Another place suffering from its own success. 1/21/2008

My friends and I were semi-regulars at Horus before it was ""discovered."" Since then we've experienced a noticeable decline every time we go there. First the music became too loud--it's a small place where the loud music encourages loud conversation, which spirals out of control and makes any kind of communication a daunting prospect. If you like just looking at your companions, this won't be a problem. Second, we've noticed the service decline, as the servers are no longer as attentive as they used to be and some of them even have an off-putting attitude. What REALLY destroyed any kind of loyalty we used to have to the place happened this past weekend. We stopped in for a round of drinks and a hookah, two friends and I. We racked up a $40 bill in half an hour and weren't planning to stay long, so when the waiter came by to see if we wanted another round we just asked for the check. My friend got up to go to the restroom before we left, during which time an employee came up and told us we had to leave. To assuage any fears he might've had that we were campers, we let him know we were on our way out and that our friend was using the bathroom. He responds, ""No, I'm going to have to ask you guys to leave. We have a reservation."" When our friend got back we wanted just a few more rounds on the hookah (having been seated <40 minutes earlier) when he came up again and told us we had to go. I find it appalling that a business finds it acceptable to force out long-standing, paying customers in such a rude and disrespectful manner. We will NOT be going back again. Pros: One of a few hookah bars in the city Cons: LOUD, rude employees, poor service more

Best Egyptian, Moroccan Place ever 12/30/2007

If you are looking for a cute place to do parties or birthdays Horus Cafe on Avenue A is the best place ever, and even if you want just to hang out with your friends is the perfect place to visit, when you go you will love it. I?ve been there last week with my cousin, I organized her birthday party over there as a surprise for her and it was a blast, we had so much fun over there, we heard about it many times, but we never had a chance to visit it, but when we saw it, it?s a very cute place, we like the way how they design their place, they have those walls with the candles inside it, which gives the place a warm, inviting and romantic feeling, we also like the Moroccan style mirrors and decor, I even like the painting that they have in the bathroom :), plus they had for our party a middle eastern live band, and two belly dancers shows, one was a male and the other belly dancer was female they were amazing. For the servers they have very nice polite professional servers, they come all the time on our table to check if everything is alright, and if we need something. The food is very good food, it taste and look so good, they serve their grilled food in something called Tagine that had charcoals inside to keeps your food warm all the time, it?s a traditional Moroccan thing, even their plates are not regular plates, they have a Moroccan design in the plates which was very colorful and cute, it makes you want to eat from every different plate :), plus they have the best hookah's flavors, but seriously over all is a very good place, they have the best service, good prices, very good professional attitude of the servers, and a very lovely warm inviting atmosphere of the place, everything was perfect, and we had the best time ever, and we will go again and again. Keep up the good work. Pros: Place Atmosphere, Warm & Inviting, Service, Prices, Live Band, Belly Dancer, Food Cons: Nothing to think about more

The WORST place ever--should be in New Jersey! 4/28/2007

LOUD, cheesy, bad music, LOUD, bad food, rude staff, LOUD, bad decor, oh and did I say LOUD?\r \r Old, balding men with bad-looking women....yikes.\r This place doesn't look like a restaurant, but like a brothel. Tonight some old, fat man was half-naked in the patio with a dancer on his lap. He and his entourage looked like Tony Soprano, and the women looked like paid professionals.\r \r Definitely a TERRIBLE place, the worst I've seen in NY in 10 years. There is no way this place is going to last.\r Good riddance! Pros: Nothing Cons: Bad music, bad food, bad decor, bad service, bad ambiance more

WORST Dining Experience Ever in NYC 8/13/2006

I went to lunch here with 2 friends yesterday, and it was the worst food and service we have ever gotten! We were the only people in the restaurant (which should have been our obvious first sign to not even try it), but they were obviously not busy. When the waitress came to take our order she told us that there was a drink minimum. This was never posted anywhere. When I pointed it out to her, she just acted like well that's our policy, you have to order a drink. The waitress got our drink and meal order and that was it. She never came back to check on us, see if we needed anything else, etc. My friend and I both ordered the deluxe hamburger - it was supposed to have sauteed mushrooms and onions with swiss cheese. What we got was a plain burger, when we brought it to their attention, they eventually brought out Kraft cheddar cheese singles on a plate with mushrooms drained from a can for us to put on top of our hamburger, plus the bun was completely stale. It was disgusting! I will never go back again, and I will never recommend it to anyone. There are too many great NYC restaurants to waste your time here! \r Cons: food, service more

Best service, great hookah selection, great music, best special touches.... 7/24/2006

I love this kind of place...where you can go with friends ...and just be... The host, the tall Egytian {?} gentleman with the utmost regal manners attended to us on both occasions. He [as well as other staff] was superbly attentive, not to mention bringing us a plate of delectible Egyptian baklava on the house at the end of our night--what a touch. On another occasion, this same gentleman brought bottled water for our entire party [4] on the house again, when we missed our cab and asked to wait inside. Clearly, this gentleman knows good service and how to retain customer loyalty--I will be back again. \r \r Great teas, great hookah flavor selection, the most unique cozy ambiance...almost like you are in a cave of Moroccan design.\r \r The kabobs were surprisingly good...but the food shouldn't be the reason you go to Horus. \r \r Enjoy! Pros: service, tea, music Cons: nothing! more

Excellent, Excellent 7/4/2006

I went there last night with a friend and everything was perfect. The atmosphere is very chill, the music was arabic/latin, the food was delicious and the service was outstanding. I ordered the egyptian pharoah hookah which is pistachio and coconut and it was yummy!!! It is the perfect place to hang out with friends if you want to talk, smoke hookah and relax. Definitley a place to visit! Btw, its also very clean...a big plus in this city! Pros: service, ambience, clean Cons: nothing i can think of more
