Europe in Seattle 3/13/2005

The level of excellence of this place as a hangout, as a bakery as a restaurant is not to be missed. For years I craved European breads and then Leslie delivered. Pros: low key setting, top qual ingredien more

service fails to rise 6/6/2004

If the service was comparable to the quality of the goods, I could recommend Macrina; unfortunately it doesn't even come close. I have been 3 times and have received poor service every time. I kept returning because their wares are very good; I kept wanting to give them another chance. But I was treated so rudely on my third visit that I don't think any amount of sweet pastries can counteract the bad taste left in my mouth. When I'm in the area again, I'll go to Le Panier instead. Pros: quality baked goods more

These folks have set the standard for artesian bread making in Seattle. Beautiful breads and very tasty pastries, cakes and other assorted goodies. more

So So Service 3/13/2003

The food can be great, but quality control isn't. If a batch it burned, they'll sell it for the same price as the good batch from the day before. Also, they let friends jump ahead of you in line on busy days. Pros: Food, Innovation, Faux-Healthy Cons: Slow, Inconsistent Quality, Rude more

Best????? 12/1/2002

I went to Macrina bakery because it was given such a good rating in terms of taste. I bought 2 items that added up to $30.00 Neither one was very good. I would not buy from there again. Its expensive and the food was nothing to go back for. The one thing I can commend them on is their service. They were friendly and helpful. Pros: Service Cons: Taste, Price, Parking more

Gotta say its good, with poor service 9/25/2002

Its a good thing Macrina's food is so extremely good, or they'd be out of business. The breakfasts are delicious and the bakery is good enough to present proudly at your own dinner table. Just make sure you plan plenty of wait time to pick up your order or to enjoy your leisurely breakfast, and expect to be treated like a number by the cashier at best. Even in the late afternoon, when there is little/no line, it takes what feels like forever for them to cash you out. On Sunday a.m., get there before 10 a.m. or expect a 1/2 hour wait in line to get your great/worth it food. Pay attention to make sure you get the right food and the right change -- it seems clear to me that the staff there often gets it wrong and send an attitude that blames you for the mistake. Pros: best bakery, really good breakfast Cons: the worst service, mistakes at check out more

Neighborhood Favorite 9/6/2002

This bakery cafe is a Belltown destination for quick stop gourmet breakfast or lunch fare to go. A little pricey, but the preparations are always fresh, delicious and hearty. Get there early to beat the lunch rush, or weekend brunch swarm. This place is popular for a reason. One major complaint is that the service is hit or miss. The coffee might start out good, but if your barrista blows, so will what ends up in your cup. Pros: wonderful food, outdoor seating Cons: spotty service, crowded on weekends more

I don't get it. 6/2/2002

I don't understand the raves this place gets. I've been there twice, and I doubt I'd go back. The coffee was fine, but the baked goods (I had a muffin the first time, and scone the second) were average by the most generous standard. And the service was quite rude. There was a mix up with my coffee order (I had ordered it, but no one told the person who was making the coffee), and when I asked for my coffee, they made nasty cracks about me while I was still standing right there and blamed the mix-up on me, saying that I hadn't placed the order. Maybe they've never heard the phrase, ""The customer is always right"" (and I actually *was* right in this case), but someone should clue them in. For breakfast, try Lux down the street. Excellent baked goods and nice people. Pros: Decent coffee Cons: Rude service, food just ok more
