collection pieces of the de Menil family. The museum also hosts visiting shows independently and sometimes in conjunction with the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. The museum campus is also the home of the Menil Bookstore, The Rothko Chapel, the Cy Twombly Gallery and the Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum. Houston is blessed to have this museum in the city. more

This museum isn't the best art museum in houston but it's a museum. It doesn't get too crowded here and admission isn't too bad. It's located near Richmond. The staff is very quiet and they are a bit strict. The menil offers lots of beautiful paintings you wont find anywhere else. Great to go on a good day. more

The museum concentrates on four different collections: Antiquity, Byzantine and Medieval, Tribal, and Twentieth Century Art. For whatever reason, the most comprehensive happens to be surrealism, so if you're interested in that, this is a great place to visit. The collection includes pieces by Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso. They rotate their exhibits, so you can visit this museum many time. Best of all, admission is free! more

The Menil Collection is a museum, free of charge, that displays the collection of the Menil Family. I took my parents there when they came to visit. My father is an artist and he really enjoyed the museum. I had never seen an original Andy Warhol before and Menil owns several. In addition, there were original Picassos. We were all impressed. more
