Makes me sick 3/21/2011

The first time I went there, the food wasn't prepared well (mushy, greasy fish), especially for the price, and I got food poisoning. I figured it was a coincidence, so I went a second time. The food was gross and I got sick again. I won't go back. more

Comment on ""worst meal I ever had 6/2/2009

This is one of my favorite restaurants. I go to the one in the Gateway. I'm sorry but when you order the cheapest item on the menu that is not listed on the fresh fish menu, its not going to be prize winning no matter where you go. Also, that pear, blue cheese walnut salad you had to pay a whole $2 extra for was never famous for fresh pears and it is topped with fried yams, not carrots. No matter how over cooked a snapper fillet may be, it will be hard, its a soft fish. Your meal was only $12 and if your complaining about the cheapest thing on the menu maybe you'd have better luck at McDonalds. Don't let this negative person stop you from going. more

Worst Meal I've Ever Had 12/12/2007

I actually ate at the Sandy location, but its a chain...so the menus are likely the same.\r I ordered a Red Snapper dish, and paid extra for the Candied Walnut, Blue Cheese, and Pear salad.\r \r The salad was horrible. They actually used CANNED soft pears, instead of the signature raw pears that this dish is famous for. There were fried carrots on top that had no taste except for oil. It is a travesty that they decided to use drippy canned pears.....\r \r My fish was so hard and overdone, it wouldnt flake or pull apart. At all. It tasted funny too, and I wondered if it was fresh.\r \r The mixed vegetables were overseasoned with a typical ""chain"" seasoning, but I wont complain about that since it definately was the ""typical"".\r \r Another travesty....the Red Potatoes, were served....plain and steamed. No Butter. No oil. No parsley. No nothing. Just steamed and put on the plate as though it were the Potato Famine in Ireland and I was lucky to get what I got.\r \r Amazingly crappy food. Chili's manages to serve better tasting dishes and they are a chain. There's no excuse for this. Final insult was that I had to pay $20.00 for it all. Cons: you have to pay for this horrible food more

Good Seafood 12/1/2007

They usually always have good seafood. I don't recommend the calamari. Sometimes the crab isn't always the best. But that has to do with the seafood distributor and not the chefs. We live in Utah, what more do you want. The fish and chips made with halibut is very good, try the crab cakes they rock. Pros: Good food Cons: Not the best crab more

Overrrrated 11/3/2006

The free bread was good but thats about it. The food is average but pricey. I agree with the earlier post that the clam chowder tasted pre-made and a lot of stuff tasted re-heated. I wont go back there. Pros: Service, atmosphere Cons: Food more

Very, very bad service 9/2/2006

We were quickly seated at our booth with menus. Then the waiting began. The waiter attended to the booth next to us and another booth in the area, but ignored us for 20 minutes. No water, no explaination of the wait, not even a hello. After 20 minutes we got up from our booth and started to leave. The waiter finally asked if she could get us something, but by then we were through with that place. We left to a place accross the sidewalk. Worst service ever. more

Best fish in Utah 6/20/2006

McGrath's Fish House has the best fish in Utah. McGrath's is the only place I consider going when I get a fish craving. I love the fish and chips; the clam chowder is stellar, and I find myself craving their fish alfredo.\r \r Great food and great service. I love this restaurant! Pros: great food; good service more

Way overrated 3/23/2005

I had heard how good the food was and I was very disappointed. The first piece of fish to come out was beyond overdone. Then, after waiting for easily 15 minutes before we saw the server again to ask for another plate, the second piece was not only equally as overdone but smelled bad. I would not go back even if it was free. Pros: Good parking Cons: Food, Service more

Average fish house in Utah 12/8/2004

The Gateway is the location. Order any FRESH special of the day; but pass on the scalops. They're very skimpy. The fresh fish plates come with a variety of heavy coated unidentifiable concoctions. They're hit-and-miss; mostly miss. Do NOT order anything fried. Tastes just like Denny's. The New england clam chowder is little more than clam flavored potato soup with flour added as a thickener. Get the fish stew instead. The marionberry deep dish pie IS the dessert. The key lime pie is good, but mostly made of whipped cream. Great location, decor, and service, and now with ordinary food. This place was much better just after it opened. Oh well! R.I.P. Pros: Location, Decor, Service Cons: , one-hour validation more

The greatest seafood in Salt Lake! 4/14/2003

The seafood is superb and as fresh as you can get in a landlocked state like Utah. This place reminds me of the places in Oregon I enjoyed. The seafood is as fresh as at Market Street since they are delivered by the same people, only it's a lot cheaper than Market Street...and I think tastier. I eat alone a lot and I am always treated like a queen at McGrath's. The people are wonderful! Pros: Fresh Seafood, Great service, Delicious Cioppino more

A Taste of the Northwest... 3/27/2003

This review is for the Sandy location: For lunch, I had the Cajun Shrimp Fettucine special for $5.99. It came with delicious sour dough bread and a large side salad that had tomato, carrots, cucumbers, and cabbage in addition to the lettuce. The fettucine was cooked just right (al dente). The sauce was a creamy and pink and not too heavy. The sauce had a nice, but not overwhelming, hint of fresh garlic and other spices. The shrimp and mushrooms were pleantiful. There was no skimping on ingredients. The portion was hearty. My server was attentive and likeable. There was no wait to be seated. McGrath's reminds me of my many visits to Seattle and the Northwest. Neat atmosphere. Pros: Vast Menu, Delicious Bread, Hearty Portions Cons: A Bit Pricey, -, - more

Great Casual Seafood Spot 3/12/2003

If your looking for a casual seafood spot then you can't go wrong with McGrath's. It's has a great location in The Gateway and the prices are pretty average too! Service is prompt and my I suggest the clam chowder....definitely the best in the city! Salt Lake needed a new casual seafood restaurant and it looks like we found it! Pros: Clam Chowder, Service, Atmosphere Cons: Sometimes A Wait more

Mmmmmm. Fish. 3/11/2003

This review is for the location at 106th South and State Street in Sandy.... I only went because I had gift certificates--otherwise it would have been too expensive. I had the New Orleans Catfish. The portion was hearty and everything (sausage, shrimp, peppers, bacon, onions, mushrooms) tasted very fresh. It was a very tasty entree--I recommend it. The sourdough bread is wonderful. The server was pleasant and attentive. The berry cobbler was a nice dessert. Not too rich and just the right size for two people to share. Pros: vast menu, sourdough bread, atmosphere Cons: high prices more

Sensational 2/2/2003

The best crab cakes I've ever tasted and the price was right. This is a wonderful place to get a great meal. Highly recommended. Great decor and fast service. Pros: Delicious food, Shopping nearby, Moderate price Cons: Parking garage more

Best restaurant in town 1/26/2003

As I have gone out to eat through the years, I have found myself not going back to majority of the places I go. When I went to McGrath's Fish House, I knew i'd be coming back more...simply to try all of the items on the menu, because I do not think you could possibly go wrong. I had the cajun Halibut with Rice Pilaf. It was absolutely FANTASTIC. If you like to have a drink, there is a full bar. There is another great drink called the Chocolate Coconut Joy, it was great! Pros: great service, great food, great prices Cons: no complaints more

Great Sounding Menu 12/21/2002

My experience at this restaurant started out pleasantly enough. The appetizers were good. But the main course, Stuffed Prawns, was too much like an appetizer itself to have been satisfying. Too small, unimpressive prawns! The wine selection was pathetic, worthy of a alcohol-resistant city, I guess. The sourdough bread was probably the best item delivered to our table. The decor was very nice too, I liked the cozy booths. Pros: Decor/ambiance Cons: Poor wine selection, Unimpressive entrees more

fresh fish house wannnabe 12/11/2002

This review is from the Sandy store on 106th. They fresh oysters on the half shell were actually partially frozen (and no too fresh!). Very disappointing after having the same type of oysters (Hood Canal) a few days earlier at the Oyster Bar. The Caesar salad was extremely oily and inedible! The fried fish (both Cod and Halibut) were >50% batter. It just seems like a bad chain restaurant. On the bright side, the strawberry lemonade was good and the ambience was nice. Pros: nice decor Cons: food more
