Won't be going back..... 10/28/2010

First of all, I think this place is overrated. When we arrived the hostess gave us a ""cool"" welcome. She did not seem friendly or welcoming at all. Anyway - we got there at about 5:10 or so (they open at 5:00 p.m.) There were a few tables of people sitting already but most of the restaurant was open. We are fairly dressed up as it's my husband's birthday and we are celebrating. I had a greeting card in my hand, so it was obvious we were celebrating something.... So, she leads us back to the communal table on the end. We were the only ones sitting there, but we both looked at each other and my husband said ""Can we have that table by the window?"" and she said ""Well, there is a guy that eats here every night and I'm saving that for him!"" - so he asked if we could have another table for 2 on the end of an aisle. So she says ""Well, if he doesn't show up then I can move you...."" Oh brother. Really? So, after 10 minutes or so goes by - she comes over ""Well, I don't think he's going to show up - so you can move."" So, we moved and that was that. We started out with the tomato/mozzarella (buretta?) it was very good. We also each had a ""Smoke Signals"" cocktail which we both enjoyed. Our waitress was a bit bristly so I wasn't crazy about her either. My husband ordered the prime rib (which I think was the most expensive steak on the menu) and I ordered a flat iron steak, I believe. She said to me ""Would you like that medium rare?"" I said ""Uh....no."" and sort of chatted w/my husband and he thought ""medium"" would be okay - so that's what I ordered. Well, our steaks came and he thought his was more medium and mine was definitely medium rare. He said ""You should send it back and tell her it looks medium rare."" So, I flagged her down and said ""I'm sorry but I think this looks more medium rare than medium."" She promptly and sort of gruffly said ""Well, it's definitely medium but I can take care of that."". . . . and off she goes. So, now I'm thinking she's ticked and now the chefs are too. Anyway - long story short - it came back very well done. It sort of lost the whole flavor. Nothing interesting about it - it came on top of some swiss chard, I think. Nothing interesting at all. My husband said it tasted like liver to him. He was disappointed with his because it seemed very fatty. For $33, I mean, really!? For me, I just thought they were very short sighted. Our waitress was really sort of snotty about the whole thing and when we left we walked by her and she moved out of the way and didn't say anything to us . . . . nothing like ""have a nice evening"" or ""thanks for coming in"" or anything. \r \r I'm sorry but I was a waitress for years and I've got news for you....the customer is always right. Don't argue with me on whether it's medium or medium rare and then murder the steak when it comes back. We were very disappointed and won't be going back. Too spendy, too much attitude and not that great.... more

Not worth it. 9/18/2010

This restaurant is not the rave that people give it. I went with my wife, we go out every other week as a date night and pick a place throughout the PDX area. Here I had the Grilled Niman Prime Ribeye -- Blue Cheese Butter, Fried Sweet Onion Rings. This was ruined by the butter and blue cheese. These are supposed to be a compliment to a great cut, but instead a taste bud killer. Wife had Steak and Arugula Salad and that was actually a very tasty meal. I also ordered the fries, AKA salt lick, come on really?? Our server asked how are meals were at the beginning of our meal but not at the end, wonder why? My meal was edible but not fantastic, was not worth the $33. We wont return and I cannot recommend the place as a ""Must GO!"". Ruths Chris has a better tasting cut of meat. more

Grossly Overrated 6/28/2010

Oregonian raves about this dive - what you get is cool welcome, wait 'til the last member of your party arrives before you're seated? That's just their policy!\r Then the show begins - over 3 hours before you cna eat and get out. Some of the things are pretty good as in the Salads & Mussels, but pretty mediocre steaks (what the specialty is), one can do better off the supermarket shelf - tough & chewy, & the fish is no better - over cooked and ...\r A total disappointment! Pros: Good Reviews?!? Cons: Mediocre Food, Sloowww Service, & not inexpensive more

Food was amazing, service was...can you say ""soup nazi?"" 6/4/2010

I have a thing for cured meats. OK, pretty much any meats. So I have wanted to go for dinner at Laurelhurst Market for eons. Sight unseen, I convinced 3 girlfriends to meet me for dinner after work. When I arrived, one of my girlfriends was there and had been directed to the bar. I found out later this was because (the hostess said) we could not be seated until our whole party arrived. (Where am I, Apizza Scholls?) We ordered drinks at the bar, and there were only 2 other tables full in the restaurant, not sure why she refused to seat us? The bartender was kind enough but used a jigger to pour and since I like martinis I downed 3 of the worlds smallest cocktails, and our 4th gal pal still had not arrived. The restaurant was still not too busy, but we were starving, so I asked the hostess if we could be seated. She hesitantly agreed, and said we should close out our bar tab. (Yeah, I asked, it can't be transfered to the table). Then came the absolutely amazing food. Chacutarie plate had 5-6 different meats to try, grilled romaine salad with romanesco sauce was perfection, mussels and fries were top notch, as were bites from my friend's plates, the salmon and brisket. Couldn't imagine better executed food. But the service! They took away our appetizer plates and forks 3-4 times, even when we protested that they were still being used. Please, Laurelhurst Market, find a front of the house that is worthy of this excellent food!!! Pros: amazing food, nice space Cons: bartender uses a jigger, hostess plans world domination more

Best pork ever 5/21/2010

I was taken there (first visit) by my son and his wife for my birthday dinner and I couldn't have been happier. We arrived about 6:30 and were seated immediately, and the place filled up soon after. The menu was quite interesting just to read, making it hard to choose. Liver pate starter was wonderful, and my pork hock was melt-in-the-mouth tender and flavorful. The amount of the accompanying beans and rapini were just right, the emphasis was on quality, not quantity. Our waitress was attentive buy not intrusive. All in all, a fine experience. Pros: Leisurely paced courses; excellently mixed cocktails Cons: Noise level is high more

Best Brisket Ever 5/7/2010

Seriously the best brisket ever. Go. Pros: Lots Cons: Ummm more

Meh 3/14/2010

Last night my boyfriend and I went to Laurelhurst Market for the first time. I had heard great things about the place, and judging from how busy it was I was excited. Two spots at the bar miraculously became available as we entered - so I was excited to have dinner. The bartender was nice and attentive to his guests, which was great considering how busy they were. We received our appetizer (braised short-rib, mozzarella and risotto fritters). They were so incredibly salty - and horrible - that we couldn't eat them, lost our appetite (which never happens with me) and left. I will say, I didn't bring the concerns up with our bartender, so they didn't have a chance to resolve it - but it was so horrible, I wouldn't have wanted anything else. Maybe, someday, I'll give them another shot. but that won't happen for a while. Pros: good beer selection for few taps, nice bartender Cons: salt, salt and more salt more

Not worth the hype 2/21/2010

We just got home for our first meal at Laurelhurst Market and were totally disappointed. We had read the reviews — pro and con — and so were going in with eyes open and expectations moderated after the initial round of rave reviews. We arrived at 5:30 pm on a Sunday night and after an initial mix-up on our appetizer order, were served our salad and soup — the soup a Sunchoke and Crab Bisque was nice, but served luke warm (at best). Then the wait began … 10 minutes … 20 minutes .. reassurance that our order was coming just 3 minutes away … another 5-10 minutes and the finally our order. My hanger steak was served luke warm, medium rare and fine, but nothing special, and my husband's rib eye was stone cold in the center — medium — but stone cold. They tried to make up for it with a discount on the bill, but seriously .. how many other places are there in Portland where you can go to get good, no really great food, and consistent, attentive service and food that is actually hot? I’m not going back. Definitely NOT a “Best” Restaurant in town. Pros: Fresh meat Cons: Slow service, cold food more

Unorganized and rude hostess 2/15/2010

Our first visit to this restaurant was fine. Our second attempt was a complete disaster. \r \r I called the evening before Valentine's Day and was told they didn't accept reservations. I asked if we arrived at 5pm if he thought we could get a table. He said we should be fine. \r \r My husband and I got in line at 10 to 5pm. I went in and asked one hostess if there was a list or anything we needed to do. She replied that this hadn't happened before and to just wait in line. After waiting in line for ten\r minutes to enter the restaurant we were rudely turned away because we didn't have a reservation. I explained the situation to the woman (a different hostess) and she could have cared less. She didn't even pretend to care or be sorry. If we wouldn't have been told different stories, I would have happily sat at the bar. I couldn't believe how poorly this woman treated us. I have no plan to spend another penny at this restaurant. I do plan on calling and complaining to a manager though. \r \r It's really unfortunate because we live in the neighborhood. Laurelhurst Market should try not to upset it's locals and get their staff on the same page. Pros: The food Cons: Rude, a bit overpriced and unorganized staff more

Can't wait to go back.. 12/4/2009

6 of us walked over to have dinner (love that it's in our neighborhood) last month. We had a reservation and were seated promptly even tho the restaurant and bar were full and people waiting at the door. Our server was attentive and helpful, even as busy as it was. I ordered a gin and tonic and the server said they make their own tonic water - it had the perfect balance of bitter and sweet. We ordered scotch eggs, sweetbreads, roasted marrow bones for starters and practically licked the plates clean. The piedmontese hanger steak was perfectly prepared, and melted in your mouth. The smoked brisket was so full of flavor and fall-apart tender - and a huge portion! The mac and cheese was tasty, but I prefer it creamier with more sauce. I didn't taste it, but the salmon was pronounced a winner, too. I was too full for dessert, but apparently it was good, too - everyone else polished it off....\r Also, their meat counter at the entrance has a great selection of their in-house prepared sausages, pates, etc. Everything I bought out of the case soon after they opened was fabulous. Some of the best frankfurters I've ever tasted, too. Pros: delicious food and drinks, great service Cons: a long wait unless you have a reservation more

Bad service and preferential service 10/24/2009

As a self proclaimed foody I wanted to check out one of Portland's newest attractions but what a disappointment. A waiting time of one hour lasted almost two hours which allowed for ample demonstration of preferential treatment to regulars which were seated immediately, a waitress rushing away in mid sentence - a conversation with one of the owners didn't help either according to him she is his best server - over-salted side dishes, french fries arriving at the end of the dinner. Laurelhurst Market might be the happening place but you can get better service in many other of Portland's restaurant. Cons: Bad Service and preferential service more

Great Food, good service 10/2/2009

the mussels were succulant and plenty. I prefer the frites on the side, since it is ackward to have to dig through the heap of frites to get to the mussels.\r The Steak Tartar was ecellent, the taste of the meat was not overpowered by seasoning.\r We had hoped that the Steak Frites would be the bavette cut, but my partner was well satisfied with the cut du jour, top sirloin.\r Service was attentive and non intrusive.\r Maybe this was not intentional, but I really liked that the water was not ice cold but had a pleasant room temperature. Pros: well prepared tasty food Cons: not open for lunch more

Simply mouthwatering.... 6/20/2009

This is a fabulous replacement of a longtime Burnside quickymart, and is well worth checking out. You are greeted by a butcher counter worth oohing and ahhing over, and if you're nice, you will get a taste of one of their excellent pates. The menu is, of course, meat-centric, simple and mouthwatering. There are a few seafood items such as mussels, pan fried oysters, and a fish or two, but it's primarily of the hooves. Perfect veal sweetbreads left me craving more. I had the steak frites, which will vary on the night, tonight of hanger steak medium rare. It was butter, melting in the mouth good. So good as to be memorable. The fries were lovely. My mates polenta was the tastiest I've ever had, and the steak au poivre ""bites"" were delicious. I kept looking at the next table's dishes, which all looked equally excellent, especially the braised pork. Desserts are few and good, and they have a full bar, which is a bonus for many. Go here, and love it. Pros: Carnivores delight Cons: Could use a few more budget minded wines more
