My husband and I have had Indian food in different parts of the world: France, London, Cayman Islands - to name a few. Yet, my heart and my taste buds always come back to India'...

Disappointing Food 7/7/2008

My Fiance and I went there for a Saturday night dinner excited about trying out a new Indian place. Being Indian - we might be holding the place to a higher standard but, overall we found the food to be very disappointing. We decided to get two appetizer's and an entree to share. I at first ordered the papri chaat and the waiter suggested we try something else since the papri chaat was not very good that day. What? That is like saying our salad is not very good today...so I had veggie cutlets. They were oily, rubbery, and nasty. Tasted totally nuked. We ordered the malai kofta for dinner. Completely BLAND! No taste whatsoever. I felt like I was eating cream and butter with a fried fritter. Aside from total lack of spice, our food was not properly seasonsed either. Service was very good (which is not common in most Indian restaurants), the waiters were very nice and attentive, and the ambiance was fine. Considering that and since we had heard good things about the place and thought well maybe they were just having an off night. We went back (like idiots) for the buffet - and I totally agree with previous posters. The food was all bad!! There was not one thing on the menu aside from the rice and raita (what does that really say about an indian restaurant) that was worth the very expensive lunch price. Papri chaat was indeed disgusting. Generally the food was oily, stale, and worst of all bland. Save yourself some $$ and go elsewhere. Pros: Location and Service Cons: Tasteless, Stale Food more

So disappointing. Spare yourself - go elsewhere for Indian. 6/5/2008

I used to eat at India's all the time. I cook Indian dishes myself, and although India's didn't serve much that was unusual, I at least appreciated the quality of what they provided. Over the last six years, however, the food has gotten worse and worse. Smaller portions, cheaper spices used. Now I'm sorry to note they don't even bother spicing some dishes. The Tandoori chicken, for example, is dry and tasteless. It's obvious they aren't even marinating the chicken anymore - just painting it red and (over)roasting it. (Which is odd, because that's the chicken used in Chicken Tikka Masala, a perennial favorite at most restaurants. But at India's the sauce is nothing but tomato and a little butter - no fine spices whatsoever.) The Sag Paneer is just spinach, cubes, and an unspiced cream sauce. (Tastes the same as the spinach at Boston Market.) And be aware, you are expected to pay EXTRA for rice - and given the prices charged by India's, that's just robbery. Pros: Plenty of seating, good location in the Galleria. Cons: Dismal food, high prices. more

Truly the MacDonald's of Indian cuisine, but at a ridiculous price. Really, Houston, we can do better. Go elsewhere. Pros: Plenty of seating, good location in the Galleria. One of THE best Indian places in Houston! 5/21/2008

I discovered India's in the early 1990's and still love this place in 2008! I love their mint chutney - tastes great on their pappadum! While the lunch buffet is a bit on the pricey side, the food is always extremely delicious...my fave dishes are the saag paneer, the tamarind sauce (great for dipping your naan into), their peas pullao rice, kheer (rice pudding), the chicken tikka masala (not usually found on the buffet but still an awesome dish), and the tandoori chicken. The service is usually quite good, but they seem to like to make you wait to pay up. I usually give them a hint I'm ready for the check by taking out my wallet and getting my credit card ready. (Which is why they're not getting 5 stars from me LOL). But still, this is an awesome place to eat and experience excellent Indian food! Pros: Service, ambience, food Cons: Parking can fill up quickly more

Excellent food 4/21/2008

The manager himself came to wait on our table when the waitresses were busy and he was very kind and helpful. Food was excellent and not too over-priced. more

Just as good as I remembered 3/10/2008

I ate at India's tonight for the first time in almost two decades. My father used to take me there when he was completing his residency at Ben Taub. As a child, I vividly remember enjoying the rice pudding, curry, and naan. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the food was equally satisfying to my adult palette. My friend and I enjoyed both chicken and lamb curries, as well as a delicious assortment of appetizers. The service was excellent, and the entire meal took less than 45 minutes from beginning to end. I especially enjoyed the naan, which was arguably the best I've ever had. The atmosphere was tasteful but not excessively formal. There were couples as well as families with children. The prices were entirely reasonable, even if my gin & tonic was weak (typically so for a restaurant). All in all, an excellent dining experience. Pros: Excellent food, ambience, reasonable prices. Cons: Somewhat weak mixed drinks. more

Nothing special, better Indian food elsewhere 6/19/2007

I'm your normal mid-30's Houston restaurant goer; I like most types of food, not just Indian. Eat out about 4 nights each week, so have eaten at many places, including some of the better known Indian restaurants inside the Loop and Galleria areas. India's was simply OKAY, and in fact was somewhat disappointing. Service was decent, but that was about it. Biggest let down: food was cold. Ordered the Viceroy 2-person dinner; not much was memorable other than fact it was a waste of nice night out. Not saying food was terrible, but would've rather spent time and money at one of Houston's many other more worthy restaurants. My advice: trust me, this place is one big "Ehhh" (a.k.a, forgettable). Pros: Not much, guess the service was decent (but not great by any means) Cons: Cold food, not taste, a bit expensive for lack of good food more

Great naan and wonderful service 4/29/2007

This restaurant has EXCELLENT service I do not understand what the negative reviewer could possibly be talking about unless they own the other Indian restaurant they suggested. We are 'American Folks' and they do not hover over our table....however I have seen regulars there who have probably gone for years having conversations with the staff....Indians as well as American Folk. I have been several times and always impressed with the number of delicious items on the buffet, the excellent naan that they bring to your table and the never empty tea glasses. Their saag paneer is not as wonderful as the now closed Taj Majal (Gulf Freeway) but then I have never tasted anything even close to that former restaurant's creamed spinach. Pros: food and service Cons: parking lot a bit tight more

Not for Indians 2/2/2007

I had been to India's because of the reviews. But unfortunately I personally wouldn't even give 1 star. I am an Indian so I know how Indian food should taste like. I had been to buffet in Jan 06 and both veg and non veg are eatable but not delicious. Plus the price that you pay for the buffet is not worth it. The chicken tandoori was tasteless but the goat masala was good. Pros: Decor, Ambience Cons: Food more

Actually we had to get up and ask the waiters for water, roti etc. Plus they do not have refill on cold drinks for which they charge a dollar and half. So my suggestion is if you are indian then stay away from this restaurant atleast for the buffet. I bet Mayuri is much better choice then India's. Pros: Decor, Ambience Cons: Food more

As good as it gets ! 6/19/2006

Comprehensive Menu ; Food is very good quality - and price is good value for the quality. Good location ; excellent staff & service. If perchance you're from cooler English speaking European climes, and like your Indian food a little spicier than normally served for a North American palate, then ask for it as "Hot" - hits the spot every time Pros: Menu, Food, Service Cons: Parking limited but normally OK more

Fantastic vindaloo! 8/3/2005

This was my initial visit and I was very impressed. I have been to Indian restaurants in a lot of cities, and this is one of the best. The samosas were well-spiced and excellent. The mulligatawny was piping hot and not as spicy as I would have liked it. The lamb vindaloo, however, was exactly as I asked - extra hot! And boy, they weren't afaid to pour on the heat! I was sweating like crazy! That's just the way I like it, though! The portions were adequate, especially when you get rice and naan as well. And the naan was very good and had that freshly baked quality. The service was very good as well, and they kept the children in our party happy with balloons. Pros: Great food, Good service Cons: None more
